Scrimmage #2 recap

Favors did a little better this scrimmage at RB. Ran a little angrier but still don't think he's the answer to spell Calhoun. Really hoping we bring in a transfer here and DB over the summer.

I hate it. Creates an advantage for the defense.

It worked pretty well for Clemson

I don't know much, but every single video clip shows the center snapping the ball right after the clap. Every single time. Maybe they should work on varying the snap during spring ball? I get that it is early and the coaches are trying to match the puzzle pieces - but the snap count is going to have to change. Kind of Pavlovian in nature for the defense, I think I actually saw one of the LB's start to salivate when RP clapped his hands.

They also forced a few offsides when the timing of the hand clap and snap were intentionally changed with a delay. Did it in both scrimmages so far.

Well that is promising then. The NDSU playoff game keeps running through my mind.

I really like what I've seen from Green so far this spring. He's a very patient, mature runner who hits the gap with authority when it opens. I expect good things from him this fall as he gets comfortable with the offense and starts running behind the first string line.

Just one more clarification on the "clap/snap" scenario and I promise I will let it go. So if it is like HHB says, and the clap simply signifies readiness, is there predetermined time lapse called in the huddle? For example is there a clap and then a 1000-one, 1000-two count that everyone is doing in their head and then firing out(assuming the count was on two)? Or are the offensive lineman looking in to see when the center snaps the ball? The former would seem to be just working with a silent count all the time and the latter doesn't seem very efficient and might be the reason for poor offensive line play if they wait and are kind of on their heels. Both scenarios would seem to lead to potential mistakes in pressure situations but that is a unproven hypothesis on my part. There - I'm done with the topic.

Well, considering they don't huddle, that scenario would be problematic....

I liked the improvement. Although, a lot of key pieces were missing on defense...

Phillips looked good - quick release, strong arm.

Still missing that receiver who can really stretch the field. But overall, improvement.

Four of those defensive pieces were in sweats on the sideline.

Five, Banks, Buss, Strahm, Davidson, and Shaw
Kinda betting that Banks loses some snaps to some of the younger guys.

I could easily see that happening as well...

I agree we could use a little more depth at RB. I kind of think of Favors as a Thomas Brooks-Fletcher type of back with his current build, and think he'll be valuable this season. I'm really high on Green, he has an amazing hop step and smooth burst straight up the field that reminds me of Chase Reynolds. Moody had a nice run in scrimmage and is probably the fastest of the backs. If Calhoun stays healthy and is the feature back, I like this group quite a bit. Still wish that Holden Ryan would could get some looks at RB, but I haven't heard anything about him lately.

Sophomore Cy Sirmon was the No. 2 defensive end after lining up as No. 2 outside linebacker last week. Cy Steele took his place in the depth chart this week opposite walkon Hunter McKenzie, who had a big day with nine tackles.

Out of the game writeup & didn't notice his name in all the board commentary. Is the McKenzie kid another of those under-the-radar guys?

I'd say yes, under-the-radar guy, but not for long if he continues to play like that (very well)...

Hunter McKenzie -- R-Fr walk-on from Gig Harbor, WA / Peninsula HS. 6'0", 190.

I had a GREAT time at the scrimmage last Fri, and staying the night to enjoy Missoula. Glad we made the drive over for the scrimmage. I was actually REALLY pleased with what I saw. And what I saw was a good looking football team, one that gave a lot of effort and gave a sh!t. They were pretty dang crisp and motivated if you ask me.

The position group that most blew me away was QB. Hill (14-17 for 82%) Phillips (13-18 for 72%) were both on FIRE. They scanned the field and threw on the money to the right target. It was an impressive day for these two stalwarts. The upper-classmen played like it. Jensen looked like a pressing R-Fr. (8-18 for 44% and 3 INT). He''s a stud, just not Fri night.

The RBs looked good too. Some of that was because the DL was missing two beasts at Nose Tackle in Davidson and Shaw, and 2016 LB starters Buss. Strahm and Banks. However the RBs ran hard and got up field with purpose. I loved when Favors (8 carries for 77 yards) lowered his head and shoulder pads and delivered a crushing blow to the DB (McKinley) who attempted to tackle Favors high, and what seemed like just THUD speed by McKinley. It happened right in front of me. Green (9 carries for 34 yards) looked quick/elusive and appears he will be a good one for four years. Will be nice to get Jeremy Calhoun back, he's a prize winner.

Receivers were led by the usual suspects, Justin Calhoun 3-66 and 2 TD, Keenan Curran 5-46, Jerry Louie-McGee 6-35. A couple R-Fr flashed, Brennan Corbin 3-28 and 1 TD, Jed Nagler ran a few nice out-routes to go 3-18. Junior, plays at the Z, Mitch McGlaughlin had a real nice elusive run with great effort. After all the hub-ub surrounding Akem and Toure, we were disappointed, but it was just one scrimmage. And they are just R-Fr.

The offense racked up 452 yards and 3 touchdowns on 89 plays. Also 2 FG, one med and one short.

The Defense was lead by Hunter McKenzie with 9 tackles, Ryan McKinley with 6, Jace Lewis, Vika Fa'atuiese and Shayne Cochran each had 5 tackles.

Sack leaders were Tucker Schye with 3, R-Fr Randy Rodriguez had 2, Jesse Sims and Cy Steele each had 1 apiece.

Interceptions were had by R-Fr Dareon Nash 1, an athletic INT by Markell Sanders 1, and a 38 yard pick-six returned by Korey Alexander.

There were a few pass breakups as well: Hunter McKenzie 1, Josh Egbo 1, Andrew Harris 1.

Mike (MLB), R-Fr Le Texier kept sticking his nose in there, was injured a couple times, and kept coming back for more. Tough kid. Fellow preferred walk-on, Star (OLB), Jace Lewis was active (one of the leading tacklers). His most impressive tackle was in the open field at the LOS, soon after JLM caught a bubble pass. Lewis is my pick for the next #37.

Forgot to mention that R-Fr Safety Gavin Crow gave me the impression that he is going to be kick cover thumper. He ran down hard, was first downfield, and even though it was not live he delivered a shot to the guy that went to block him.

Now that I think about it, I don't recall seeing R-So WR Lamariel Taylor.

There's been quite a few out of these scrimmages. That's why it's ridiculous when the Missoulian attempts to do a depth chart based off the scrimmage.

I'm thinking Tyree Range is still a possibility. Or has that ship sailed?

It's very quiet on Twitter with him. Maybe someone with more inside knowledge knows if he's visited or will. I am not super hopeful.

I don't think Range is necessary to be honest. I'd rather have an extra CB or tackle.

Green has had a good spring. I think McCombs will come around. Add in Jeremy Calhoun and we have plenty of legs at RB.
