I had a GREAT time at the scrimmage last Fri, and staying the night to enjoy Missoula. Glad we made the drive over for the scrimmage. I was actually REALLY pleased with what I saw. And what I saw was a good looking football team, one that gave a lot of effort and gave a sh!t. They were pretty dang crisp and motivated if you ask me.
The position group that most blew me away was QB. Hill (14-17 for 82%) Phillips (13-18 for 72%) were both on FIRE. They scanned the field and threw on the money to the right target. It was an impressive day for these two stalwarts. The upper-classmen played like it. Jensen looked like a pressing R-Fr. (8-18 for 44% and 3 INT). He''s a stud, just not Fri night.
The RBs looked good too. Some of that was because the DL was missing two beasts at Nose Tackle in Davidson and Shaw, and 2016 LB starters Buss. Strahm and Banks. However the RBs ran hard and got up field with purpose. I loved when Favors (8 carries for 77 yards) lowered his head and shoulder pads and delivered a crushing blow to the DB (McKinley) who attempted to tackle Favors high, and what seemed like just THUD speed by McKinley. It happened right in front of me. Green (9 carries for 34 yards) looked quick/elusive and appears he will be a good one for four years. Will be nice to get Jeremy Calhoun back, he's a prize winner.
Receivers were led by the usual suspects, Justin Calhoun 3-66 and 2 TD, Keenan Curran 5-46, Jerry Louie-McGee 6-35. A couple R-Fr flashed, Brennan Corbin 3-28 and 1 TD, Jed Nagler ran a few nice out-routes to go 3-18. Junior, plays at the Z, Mitch McGlaughlin had a real nice elusive run with great effort. After all the hub-ub surrounding Akem and Toure, we were disappointed, but it was just one scrimmage. And they are just R-Fr.
The offense racked up 452 yards and 3 touchdowns on 89 plays. Also 2 FG, one med and one short.
The Defense was lead by Hunter McKenzie with 9 tackles, Ryan McKinley with 6, Jace Lewis, Vika Fa'atuiese and Shayne Cochran each had 5 tackles.
Sack leaders were Tucker Schye with 3, R-Fr Randy Rodriguez had 2, Jesse Sims and Cy Steele each had 1 apiece.
Interceptions were had by R-Fr Dareon Nash 1, an athletic INT by Markell Sanders 1, and a 38 yard pick-six returned by Korey Alexander.
There were a few pass breakups as well: Hunter McKenzie 1, Josh Egbo 1, Andrew Harris 1.
Mike (MLB), R-Fr Le Texier kept sticking his nose in there, was injured a couple times, and kept coming back for more. Tough kid. Fellow preferred walk-on, Star (OLB), Jace Lewis was active (one of the leading tacklers). His most impressive tackle was in the open field at the LOS, soon after JLM caught a bubble pass. Lewis is my pick for the next #37.
