SDSU joining growing number of schools to snub UND

I do agree that PC is out of control. There was a new high school being started in Utah, and they wanted their mascot to be the Cougars (apparently because of BYU), but the school board voted it down because it could be offensive to middle-aged women.

One that I can't believe is still in place is the Dickinson Midgets (in ND).

A good friend of mine is a former Dickinson Midget. From what I understand, at some point the Dickinson school board started to get worried that the mascot might be offensive, so approached the Little People of America, who basically told them that they didn't give a rat's ass. So, the Midgets they remain. Apparently, little people have thicker skin than certain other groups.

And even better one in ND was the Devils Lake Satans. They eventually succumbed to the pressure and are now the Firebirds. Lame.
That is very interesting. I didn't know the story behind the Midgets. Thanks.

Fighting Sioux, yea really degrading. We have enough problems in the country without making an issue out of nothing.

the name sioux itself is an insult if you know the history
So...if they changed it to the Fighting Lakota's would there be an issue since Lakota is what the Sioux call themselves? And actually the name is not degrading it is taken from the word "Nadouessioux" which is the Ojibwa word for enemy.
Actually, I don't think this is entirely correct, or at least some Lakota don't feel it is correct. According to an article in the Lakota Country Times (a newspaper from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservation), Sioux is a derogatory slang word that means devil. Here is the article that goes into more detail on how this member of the Tribe feels about the nickname. http://www.lakotacountrytimes.com/news/2009-03-19/guest/020.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

...or it means "little rattle" to these Lakota???

Personally, I have no idea, but this writer doesn't agree with that. It sounds like he feels that Sioux was improperly translated to little snake (little rattle), but actually means little serpents (or little devils).

I think this is the problem that UND is facing. Different tribes disagree on the translation of the word.

Yeah, I was kind of trying to get at that. No one seems to know where it comes from but I am beginning to believe it means "thin skinned"

And they once called themselves the proud Sioux Nation. I lived in that area for a few years in the late 70's. Times change but trying to rewrite history to make an issue when no one can be sure, serves no purpose. If it is not a term that refers to a people, there should not be an issue in using it.

Hey, the indians were pissed that the code name for Bin Laden was Geronimo.

Yeah. I think they should just go back to their original nickame (the Flickertails) and start using their actual school colors (pink and green)

People will bitch about anything....it's degrades the tribe. :? Yea right. I have spent time on the Blackfeet reservation, the Crow and the Northern Cheyenne and the last thing that Native Americans should be worried about is a college nickname.

from What I have heard about him and the Depaul program improprities . And if that happens here. Can anyone remember Jim Brandenburg and Lee Johnson! They ran Brandenburg out of town and Lee quietly left.

The NCAA failed to enforce selection fairness in the bowl system, failed to kick the Idaho's of the world down into the proper football subdivision, failed to create a true championship in it's highest football subdivision.

Instead the NCAA is bullying little old UND over the university nickname. What bullshit. Now So. Dak. State won't play UND. Someone should put the state's politicians on the spot to defend this Left Coast posturing. I'd like to see John Thune squirm over his state's posturing on this garbage.
"left coast" posturing...unless you are referring to San Diego State, aka, Aztecs, I think you should take a closer look at the map and think beforeyou embarrass yourself.

a few that were vocal... not many otherwise... pretty much fizzled quick

I'd guess... any that were not apache, didnt really care what it was called

How long until the Irish get together and shut down Norte Dame's name? Most likely, not until bars close @ 5:00 pm.

I'd change the mascot to the Fighting Frontiersmen. Put a bearded white guy with a Winchester 1887 and a coon skin cap on their logo.

Then the tribes can stfu and focus on some real problems facing the Rez; and stop worrying about a f'ing cartoon character on the side of a football helmet.

(**Disclaimer** I am both Native American and a UND alum. And I abhor PC cause-heads who claim dehumanization at every turn while never doing anything tangible to make a difference.)

So why did it take until 2010 for tribes to get pissed about the mascot??????

my understanding is that two ND tribes had to approve of the mascot for the NCAA to get off their backs (like what happened at Florida State). One tribe did but the chief of the other tribe would not even allow the tribe to vote on it. I'm sure ol' mighty chief would change his mind if a few green backs flew his way.

wow...racist peer pressure is alive and well on egriz...i grew up with this sentiment from 'friends' in school and I still feel sorry for them...
