MBBALL Semifinal Game Thread

Griz vs. Vandys tomorrow night! Idaho has not played in the Big Sky title game since 1993 😳 (played in the WAC title game in 2014). Mitchell and Rasmussen have been balling but it’ll be their 4th game in 5 days with only about a 20 hour turnaround and a late night. Should be a hell of a game!

CHOKE!!!!! CHOKE!!!! CHOKE!!!!
I am livid! Furious! That was one of the worst coaching jobs that I have seen in the history of Montana basketball. Maybe in all the years I’ve watched college basketball.
Could not break the press. And with old mo clearly on their side we did nothing to stop it, like a counter press.
As much good as Money did for his career, Travis pretty much ruined his tonight.
Might want to take a cold shower. Give PS some credit for their athleticism. They’re a good team. If you’ve watched Griz BB you know that has been our Achilles heel for a long time. I don’t think it’s a Travis issue but the type of players he recruits.

What about stopping the dribble, my god to let the player get the inbounds pass and dribble the length of the court !!!!!!

Last year the press break was better especially with veteran guys with Whitney. This really is a pretty young group. No doubt it is frustrating to watch especially this year.It was good to see Henderson get a chance and step up. You could see how much his teammates like him when they celebrated for him and had him place the sticker on the bracket post game. That shows to me even with the ups and downs of this season Travis has kept them together. But hell Griz are in the Big Sky Championship game for the 7th time in 11 years! Every other team in Big Sky would love that!

People can bitch about coaching all they want, but at the end of the day:

- they won, and beat the #1 team for the third time this year
- they are in the chipper for third year in a row
- Travis has gotten them to chipper 5 of his 11 seasons
- for as frustrating as they get offensively that was a master class in defense, and Travis had a lot to do with that. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Agree, I actually think it is championship 7 out of 11 seasons.

Nice summary writeup. city isn't going to enjoy the last paragraph though . . .

Money Williams is putting on another March show, and the Montana Grizzlies are one win away from another BSC Tournament championship. Williams scored 32 points as the No. 4-seeded Griz built a big cushion and then survived a late Portland State surge, knocking off the top-seeded Vikings 75-72 Tuesday night at Idaho Central Arena in the Big Sky semifinals. Montana controlled the first half, taking a 39-24 lead into the break, and later stretched the advantage to 51-32 with just over nine minutes to play. But Portland State didn’t go away — the Vikings poured in 48 second-half points and clawed all the way back to make it a one-possession game in the final seconds. Portland State pulled within one point twice in the final 28 seconds, but Montana answered at the line. Williams and Tyler Isaak hit free throws down the stretch to close it out and send the Griz back to the conference championship game for the third straight year.

After the final horn, head coach Travis DeCuire summed up a tense finish with a familiar Montana brand of honesty: “One thing about the Griz we like to keep it interesting. We have a hungry group though. The guys scrapped and made the plays they needed to make when they need to make them to win the ball game.” And if Williams’ week in Boise feels like dĂ©jĂ  vu, that’s because it is. One night after dropping 40 points in Montana’s quarterfinal win over Northern Colorado, Williams backed it up with 32 more — giving him 72 combined points in two games at the Big Sky Tournament in Boise. Asked postgame about his mindset heading into another big night, Williams didn’t hesitate: “Money did you wake up feeling like you were going to have another big day?” “Pretty much. I woke up and was like we got to get this dub. To be honest we matchup well with Portland State. Have a lot of confidence in my guys. It goes back to having a new team. I want them to have the best experience. We have two seniors that are done after this and I just want to do it for them and that's why I play.”

Money has had a great tourney so far after mailing it in many times earlier in the season. It seems like a job interview for him as to where he’ll end up next year. It was funny that after the game, while the rest of the team went to the locker room to celebrate, Money went to the stands to celebrate with friends, family, and I think his agent. He stayed for pictures with whoever until they grabbed him for a tv interview. Can’t imagine his teammates liked that.

One thing that stood out to me was....letting PSU roll the ball to darn near mid-court on just about every in-bounds play they had with about 5 min left in the game to the end of the game. The clock is your friend. You don't need to try to steal the ball and get out of defensive position, but a little token pressure to not let them save those precious seconds. They did that against NCU as well. Hopefully it doesn't matter moving forward.

A funny note, listening to Riley with about 2 min left in the game he said "no one could have scripted how this game is ending"..... ummmm my guy, have you not watched any of the games where they've given up the lead exactly like this all year? Of course you could have made a relatively good guess it would get close. The way games have gone this year, it would have been more surprising if the Griz ended up winning by 20 something after being up 19. đŸ€Ł

I think this may be your second post that has felt like AI. Are you getting AI summaries and posting them here? I don’t really care, I’m just curious.

That has always frustrated me, in every game (Griz or not) we watch. I suppose the coaches who don't challenge that have decided the few seconds it allows doesn't help enough to make up for the disruption of your defensive set.

And the semis 9 out of 11. Which is ridiculous when you think about it.
Getting out of the Big Sky would help the basketball program tremendously. Football only to FBS should be a non starter because the basketball program needs to get out of this moribund conference asap. There is a good chance one of the worst Griz teams recently wins the conference today mostly because the Big Sky is terrible in basketball.

I suspect he stayed on the court because he was asked to so they could conduct the tv interview. I'm fairly confident his teammates were juuuuuuuust fine with it.

You post like a basketball coach. Ha.
