Selvig out for season with stress fracture

The University of Montana men's basketball team will have to do without Derek Selvig for the remainder of the season.
The 7-foot redshirt freshman has a stress fracture in his left foot, he said Wednesday evening.
Selvig is on crutches and his foot is in a boot. He said doctors told him not to put weight on it for three weeks.
“We're going to hope that maybe after three weeks - we'll see how the recovery goes - that I'll make it back for a Big Sky tournament game,” Selvig said.
Selvig is averaging 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds while playing more than 11 minutes a game. Selvig's absence could mean small forward Jack McGillis slides over to power forward for some of his minutes. Vassy Banny, who backs up McGillis, might also see more court time.
Selvig said he first noticed the pain during the Grizzlies' game at Eastern Washington on Jan. 21.
“There never was a specific injury,” Selvig said. “The pain got worse ... but I'd put ice on it and could go for practice. It kind of gradually came on.”
The stress fracture was diagnosed after an MRI on Tuesday. Selvig had a CT scan on Wednesday, but is still awaiting those results.
“The doctor told me there's a strong chance it's a stress fracture and that the CT scan would confirm it,” Selvig said. “I think we caught it early. I'm trying to stay positive.”
The Griz, who play at Montana State on Saturday, have won four straight games to climb into second place in the Big Sky Conference.
“It's tough,” Selvig said. “It's tough for any player to have an injury that causes them to sit out. I'm glad it wasn't in the middle of the season. But I'm pretty bummed out to miss the rest of the season, especially since we're playing so well lately.”
