Even though he's my fantasy QB it couldn't happen to a better team.

Anything that makes the Cowboys and their fans suffer ='s me being happy! I will never respect or like any team in any sport self proclaimed "America's Team". The only team deserving of that are our olympic teams.

Actually it isn't a "self proclaimed" nickname. Bob Ryan, the Vice President and Editor-in-Chief for NFL Films, coined the phrase in 1979.
"I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television." -Bob Ryan

A few weeks back the NFL Network had short feature on how this came about? I found it interesting that another team was originally offered this nickname/monicker. I cannot remember the team, but either Greenbay or Pittsburgh come to mind. The owner told them that they did not want to be called it and felt it was not right and somewhat disrespectful. I wish I was doing more than channel surfing to recall the complete story. Either way that owner was 100% correct in my opinion.

If any other team had been called "America's Team", I would hate them the same. I despise the Cowboys more than any team in all levels in all sports. As far as I am concerned they are America's most hated team.

If Cowboy fans do not like someone not liking their team, sorry. We are all entitled to our opinions, and I will respectfully agree to hate the Dallas Cowboys. If Jerry Jones or Cowboy Nation want my respect I want to hear publicly something like "we no longer want to be called America's team, but will be happy to be anyone's team of choice."

After all what is any more "American" about the Cowboys than any other team?

If they want to be accurate why not just say "Texas's Team" ?

That wouldn't be accurate either based on your argument because Houston IS in Texas isn't it?

Come to think of it, I hate the Houston Texans now!!!!! What gives them the right to call themselves the Texans??? There are more teams in Texas than just Houston.....you are so right. What is more "Texan" about Houston than any other team?

No no no. Lou, first you have to hate them for a reason that is partially erroneous (self-proclaimed). This could be problematic with the Texans becuase, presumably, the organization chose the name "Texans". But if it was by popular vote, etc., you got it!

Then, when called out for hating them for their self proclaimation which did not take place, you have to disregard that fact completely, and hate them becuase they did not object to being called the Texans. Additionally, you must back up your premise by asserting that Olympic teams (or in this case, Texas all-star teams) are the only teams entitled to the monniker.

I am very familiar with this process. I recently went through it with the Vandals: They did not choose to be called the Vandals; a reporter gave them the nickname. I overlooked this fact at the outset, but later determined that it did not matter. When they did not object to being called the Vandals, they became disrespectful to all teams comprised entirely of people who have been convicted of vandalism across this great land.

Don't even get me started on the Tennessee Volunteers. What makes them any more a part of the "Volunteer State" than any other team in that state? I think we shouldn't let any team in Tennessee be called the nickname of the state. That nickname should be reserved for people who play touch football in the back of soup kitchens. Or it should at least be limited to them and people who play in a bowling league after reading to old folks ealier that day...FOR FREE MIND YOU!

Also, "America's Team" as applied to only USA Olympic teams would still be problematic. What of all the teams from countries in North, Central, and South America? What makes our Olympic team more generally american than Panama's? They are from Central America...

This is a complex problem, and I thank mtgrizrule for bringing it up because we have to do something as good Central-North-Americans-residing-in-one-of-said-portion-of-America's-United-States.

One thing we can expect come basketball season is ZAG trolls ruining threads and being smart asses. Bot you can :stfu: :troll:

Touche, good man, Touche. Although, while we did indeed continue the thread in a different direction, let me reming you, mtgrizrule, that you were the one who brought up the "America's Team" topic in a "Romo Injury" thread.

The Cowboys are saying that Romo is IN this week.

The news isn't so good for punter Mat McBriar, who's foot was broken on that blocked punt at Arizona. That's GREAT news for me, though, as I would replace him AND Romo with the immortal Danny White. But that's just me. ;)

I'd replace Danny White with Danny Tanner from Full House. But that's just me. ;)

I gotta go with Lou on this one. It looks like DT/corey brown can take a hit (unlike Danny White).
