Signing day

Poll the other 8 Big Sky coaches and ask them if Selvig could be a major contributor to their team if he was placed on there. I would put big money that 80% would say yes. I have not always been the biggest fan of Selvig. I wish he was more aggressive and did not disappear in games, but he is a very talented player. Anyone who says he is not a good defender needs to watch more basketball. He is unorthodox for a 7 footer but he a very good Big Sky player, the only thing holding him back from being a first team Big Sky player is himself.

I think you are being a little hard on Selvig. Selvig will be a key element to the griz front line next year. He actually is a good defender, not in the same way Qvale was but with his length and vision he disrupts the passing lanes into the post and does get his hands on quite a few passes elsewhere to. I think he is going to have a big year for the Griz in 2011-12. Again if you want him to be a Qvale he is not that guy. Yes I do agree he is a big man who wants to be a perimeter guy, but unfortunately for him he is too big and not quick enough to play the three, but Tinkle has figured him out and plays him in a way that best compliments his skills.

With dues respect, I have watched Selvig many times, and he is very weak on defense. He has no upper body strength, and gets muscles by inside players, who own him. He is not quick enough to guard smaller players and gets beat routinely. Believe me when I tell you this, if Griz fans are counting on him to take Qvale's place and be an inside force, they are on drugs. It ain't gonna happen. He will be in foul trouble in the first 10 minutes of the game! He is strictly a one-dimensional player, and would not start for me if I were coaching the Griz.

hey Captain Obvious, Selvig won't be taking Qvales spot, just like you will never touch the net. See ya Shorty!

He might not be able to man up against Will Cherry in the back court, but Selvig is a nightmare for opposing coaches in a zone defense.

If I am so obvious, then why am I the only poster who knows that Selvig is a weak sister, who is strictly a spot-up 3-point shooter with no other skills. Yes, he makes a spectacular pass every so ofter, but that is off-set by the turnovers he gives up trying to dribble the ball like a point guard.

Oh, by the way, I am 5'10", and could easily touch the rim when younger. However, Jack Kennedy was president the last time you saw your feet.

Interesting rumor: Griz might be interested in signing Gonzaga transfer 6-6 (junior to be) Maginsto Arop. Arop in the summer before his junior year tore up the Griz summer camp and was named camp MVP (or what ever they call it) He was going to school in Canada at the time and the Griz thought they had a real hidden gem, until Gonzaga stepped into the picture during Arop senior year. Arop (who originally is from Africa) is reported to have a 48" vert and a major athlete.

Since we a re talking about transfers I also hear that EWU's Glen Dean is transferring.

I have been waiting for the Arop to UM rumor to be posted. As for Dean, I thought he had decided to stay at EWU after getting a chance to talk with Hayford but I guess he could have changed his mind again over the last couple weeks.

I don't think we should recruit a "post"... Let the athletes we have Drive, Draw, Dunk or Dish back out to the other smallish guards and fowards we have. Why add a "clogger" that just makes it hard for our quick guys to penetrate. Let's open it up and fill it up. We need to fill Dahlberg back up, and slow down, dump the ball into the "big guy" basketball ain't gonna do it. My friendly opinion.

I agree 100%. I would play the quicker, smaller players........full-court press and trap constantly, and run-n-gun....ala Duquense. We have the players now to do this. Selvig is not one of them.

This would be cool! I like Manny, and I am sad o see him leave GU. If UM could get him, it would be awesome. He's a freakish athlete and he can knock down open threes pretty well. He was one of GU's best looking rebounders too. I don't know why his PT went down so much. Some thought he was a defensive liability, but I guess I didn't see that.

You're Funny

What type of player would fit your team better than Derek? A long, mobile, skilled, intelligent defense, shooting, pick and pop big.

The player you just described has no resemblance to Selvig.

When Selvig plays well, we are a different team. If he can get a little stronger and show more consistency next year he will be all conference next season. When your power forward can pull the bigs out and can shoot and pass the ball (which selvig does very well) it opens up the key for your guards to drive and penetrate. Defensively, its unfair to expect him to be as effective as Qvale. He does get puched around a bit, but he is also smart about it and does force turnovers. Selvig will be one of the best and most important players on our team next year and if he wants could play professionaly over seas after he is done here.

Selvig will never see either ALL-Conference status, or the court over-seas. Remember you read it here.

Grizbacker1, I don't recall seeing the phony Vietnam stories. Can you post a link or is this something that he told you in a local establishment over beers?

Just thought it might be entertaining, now that we have a long painful wait until Aug/Sept and football. 8-)
