The capitol of Columbia after being leveled by the Union forces, rebuilt with some streets over 65 feet wide because it was felt that a mosquito could not make that far of flight. I can assure you, they can. I love the Palmetto State and the swamps around Orangeburg but mosquitoes can make it unbearable for months on end. That's when I head to Palm Springs and cheer every lizard that eats a critter.GrizLA said:CatGrad-UMGradStu said:reinell30 said:Pretty tough to beat that heat in Arizona...sometimes it may be a little warm in summer but a good AC can take care of that easier than a heater can warm you in Montana...
I hated Fort Benning and Fort Stewart when I was on active duty. Returned to Montana for a few years after I left active duty but returned to Georgia. Parts of the state can be unbearably hot for two or three months but I much prefer that 75 to 85 degree temp range for about half the year. Plus there's so much more to see and do, especially if you're a football junkie.
The BBQ trumps the mosquitoes, though.
Damn mosquitoes on the Arctic circle came out in force for about 3-weeks. Wore a face net so we could breathe at work and play. Then the mosquitoes went away and for a week we had no bugs, then the damn Nats came. You could take them by the handful off your arms and squish them. Mosquito repellent and nets didn't stop them. They were 100 times worse then the mosquitoes.

"Southern mosquitoes are of the genteel kind. They sleep late, then hit the targets and get super active ad dusk then settle down for the most part which is why most people in Carolina do their business early in the AM before the heat and mosquitoes take over and go out later in the cool of the evening especially if it rains which it does in Orangeburg Country mor eoften than not."
Would you care to define "do their business" ??
Lived in San Juan Capistrano for 7 years; no AC. Only needed for the occasional Santa Ana. Yes, we had the damn swallows. Left because of the "social climate;" didn't want to raise my kids there. Only thing I ever missed was Doheney Beach and the Swallow's Inn. Great watering hole.CDAGRIZ said:I know you all hate the social climate, but the actual climate in coastal Southern California is tops on the planet if you ask me. I sometimes go months without AC or heat. I swear. It's been kind of cold lately, but it's honestly between 65 and 75 around the clock for much of the year. My in-laws live inland, Riverside County, and that might as well be another planet.

To answer that would take this past 17 pages.SaskGriz said:CDAGRIZ said:I know you all hate the social climate, but the actual climate in coastal Southern California is tops on the planet if you ask me. Okay I will play along. What is it about "the social climate" of California that Egrizers' would hate? As a Canadian I don't know much about the state, other than it's got more people than my country does. One of my sisters lived in Oakland for about 20 years but I have to confess I only made it down for her graduation and wedding.

I can answer it in two words. It sucks.

They do claim southern Cal has the most perfect weather. The only problem is, everyone knows it. TOO many people for me. Horrible traffic jams...the ocean for the most part is too cold to swim in without a wetsuit most of the time. Nice place to visit....

Agree 100%. If I had to commute more than 10 miles, live inland, and/or go to Disneyland on a regular basis, I would be gone very quickly. I also avoid LA County at all costs. My particular personal situation on a day-to-day basis makes it tolerable. I was only talking about the weather itself. That part is very nice.
In Carolina, they talk football and womens' basketball but in Palm Springs, the older folk complain of their STDs....cclarkblues said:GGNez said:First, I love the Phoenix area. Lived there for a couple of years in the early '90s. Not so much fun in the summer, but there are plenty of pools to jump into.
Secondly, bear with me on my ignorance here - I'm getting reacquainted with the eGriz community. Am I correct in my assessment that most posters enjoy a derailed or non-football thread but a couple of them pull the "mods, move this" card if they are not fond of the topic and/or poster? Just trying to get a handle the basic rules of etiquette.
Mods, don't move this. We're learning. Cold and loud.
Depends on the subject and if it's football season or not. And, if you didn't know that old guys talk about the weather incessantly, you have a lot to learn about life.
I lived in Calif for over 50 years and can tell you that most SoCalifornians are from other states and nations and are people who basically rejected the old ways and can recreate their life anyway they want in any way as long as it doesn't bother anyone. I believe tolerance in Calif is a way of life that many people in other states don't want or simply are envious of the climate, the creativity, the coast, the mountains, the deserts and the beautiful places in the Redwoods, the far north (which resembles western Alberta) and the diversity of peoples here. I love it when I return for two months and miss it when I go back to S. Carolina. Politically, it is split down the middle geographically but the very young and liberal live along the coast and the extreme far right that thinks the world is going to end soon in violence live in the deserts and NE near Mormon country. All in all, Calif is a unique state. I guess I am biased as I came here with absolutely nothing and at age 55 sold my business and retired when I was still able to do the things I thought were important. Now, at 73, I don't regret it and I'm grateful to the Golden State for the opportunities it gives everyone willing to forget the negatives and achieve whatever you are capable of or want. In Calif. there was no one who said 'you can't do that".SaskGriz said:CDAGRIZ said:I know you all hate the social climate, but the actual climate in coastal Southern California is tops on the planet if you ask me.
