road game blues

First I want to say I fall on the sugarcoater side of egriz. Glass half full, always on the Griz side of things. However after last Saturdays loss I just am not up for this weekends game. Maybe because The game is on the road and well we know how that goes, or because it is ewu and they are pretty damn good. I don't get it after the Poly loss I thought no biggie team played well and was on to the next one.
I need a griz intervention lol. I normally spend all week checking egriz reading up on opponents and can't wait to watch the Griz take on EWU. I thought the Griz would be 8-3 and they are on track to do that but it feels like a hollow 8-3. I'm sure by noon Saturday Ill be pumped for the game but damn the NAU loss took the wind from my sails. ok back to regular scheduled programming.

I'm with you man. You know... There's still some good football on TV on Saturday. Big Green's homecoming game vs. the Crimson. Looks like a hell of a matchup. Some real defense vs. some offense. On about the same time and if the mood lightens, maybe you could take in some Griz football.

I know and can appreciate the feeling, Mav. I'm struggling with that feeling of apathy a little as well, and on top of that, I've come down with a serious case of the crud that has me feeling like shit and no doubt would kill a lesser man.

That said, keep the faith. I believe the GRIZ match up much better against ewooooo than against NAU. If we can get after Gabrud, we have an excellent chance to win. Also, the intangibles are better: much easier travel; no altitude; a much better start time, a large number of GRIZ fans in attendance. Bottle it, shake with ice, enjoy!

I'm definitely "In Tune" with this response Everett. Well, with all of it except the crud part of course !! :(

I am totally fired up the EWU game. A big challenge and perfect time/game for the Griz to redeem themselves. The NAU was an unfortunate and disappointing loss, but, with the Griz making a half dozen more or better plays on both sides of the ball, UM would have won. It just isn't true that the Griz were horrible or they sucked, or that BG was horrible or sucked. Sure, they didn't play well, but a lot of the problem was the lack of making enough big plays, and making too many key mistakes, along with some smaller goof ups.

EWU will be a tough opponent, but I think the Griz O should be able to move the ball and score, and the D should be able to make enough stops. We will see how the team responds. I just can't see them not responding well. The Griz O and D must have had good game plans last year. I assume they will this year too. While I don't know, I assume we'll see McGee. Hope so. I give the Griz a good chance of getting the job done.

P.S. I truly don't understand why Griz fans wouldn't be excited about this game. This is part of what sport is about. Rebounding from adversity and failure. Rising to a big challenge. I think our guys have the heart and ability to do this.

And if the bear wouldn't have stopped to sh** he would have caught the rabbit. Some games come down to one or maybe two key plays that sway the outcome...... but to say half a dozen? From my chair it looked like you guys pretty much got dominated. My buddy (Griz fan) and I were watching from a bar stool and when NAU was up 45 to 20... you could just see Jerome go conservative and take his foot off the gas because the outcome was decided. Had thay wanted to just stick with the game plan at that point it likely would have been 52 to 20 or even more lopsided. Regarding EWU, I'm not saying it's impossible - but you guys just don't win there and I think they're significantly more talented than you.

I get excited for every game and always will. Do I think the Griz will beat EWU? Nope. But I'm excited for it regardless. Just as I'm sure MSU fans will be excited for the Brawl without any hope of winning.

And FTR, Poorgriz, EWU has exactly four players that are more talented than anyone on the Griz team. The QB and three WR's. Are they the difference? Yup, most likely. But after that, I'm sorry but EWU's whole team is not more talented than UM's team. EWU doesn't have one single defensive player that's even in the ballpark of Caleb Kidder. Not even close.

I think you missed the point. I didn't say the Griz should or could have won, or didn't get clobbered. I said they missed making, or played poorly, on a half dozen or so plays on both sides of the ball. I think the Griz have more talent and are better than NAU, even though NAU took it to the Griz and deserved the win. But, with the Griz being a good team and needing only to clean up that few plays and mistakes, that type of clean up and recovery is doable, in my view.

I don't agree that NAU could have beaten UM worse.

Certainly don't agree that UM got "dominated". Got clobbered but not dominated. Look at the stats:

First downs (UM to NAU) - 24 to 20
Total offense - 542 - 406
Average gain per play - 6.3 to 5.6
Turnovers - 2 to 1
3d down conversions - 5 of 16 - 2 of 15
Red zone scoring - 5-5 - 5-6 (NAU got more TD's) - UM should have gotten more TD's, and this is one of the things I'm talking about (when Calhoun gets tripped up running for TD, UM ended up with only 3, I believe)
Points off TO's 6 - 14 (Griz need to not turnover on short part of field)

I see no domination in these stats, yet NAU owned the scoreboard.
TOP - 31 to 29

EWU doesn't have anyone as talented as JR Nelson in the secondary either, in my view. Great cover guy and player.

4th down conversions:

UM: 0 for 4
NAU: 2 for 3

I think that's what doomed us in this game more than anything.

Looking back at the 4 turnovers on downs NAU scored 2 TDs, missed a fieldgoal, and had a punt. That's 14 points.

One could also look at points NAU got when then started with the ball in Montana territory, 24 points. That's brutal.

-----

Is what it is, that game is done though. Griz did put up good numbers, just have to limit the mistakes shown against NAU and this game will be one hell of a great matchup
