Sitting here in Flipper's.

if you want the way back cool how about the Monks cave when it was the real deal in the 70's one of my classmates was a bouncer and he was like 17 years old was part of the 4b clan and he would let us in lol. I bet that place still stinks like it did back then...I remember cigarette smoke so thick you couldn't hardly tell if the girl you were asking to dance was good looking or not.....fortunately she could not tell either and some times they would actually dance lol.

As did Connies, where Meagher Bar is now.

wasn't it connies that had import night? i remember drinking many bombardiers, newcastles brown, and other types of 'craft' beer that was just becoming popular in the u.s. at that time.it was usually a fun night.

I was strictly Miller Lite in those days.

It was the Candle in the 60's. Bruce Walwork's band. Great times.

Does anyone recall a bar called the Jolly Roger in the 60's? If I recall correctly, it was an upstairs bar downtown. Best part is all you had to do to get served was impersonate a Sigma Chi. Seemed to be their hangout.

In 1962 I walked up those stairs to the alley and lo and behold Drinvills (sp) Missoula Police car was parked and running. Next thing I remember, I was in it and driving. Eventually parked it in front of the station, got out and walked away. To the Stocks in fact. As Kem says, good times. Happen today I would probably still be in the jug.

sad to say, i have not heard of a bar yet in this thread that can match lukes, for, like anything. especially when the lone amoeba was playing. or was he the first amoeba? i think he was the lone amoeba, but...

Now that is a name out of the past. Drenville, if I recall. Great story.

Lukes was meh...they had a cool bar tho. Actually wrote a college paper on Lukes. Harold's club was good for an ass kicking and so was the Cabin bar and the old amvets down by the river. Not sure if anyone mentioned Marvin's bar. I went to school with the some of the kids and they would always supply us with beer, KC drove an old 50'd caddy and would pop the truck and it would be full of beer. . The owner, Johnny lafleshe would make a stop at every bar in town daily for a shot at each one. That was back when men were men and their livers were shot by 40 but they could drink all day long lol.

i thought lukes was better than 'meh', although it certainly had a lot of lowlifes - and a george thoroughgood graffitti or at least carving on one of the seats. isn't that where the pictures on the walls in charlie's were originally?

Is there any truth to the rumor that some of these places went under as soon as the lights were installed at WaGriz?

Higgins and South Third. Sort of across the street from Bernice's Bakery and near the Kettlehouse. Flipper's was the first Casino in Montana supposedly. But now, it is a nice little bear bar with good food.

It’s been a while but the Flippers I’d go too was not for the faint of heart. Usually went there to meet someone for something and it was not burgers. Played a little Keno too and drank some beers while the welfare moms deposited entire welfare checks into the machines with their babies in car seats next to em. My dad worked there for a couple years in the cashiers cage where he kept a bat to “disrupt” any would-be-disrupters. Lots of good times and flippers.
One of only a few bars that had the nickel eater pinball game that you could win money at, along with the Ox and the Elbow Room. Cheap entertainment.

Titties or 10 cent beers? Both would be special.

We were so cheap we used the electronic dart board (never paid) one throw and loser downs a 10 cent beer. Within 20 minutes we were all missing the board. Oh, and the beer left you with the worst hangover ever! I love those days...
