I do agree that PC is out of control. There was a new high school being started in Utah, and they wanted their mascot to be the Cougars (apparently because of BYU), but the school board voted it down because it could be offensive to middle-aged women.

One that I can't believe is still in place is the Dickinson Midgets (in ND).

A good friend of mine is a former Dickinson Midget. From what I understand, at some point the Dickinson school board started to get worried that the mascot might be offensive, so approached the Little People of America, who basically told them that they didn't give a rat's ass. So, the Midgets they remain. Apparently, little people have thicker skin than certain other groups.

And even better one in ND was the Devils Lake Satans. They eventually succumbed to the pressure and are now the Firebirds. Lame.

That is very interesting. I didn't know the story behind the Midgets. Thanks.

And they once called themselves the proud Sioux Nation. I lived in that area for a few years in the late 70's. Times change but trying to rewrite history to make an issue when no one can be sure, serves no purpose. If it is not a term that refers to a people, there should not be an issue in using it.

The NCAA failed to enforce selection fairness in the bowl system, failed to kick the Idaho's of the world down into the proper football subdivision, failed to create a true championship in it's highest football subdivision.

Instead the NCAA is bullying little old UND over the university nickname. What bullshit. Now So. Dak. State won't play UND. Someone should put the state's politicians on the spot to defend this Left Coast posturing. I'd like to see John Thune squirm over his state's posturing on this garbage.

Then the tribes can stfu and focus on some real problems facing the Rez; and stop worrying about a f'ing cartoon character on the side of a football helmet.

my understanding is that two ND tribes had to approve of the mascot for the NCAA to get off their backs (like what happened at Florida State). One tribe did but the chief of the other tribe would not even allow the tribe to vote on it. I'm sure ol' mighty chief would change his mind if a few green backs flew his way.
