Did I see that the long time bartender there (his name escapes me, maybe Charlie) passed recently?
Yes, unfortunately Donnie passed away; I believe due to cancer.

Donnie, that's right. That's too bad. He was good people.

well now I will, but I honestly had never heard of them. Where are they located?

Higgins and South Third. Sort of across the street from Bernice's Bakery and near the Kettlehouse. Flipper's was the first Casino in Montana supposedly. But now, it is a nice little bear bar with good food.

It’s been a while but the Flippers I’d go too was not for the faint of heart. Usually went there to meet someone for something and it was not burgers. Played a little Keno too and drank some beers while the welfare moms deposited entire welfare checks into the machines with their babies in car seats next to em. My dad worked there for a couple years in the cashiers cage where he kept a bat to “disrupt” any would-be-disrupters. Lots of good times and flippers.

Flippers and 8 Ball Billiards. Pool and cheap pitchers of beer....back in the 70s. Didn't Flippers have nickel beer night?

Mulligans, before it was a titty bar, had 10 cent beer night

Yes it was. First time there was 1987. When the best beer was cheep beer. Bitter beer face was the norm because that is all I could afford.

That's definitely the Flippers I remember.
Has it changed to an upscale Dive?
Is that a good thing?

We used to play beer/pinball with those little cups of draft. You turned your back to the game, fired the first ball into play, downed the beer and then spun around and played. It was silly and fun but then so were much of the '80's.

Well the Park's crowd had to go somewhere, and the Star Garage wasn't it.

wow the Park that is a blast from the past. I remember going in there one day in the late 70's and ran into one of my old high school buddies who was a pro fighter (turned pro at 16). He said guys you don't want to be in here. We were like why and he said just leave. we were like come on we have not seen you for a while and he said bad shit was going down and you don't want to be anywhere around, apparently he was acting as a henchman for the baditos or whatever biker gang was in missoula back then. a few weeks later he was involved in some really bad shit and went to prison for a long time. Great kid in high school.

As did Connies, where Meagher Bar is now.

wasn't it connies that had import night? i remember drinking many bombardiers, newcastles brown, and other types of 'craft' beer that was just becoming popular in the u.s. at that time.it was usually a fun night.

RIP Donnie.

This was our neighborhood hangout. I lived on 6th Street from 2000-2005 a couple blocks away, across from the old school admin building. I would go there and get a pitcher and study at one of the tables in the afternoon. Burgers were/are great, as were the cheese fries. Since it was only beer/wine, we would "sneak" in a flask at nights to go with our pitchers, but Donnie couldn't have cared less.

I remember there was a condom machine in the men's room. Someone had written on it: "For full refund, insert baby"
