Well another 4 or 5 loss season maybe. Honestly no team is perfect in fall camp but I remember plenty of years where there was lots more positive n these kinds of scrimmages. From the sounds of it have they improved from last year . Probably. Is it a big enough leap to produce this year, not likely.

Give me a break. The team has been in full pads for about two practices ahead of this scrimmage. I look for real improvement from the offense this Saturday. I don't ever recall being happy with Hauck's scrimmages. In fact, most of Hauck's offenses were on life support until close to November when they magically started to purr.

Actually just 1, on Saturday. They had Sunday off and then today's.

Well yeah. I remember a lot of white knuckle games with Hauck. Guess the difficulty is trying to get excited from afar. I used to go to the scrimmages when I lived in state. Maybe it just nostalgia ringing through. Also had nothing to do with Egriz back then. Maybe that is why my view point wasn't so tainted. I just remember feeling confident they could pull it together heading into most, not all seasons. Just haven't had that confidence in quite a few years.

After the way last year ended the added scrutiny and skepticism is understandable. I've been pulling for Gresch. Not sure Stitt can afford him learning and gaining experience on the go but our team will be better for it if he picks up steam throughout the season. Only one way to find out. *Gulp*

Good thing I was sitting down for I saw a honest-to-God QB run play, only picked up about 10 or 12 yards though.

Great to hear that the 2nd team OL is looking better. Is that 2nd team mostly Stitt's young Freshmen and Sophomores?

It almost is entirely, except Mike Ralston today for most of the scrimmage

Quote from Stitt on Phillips pick:

The first one that Reese threw a pick on is a new play and we'll probably toss it out,” head coach Bob Stitt said. “That one's on me. I don't like it and the play had Reese's eyes in the wrong place and it wasn't fair.”

Overall, I think we were right where we needed to be for the first scrimmage, and I know we will show much more improvement heading into the second scrimmage on Saturday. Overall, (I wasn't at the scrimmage) but based on everything I've seen I don't think Phillips played too bad. His numbers for the scrimmage were actually pretty good. Seems like he had a lot of nice plays today too. I've been a fan of Jensen this whole time and he seemed a little underwhelming, Hill I thought was better late in the scrimmage. Based off of today's performance, I'd feel most comfortable with Phillips being our QB. I see bright things coming this season and I know the improvement is being made. I feel really good about this season. Go Griz!

Thanks for the info today Brint and thanks Shaun for the box scores.
One thing as per box scores, Phillips #s are good. 68% completion rate and 7+ yards per attempt with best WRs not getting many snaps.
A little fine tuning and getting the young WRs reps...things look good.
Refreshing to see realistic views on team. Sky isn't falling UM gets a deserved 31 ranking...good starting point.
Looking forward to how this group of seniors perform.

haha, calm down Debbie Downer. I've seen far worse fall scrimmages from teams that finished better. I'd have to go back and look but I'd say today was a better showing than most scrimmages we saw last year and probably half of 2015's as well.

The 2012 scrimmages (year without JJ) were absolutely abysmal. 2015's weren't fantastic either. Actually that 2013 spring scrimmage the first year back with JJ (up in Ronan) was horrible for the offense. Granted, it was like 40 mph winds, but the offense was anemic and they ended winning 10 games, so...

I thought it was much better than the spring game. These are tough, either the offense isn't doing much, which means the defense is dominating, or vice versa.

My thoughts
I thought Phillips was the best quarterback today, he had the most command regardless if it was the 1st or 2nd string.

His first interception, wouldn't have ever happened if his reciever (think it was Toure) wouldn't have stopped his route the play before. Easy touchdown if he would have kept going, one more step.
Next play was the interception, ball was a touch high, bounced off of backs hands up into the air for easy interception.

Both sides had their moments, liked that the offense went over the middle more. Had a few passes dropped that should have been caught. Seemed like the offense was trying to be more patient.

Some of the touch tackles on the quarterbacks would have been tackles, quite a few of them wouldn't have been, tough to guage that.

That freshman running back from OK, is extremely quick.

3 of the offensive starters, Calhoun, JLM and Curran only played the first series than brought in younger guys to get some reps.

I've seen much worse scrimmages, and I've seen better ones. Thought the OLine looked probably as good as I've seen for the past few years. 2nd string last couple of years was a sieve, not that way today. Left side looks pretty solid really, need to work a little bit on the right. Jackson had some plays where he dominated then he would have a bad play, much better than the spring scrimmages and game though.

There is no doubt we have some playmakers, need to find ways to get the ball in their hands in the open field. Toure is fast, he has another gear.

My thoughts, take them for what they're worth.

This is what I also saw.

What I'm hoping to see in the scrimmages is progress in each one. If we can just keep getting better each week, lots of potential.

Griz still searching following first scrimmage

We were very average if you want my honest opinion,” said Akem, who received praise from Phillips for his improved leadership this camp. “We have a lot we need to work on but it’s good to get it on film, get back in the lab and get to work.”

I think we are going to really like this guy. BW would tell you he is one of the more vocal leaders from a frosh WR that he has seen. That has me excited.

Phillips is garnering the nickname, "P6", for pick-six. Threw them in the spring game, threw one in the first fall practice, and now throws another in the first fall scrimmage. He needs to quit killing the team, harsh, but true. I like him, nice kid and a good player... he just needs to (sometimes) quit forcing balls and making poor throws, as even Colter Nuanez eluded to (forcing balls) at the beginning of camp.

I am watching today's "points for the opponent" throw right now and in slow motion/frame by frame... Phillips throws the ball out to the flat badly over the head and behind the RB (Lee), it's a very poor throw. Lee has to strenuously reach up with one hand, he is only able to get his left fingers (not hand or hands) to barely touch the ball and deflect it to Cowans for the gimme defensive touchdown (who would have intercepted it even if it wasn't barely tipped). The throw was so off-target that Lee ends up on his back after reaching for the ball. Yikes. A simple throw, made into a nightmare.

Phillips 37 yard TD to Simis was an absolutely blown coverage, no one, and I mean no one covered Simis for the quick strike and long run to the endzone. People in the stands had a better chance to cover Simis than the Griz defense. Uffda. Ok that's sarcastic, but honestly that will most likely never happen in a game for our offense. I said in the "5 things" this year thread I was worried about blown secondary coverages, well it didn't take long. Take away that defensive screw-up, and Phillips numbers come down dim some into...1 TD and 2 TO's and just 151 yards passing.

And Phillips fans mocked Hill when Hill threw TDs against backups in the spring game, so lets remind them that Phillips completed his TD fade to a WR who was guarded by backup red-shirt freshman, Gavin Crow.

Things need to improve (whole team), but they will, and after the UW thrashing UM will start to take shape and play better football. GO GRIZ

Not from anyone who matters. Not his teammates on either side of the ball or his coaches. He's only been here one year and is as respected in that lockerroom as any player on the roster. Like I said, no one who matters is calling him that.

Ok sensitive George.

By the way, you certainly don't matter.

Never said I did. I just said the team and coaches don't call him that and THEY are the only ones who matter

Thanks BW and 72'. Good info and write ups as usual.
Still, my biggest concern is the coaching, the schemes, the game planning, the adjustments, etc.

GO GRIZ!!

One name I have not seen mentioned anywhere was Randy Rodriguez. Does anyone know if he played yesterday or is he hurt?

Forget concerns over the OL. They're much improved from the sounds of it.

QB officially the biggest concern.
