Rob Ash

Might be the best statement in Schmidt's pod: Rob Ash has more wins than any MSU coach, three Big Sky Conference championships, but was fired because he was 2-7 against the Griz.
I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Hike Glacier, but he is right on this…I don’t think his (Ash) winning percentage was much different than our current version of Hauck 2.0…was it?
But Ash couldn’t beat the Griz , so he then became TOAST to the Bobcat faithful, and I’m sure if ASH was still coach he’d win his fair share of games. Just like Bobby and Staff do now….

G0 GRIZ!!

That was certainly one factor but not the sole reason he was fired. MSU's high water mark for defense under Ash was in 2012. I think that was the year Schreibeis won the Buck. The defense got a little shittier every year, and by 2015 we were praying the other team would foul up third down and not elect to go for it on fourth down.

After Ash was let go and the discussion became who we wanted for a head coach, I would have been happy with any DC who could get a stop on 4th and 15, and at the time I was being mostly sincere and only partially sarcastic. That's how bad the defense was. That DC, Jamie Marshall, never got another job at the FCS level. He had to drop to DII to get a job after MSU, and now he's coaching high school.

So, yeah. Ash tanked his own career for a guy who ended up doing it all on his own anyways.

I have a relative who would invoke Ash's all-time win record as support for keeping him, to which I responded if Ash only won a single game every year going forward he would still be the all-time winningest MSU coach.

What was Rob Ash's record the year he was fired ?

He was 5-6, 3-5 Big Sky in 2015. That's kinda different than 13-2, isn't it. ?

The pressure is on and hopefully Coach Hauck will realize sooner rather than later now after losing to MSU twice in a month that Coach Rocky Long, his boss at San Diego State, and our own great Coach Ken Baer's 3-3-5 ain't getting it done and convert over to either the 4-3-4, with which we won 2 national championships, or the more modern 4-2-5 with two 280-300 lb DT's ( Ramos and Bailey ) for 2026. !!!

If we do that, we are going to have a great 2026 that hopefully ends in a big W in Nashville !!!

Thought they probably had similar overall winning percentages while at state, and MONTANA!….but of course I was wrong 😑Kem..

Still Montana can do better..
First order of business is should be Devoloping the best Montana kids first and foremost..out of high school…That includes going back to re-establishing and cultivating and encouraging local area high school coaches and the best kids in the second largest city and everywhere else in the state for that matter..to GO GRIZ! Secondly, Montana needs to seriously recruit an area where they can find some of those John Deere-type Mid-West Built Snowplows up front capable of handling the cold FCS Climate..capable of road-grating come November and December..
A kid that will prosper in Missoula.

Wisconsin has ONE D1 school
Minnesota has ONE D1 school
Nebraska has ONE D1 school

These states have millions of people, harsh winter climates, and kids who like to play in the snow..Hockey Gillman though not a lineman knows what it takes…We need more of those kids..A kid who knows that playing shirts and skins when there’s still snow on the ground and is hanging around 30 degrees but hey the sun came out a little so we’ll see you guys down on the court… and bring in the new kid from Mott, N.D. Shit he doesn’t mind it one effing bit… Neither does our best running back…the kid from Cokkato..
This is where NDSU goes for the extra beef ..
🥩..No reason why the Griz couldn’t have success in the Midwest as well..+ might stop the top gifted recruits from hitting the portal…because their girlfriend lives back home where he grew up and him misses hims surfboard..🏄 🌴And girlfriend👙😎
North to NW swell 6 ft @18 seconds…and offshore and consistent..

Bobby has to be one of the most … if not thee most competitive person I’ve ever met.
He’s also shown me to be one of thee most stubborn people I’ve ever met as well. I wish him and the Griz , and the Griz faithful the best.

🎄Snowplow em GRIZ!

The best offensive lineman the Griz had over my 4 years at UM was from Chandler Arizona.

With how bad we've been on 3rd/4th and Long over the last few years I've definitely been at this point for awhile now, if giving up an 87 yard TD on 3rd and 20 won't wake them up then nothing will.

Minnesota now has 2 D1 schools. Don’t forget about St. Thomas. They have been pretty impressive during their transition up from D2. Don’t be surprised if St. Thomas becomes a regular in the FCS playoffs.

Yes, and great GRIZ DT's Gubs originally from Cali, Brian Toone from Butte, and GRIZ great OL Scrafford from Billings, Szalay and McFarland from Kalispell, Horn and Proctor from WA, and Gragg from Oregon.

The Rob Ash era ultimately fell apart because the defense couldn’t keep up. The offense was plenty good and there were talented individual defenders, but the defensive staff (DC Jamie Marahall) never really evolved schematically. We lived in Cover 4, didn’t adjust to modern offenses, and got burned way too often in big games.

Ash did win a lot of games and 3 BSC titles, but you could see, in real time, the game passing him by. And toward the end he tried to mask the schematic deficiencies with bringing in more and more transfers. Looking back MSU probably waited a year or two too long to let him go.

Our AD at the time, Peter Fields, was also a terrible leader who was holding the university/department back.

Thank God for Waded Cruzado.

Waded was golden…Great Hire!
Meanwhile….
Me and my Montana Buds are down at UCDavis sitting at a table at the Montana tent/ pre game gathering..Back then when Engstrom was President..So sitting with one of my Buddies from SAC, fellow Sentinel Grads and a Stanford /Sentinel Grad lawyer…Engstrom walks up to our table to say”Hi “ Friend says “Who are you?” Engstrom replies…”I’m THE PRESIDENT…” Stanford Grad replies…
“President of what?”
Engstrom…then kinda just waddled off to the parents from South Dakota who’s kid played DB..
🤣..

Agreed..
Yep, Keep your eye on the Tommies..
They know what I’m talking about..
Plenty of room in that area for a few more FCS programs I believe..

We need to be able to get one or two yards running the ball no matter what down it is…
Witnessed too many first downs Gillman getting 8 or nine yards only to fail getting 2 more yards trying to get a first down running the ball. I got into it with one of my buddies who said … “but look how much the GRIZ average per rush over 5 yards “ or whatever…then I acknowledged that but then mentioned how the Griz struggled to rush successfully for first downs on short on 2nd and 3rd and don’t get the first down…
At that point he got all butt hurt..😢

ash's record vs hauck 2.0's. note that he had a better overall and conference winning % than hauck does. did he have some bad seasons? sure, but then again, so did hauck. as previously noted, ash also won the bsc outright once, and tied for first twice.

In his second stint at Montana (2018-present), Bobby Hauck's record is
58-24 overall with a 32-16 Big Sky record through 2024, while Rob Ash's time at Montana State (2007-2015) yielded a 49-23 conference record (68.1% win rate) within his tenure, making him one of the top Big Sky coaches by winning percentage during his era.
