Scrimmage #1 wrap up

I'm not concerned with the QB position. Hill and Phillips are better than Gus at this point. They can actually move.

Question:

The coaches clearly have Jensen over Hill and have all along. How come so many on this board put Hill in the good group and leave out Jensen?

For me, I liked what I saw in the spring scrimmage. I wasn't expecting much from him, being he was new to the team, system, playbook, etc. I like his athleticism, toughness, and leadership. He has really impressed me when he is interviewed.

I am not lobbying for him over Phillips. I just hope Phillips cuts down his propensity for terrible turnovers.

I think the griz Offense is further ahead than normal for this time of year. Usually, because the defense is simpler and they often know what is coming, they usually outplay the offense by quite a bit in the first scrimmage. I think the offense will be fine and will be outrageous by years end. People are harping on the offense but they had 428 yards against a very solid and deep defense. There were a few ticky-tacky sacks but on all of them, the QB was scrambling in what have been significant gains if the Refs hadn't called it so tight.

For petes sake though, the drops, THE DROPS! The QB and the WR seem to be on the same page better than last year but the WR's keep dropping passes. The QB's obviously have faith in Lamarriel Taylor but he had a drop or two. Other guys had drops too. I think to the tune of 5 or 6 drops. Seemed like it anyway. Man, these guys need to be taking 50+ reps on the jugs after practice. The drops have got to be cleaned up.

From what I saw the standout RB that I liked was Terren Moses. He was slashing and dashing through the line and looked like he was made for our offense. We will see how he does picking up blitzes.

As far as Reese P goes. Not excited about another pick 6, he also seems to try to throw into coverage a lot and into some pretty small windows but I like the confidence. I would rather have a Bret Favre fearless gunslinger type who isn't afraid to stretch the field and test his wideouts than someone who is only willing to throw short passes to one or two people. Reese had some great drives and great reads. If he progresses and gets better, and our WR's don't drop balls, sky is the limit.

Everyone seems to want Reese and the offense to dominate and be in midseason form right now. Way too early to expect that plus if they did dominate then we would all be bitching and moaning about Semore and the defense.

Personally I think we are more than fine. My biggest concern was the O-line and they played great, especially considering our QB's ability to scramble and move in the pocket. We will be fine there. Corners played great, RB's are hungry, Safety play is great and intimidating to WR's. LB play was exceptional and Vika F is going to be an all American before he is done here he is a stud and young. He is making a strong case for starting over Strahm. Defensive line, we are going to be hard to run against which will open things up for our LB's and Secondary. I anticipate lots of 3rd and longs for opposing offenses as well as plenty of turnovers for our secondary. Overall I think we are a well balanced team.

From what I saw at the end of the year, your defense better have made HUGE strides in this area because the Cats literally ran all over your defense and pretty much had their way with them all game. Everyone in the entire state knew we were running the ball on damn near every play and you still couldn't stop it. Rumors coming out of Fall Camp in Bozo are sounding like our passing game is going to be leaps and bounds better this year - and running game just as good if not better.

I have good Cats buds who don't drink the blue Kool Aid on the level many of you do. They have told me that Murray has improved some footwork and mechanics but that he still can look like a total shit show in practice. Said he misses wide open receivers and stares down his receivers. As for the good numbers in the scrimmage, they said the secondary was so awful and receivers so open that these guys could have had similar numbers. Now they are very worried about your secondary. They think Murray will be okay but they said it won't be a drastic improvement. They want to see Rovig be a 4 year starter.

Oh that will never happen. If you read everybody's comments on litter box nation, Murray is the GOD of the cats.

Oh trust me I'm not at all the overconfident CAT fan you seem to think I am and of course I'm slightly biased but I typically look at things fairly objectively. No Murray isn't going to be Tom Brady out of the gate but I stand by what I said in that our passing game will be leaps and bounds better than last year. Also am on the same page with Rovig - he's a stud and may be the future of the program, even this year of Murray struggles in the passing game.

Adding some 2016 stats for reference.

Murray:

47/105 for 778 yards, 44.8%
110.62 efficiency rating
Avg 70.7 yards pg
6 TDs 8 Ints

Team: 127-276, 13 TDs 14 Ints
Total yards 1715, 156 yards pg

I asked a Cat player, a starter last year, if Murray's throwing had improved. He said yes, and McGhee was working with him.

Their. OC will also adjust system to fit personnel rather than keeping a system despite personnel issues....square peg round hole is not sound coaching....it is ego

Phillips is garnering the nickname, "P6", for pick-six. Threw them in the spring game, threw one in the first fall practice, and now throws another in the first fall scrimmage. He needs to quit killing the team, harsh, but true. I like him, nice kid and a good player... he just needs to (sometimes) quit forcing balls and making poor throws, as even Colter Nuanez eluded to (forcing balls) at the beginning of camp.

I am watching today's "points for the opponent" throw right now and in slow motion/frame by frame... Phillips throws the ball out to the flat badly over the head and behind the RB (Lee), it's a very poor throw. Lee has to strenuously reach up with one hand, he is only able to get his left fingers (not hand or hands) to barely touch the ball and deflect it to Cowans for the gimme defensive touchdown (who would have intercepted it even if it wasn't barely tipped). The throw was so off-target that Lee ends up on his back after reaching for the ball. Yikes. A simple throw, made into a nightmare.

Phillips 37 yard TD to Simis was an absolutely blown coverage, no one, and I mean no one covered Simis for the quick strike and long run to the endzone. People in the stands had a better chance to cover Simis than the Griz defense. Uffda. Ok that's sarcastic, but honestly that will most likely never happen in a game for our offense. I said in the "5 things" this year thread I was worried about blown secondary coverages, well it didn't take long. Take away that defensive screw-up, and Phillips numbers come down dim some into...1 TD and 2 TO's and just 151 yards passing.

And Phillips fans mocked Hill when Hill threw TDs against backups in the spring game, so lets remind them that Phillips completed his TD fade to a WR who was guarded by backup red-shirt freshman, Gavin Crow.

Things need to improve (whole team), but they will, and after the UW thrashing UM will start to take shape and play better football. GO GRIZ

One name I have not seen mentioned anywhere was Randy Rodriguez. Does anyone know if he played yesterday or is he hurt?

Backup DE, he'll be relied upon a lot this season I believe.

Exactly, which is why I was surprised to not see him listed on the stats sheet. He was always in the backfield at the spring scrimmage I watched a few months ago. Was hoping he wasn't hurt or not playing for some reason.
He played
