San Diego Toreros Scouting Report

I would like to see a real ass beating here. Like 60-7. Lots of D and the newfound offensive scheme rains points down. That should put some fear in the red carpet bandits.

... IdaGriz, when you get here, is the Pioneer the conference that you just can't believe gets an autobid?

Go Griz!!
Here's the other background I mentioned earlier about
Pioneer League Out-of-Conference Games

The situation is actually not quite as terrible as I thought. The 11 teams played 38 OOC games.

Of those, one was a 1-A opponent (Appalachian State, which crushed Campbell 66-0).

They played 21 1-AA opponents, slightly over half of the OOC games. They were collectively 4-17 in those games. The cumulative records of the opponents in the four wins was 11-31 ... not exactly quality opponents. Losses included games with Richmond and Eastern Kentucky, but they also managed to lose to the likes of Georgetown (3-8) and VMI (2-10).

They played 16 lower division opponents (that's 42%): 7 D-II, 2 D-III, 6 NAIA, and 1 [whatever*].
* That “College of Faith - Charlotte” outfit discussed in the link I provided earlier.

For comparison, the 13 Big Sky teams played 50 OOC games, and 41 of them were against 1-AA or 1-A opponents. Only 9 were against lower-tier teams (18%): 7 D-II and 2 NAIA.

All things considered, it would be a good idea for the Big Sky to schedule more Pioneer League OOC games. They already expect to travel a lot, with teams scattered literally coast to coast. Why not come to Montana? I'll bet the Griz could guarantee them more money than they make with a home game, even with the cost of travel. It would cost UM more than say, a Fort Lewis, but it would count as a FCS game.

I'll just leave this here...

Good idea. Stealing a page out of Poly's playbook I see. :thumb: (minus crapping the bed of course).

Thanks for the research. I'm wondering why the committee decided to give the Pioneer an autobid then? Is this just another WTF idea that doesn't have an answer?

The average temperature for their 10 games, listed above, is over 71 degrees.

Safe to say they can leave the sunscreen and beach shorts back in San Diego. 8-)

I understand that we don't want to look past this team. Last year, CCU came into WaGriz and punched us in the mouth. I don't see that happening two years in a row though. I bet that what happened last year with CCU will prove to be very valuable for this year's team. We win this one.

Go Griz!!

Coastal Carolina last year had 3 players that went to the NFL this season. RB Lorenzo Taliaferro with the Ravens, and WR Matt Hazel with the Dolphins, and DB Mario Norman with the Ravens.

This is San Diego's first time in the playoffs. They are not the same animal that came to Missoula last season for the playoff game.

GRIZ need to play a little beach volleyball with these Toreros, and spike them! :silly:

I want us to be up and rolling for this game. Players best not overlook this team or we will have one hell of a time winning.

The school is a good one. Football is a second thought. But they can play some good football so we must be ready for them. Hope our crowd gets in and helps us out.

Thanks for the report Brint. Now we await Monte's notes and retorts.

Meet our foe: http://www.usdtoreros.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/112314aaa.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The video shows nice and respectful players (one player grew up watching games in WA Griz Stadium), and coach. Both players mention the cold.

USD WR -- "I know it's going to be cold. We actually looked up the weather first thing. And it said a high of 31, wind chill of 18 or something. So it should be a cold game, but pretty fun."

They sure seem like a nice group of guys. Hopefully they enjoy their visit to Montana, and leave with a loss!

Hopefully they have some fans make the trip. I know the players will enjoy the experience, initially.

It's a cool story, first time ever in the playoffs for the program. Hard team not to like.

Great stuff BW. Would you mind putting standard error bars or 95% confidence intervals on your graphs so that I can see if the differences are meaningful or just due to chance.

Best,

Watched the video of the CP game (again), and also looked over the physical stats for the Toreros ("bull chasers" :D ).

They seem to be somewhat under-sized, but not dramatically so. Also, they do have some athletes on the roster. Given this opportunity, they are going to be motivated beyond belief -- and they do have some quickness to possibly be a problem here and there. That could off-set their lack of experience in post-season football.

Odd as it might seem, the beat-down by CP could be a plus for them. A look at their schedule shows that they played nobody, and I mean nobody, before the Mustangs. Aside from their cream-puff Pioneer schedule, their toughest [NOT] opponent was Princeton, whom they beat 39-29. So they had no way to know how physical and quick a "real" FCS opponent could be. The game with CP will have given them a taste (and film) of that. A week is not much time, but at least they learned what they have to prepare for.

I believe the Griz will win, but I think the bull-stabbers -- with the "high" of a first playoff appearance -- will be more trouble early than many people expect. (Yes, I know UM under-rated CC last year and got creamed -- but I do not see anything like that level of talent on the Toreros.)
