Scrimmage #1 recap

Shaun Rainy is to sports reporting as Mr. T is to women. He has a general idea about where and what everything is but all of his information comes from second hand sources.

Total sarcasm about Mr. Rainey!

Not so much about Mr. Titleist.

I heart you.

Some promising plays but overall a fairly uninspiring performance overall.

We got some very good athletes, great kids...but will they succeed in the offensive system offered?

I continue to have little confidence in a wonky hurry up approach, decent DC's figured out how to defense it last year. Expect more of same this year.

Likes:
- Secondary
- Jensen's poise and control of the offense
- Akem busting his ass after an INT to deliver the hit of the scrimmage
- Sandry returning punts
- LB depth
- DL

Dislikes:
- WR drops. Something that plagued this position last year - it has to improve.
- QB's.. If the first read wasn't there they were scrambling. Guess what guys, they aren't that fast..
- Run game struggled. But, what do you expect in this offense?
- O-line. Jackson will start at RT unless Ralston adapts quickly.
- This offense. I hate it.

On the topic of LB depth stemming from this scrimmage, with Banks, Strahm, and Buss all watching spring ball the depth that's being developed at linebacker is pretty wild. That'll hopefully carry over to ST coverage and production this season. Last years ST had a lot of brand new guys and many errors were made in coverage. Now they're returning a lot of experience and our 2s are looking like a solid starting corps...

Should we be concerned that the offense (1's or 2's) didn't have more production over a defense missing the presumed 3 starting linebackers? I'm great with the development of the depth at linebacker but I'm a defense oriented type of guy.

The absence of any sign of a running game with so many back ups at LB sure looks concerning ....I realize #1 back is not playing but still either holes are not there or backs are not getting it done

FYI: In the FBS nation championship game, Clemson ran 99 plays -- 42 rushing and 57 passing. The rushing offense (with sacks, etc., of course) put up 91 yards. Alabama ran 66 plays and had 221 yards of rushing offense. And Clemson lost two fumbles versus none for Alabama. Return yardage (punts and KO) was pretty much a wash: Clemson about 25, 'Bama about 28. Overall, Clemson dominated TOP (34:44 to 25:16), had a healthy lead in total yards (511 to 376), and -- the stat that matters -- won 35-31. Pretty good, I'd say, for a "wonky" offense that ran more plays per game than the Griz, and gained more yards per game ... each playing their own level of competition.

Agree 100% here. I was planning on posting this after the game, but honestly forgot. I actually like the offense. I just hope we get to see it "all" in the coming years. They are very similar imo. Bubble screens as run plays that if broken go big. Just enough run that it has to be respected.

I'm guessing the QB's need reps passing and not handing off. The biggest question going into this season is QB ability, not running game so I imagine that is the focus of the spring.

It better carry over to ST play!

Being a hard-ass here, but that effort/talent is unacceptable. You gotta catch that. It's gotta be natural for you/instinct.

This is why UM needs to recruit receivers that are mainly recruited by colleges to play receiver, and not players that were recruited by the Air Force to play safety (Eaton, Curran).

If there is ONE position group this staff can recruit it is absolutely the LB position. The kids they have signed so far are STUDS.

Being sarcastic, right? Rainey is a good guy getting the best info from the team and coaches out there, IMO.

Rainey seems like a good guy. I watch his sportscasts every night. He does a great job covering the Griz. You can tell he's interested in UM, even though he's from San Diego.

Twenty bucks to anyone who can try to catch the ball with Strong hitting you.

You are responsible for your own medical bills. Good luck.

JLM claimed/joked that the reason why he did a back-flip into the endzone was because he saw J-Strong (well know big-hitter) closing in, that the back-flip was the better option of the two.

Hmmm....interesting. Perhaps working in favor of Clemson, light years from our situation. I ever reminded of recent pathetic outcomes at the hands of NC and MSU.
I am not sold on this approach, but will see if Stitt and company will make system work.

Don't be obsessive.

Too bad none of these QBs have the arm strength or vision of BG.

Guessing you weren't at scrimmage.

It was a legit question. Let's just hope one turns out to be the leader the offense has lacked the last couple years. And to be honest, I hope they have better vision than BG.
