Selvig out for season with stress fracture
By BOB MESEROLL Missoulian sports editor

The University of Montana men's basketball team will have to do without Derek Selvig for the remainder of the season.

The 7-foot redshirt freshman has a stress fracture in his left foot, he said Wednesday evening.

Selvig is on crutches and his foot is in a boot. He said doctors told him not to put weight on it for three weeks.

“We're going to hope that maybe after three weeks - we'll see how the recovery goes - that I'll make it back for a Big Sky tournament game,” Selvig said.

Selvig is averaging 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds while playing more than 11 minutes a game. Selvig's absence could mean small forward Jack McGillis slides over to power forward for some of his minutes. Vassy Banny, who backs up McGillis, might also see more court time.

Selvig said he first noticed the pain during the Grizzlies' game at Eastern Washington on Jan. 21.

“There never was a specific injury,” Selvig said. “The pain got worse ... but I'd put ice on it and could go for practice. It kind of gradually came on.”

The stress fracture was diagnosed after an MRI on Tuesday. Selvig had a CT scan on Wednesday, but is still awaiting those results.

“The doctor told me there's a strong chance it's a stress fracture and that the CT scan would confirm it,” Selvig said. “I think we caught it early. I'm trying to stay positive.”

The Griz, who play at Montana State on Saturday, have won four straight games to climb into second place in the Big Sky Conference.

“It's tough,” Selvig said. “It's tough for any player to have an injury that causes them to sit out. I'm glad it wasn't in the middle of the season. But I'm pretty bummed out to miss the rest of the season, especially since we're playing so well lately.”

This really puts alot more pressure on Qvale, Jordan, McGillis, and Sharp. They are all capable, ? is if are they willing game in game out?

too bad it didn't happen earlier for a medical red-shirt

He already had a redshirt year last year, so it would have been very tough get a medical hardship and a 6th year of elligablity.

I can name a few BSC guys that have done so. It does happen, but it is rare.

This short article says Selvig's out for "at least three weeks". Nothing about `for the season'.

You are right has happened, most of the time a kid needs to wait until his 5th year (senior) and then apply for a hardship case. The NCAA looks at the kids grades, what type of injury and then they flip a coin to decide whether to grant it. it is all very mysterious, yes but it does happen.

anytime i hear stress fracture in the foot on a big man i think of the possibilities of reocurring injuries throughout his college career. i hope he doesn't turn out to be one of those big men casualties.

I thought the same thing, I think it might be wise even if he is better 3-4 weeks to sit him down for a good while and let things heal 100%. Humans were not meant to be 7-0 tall, and when they get that tall sometimes something has to give. On the plus side for Selvig he really is on the light side for being 7-0 tall. A lot of the recurring stress fracture foot problem tend to happen and are aggravated the big men with lot of weight on them. let it heal and take the hit of not having his 11 minutes and 3 points a game this year so he is healthy in his junior and senior year. Not to mention the rest of his life.

I haven't been a big fan of "Dirk" Selvig until the last couple of games. Hes been big off the bench giving Hasquet some rest but ultimately not a HUGE loss for our squad we should do alright without him. I'd like 2 see us start Qvale in the middle and Sharpy and Jordo at forwards and stads and aj in the backcourt and then use Jack as a Manu Ginobili type player off the bench. Get Jack a lot of minutes off the bench and rotate them around that way but thats just me.

I talked to Doug Sunday and he said it's not a stress fracture, so to speak. It's as close to a stress fracture as one could get w/o being a stress fracture. I know, I know...hahaha.

He had some discompfort so they booted him and put him on crutches, if all goes well he should be ready come BSC tourney time.
