The comments are worth acknowledging as much as the article. There was one positive comment, but

“Thank you Tom. Finally, local journalists are willing to consider the cost of Wood.
If you were on campus, you would see that recent fiascos like Lil Yachty and paying for Stanislaus students to attend the Montana game (in a failed attempt to make attendance look good on national TV) are just the tip of the iceberg. Wood claims again and again that funding his athletics push in no way reduces funding for academics; wrong! He has the power to reduce future student fees but will not do so. He states publicly that the students strongly support his athletic push; wrong!
Meanwhile the majority of the student body simmers with anger and resentment and deal with massive cuts in classes and instructor layoffs.”

“I have written Dr. Wood two emails about his poor choice of words and characterizations. Like the author of this great article, zero response. The thrust of my comments was to please act "presidential" - Dr. Wood has a doctorate and the head of a prestigious 30,000+ student university. Please act like it! As a graduate,
I'm embarrassed for myself and the university. (BTW, the least expensive ticket to men's basketball is $32. After 56 years of attending, I'm done. Way too expensive).”

“Good questions and comments. I have a degree from Sac State but I am not proud of what it has become in sports or academics. In the past they used some local talent but now it is something different altogether.
Right now for football it looks like they have given up against the league they think they are too good to play in.”

“
Time for Wood to go, and time for Sac State to reevaluate whether football is even worth it in the current collegiate sports landscape. Of course, campus administration may be left with no alternative but to drop it altogether. That might be the best thing for the vast majority of students who have little interest in sports, as well as those student athletes who have seen their sports sacrificed to the altar of the football gods.”

“
Wood’s behavior and judgment demeans his position. Instead of the unrelenting focus on sports he should be working to ensure a top rate academic program for ALL Sac State students. Time for him to go.”
