"I saw a lot of good things out of our quarterbacks and receivers, and a lot of good things out of our cornerbacks and safeties, and our linebackers too," Delaney said. "There's some good stuff all the way around - we just cannot be complacent and think we're there after just one day by any stretch."

Is it just me, or W.T.F.???

I'm with you bro. Is that seriously the best he could come up with? Kind of a moronic statement for the first day of practice.

Settle down guys, it was day 1. Lots of positives and lots of stuff to build on. We've got a lot of younger guys that are going to push anyone that gets too complacent. It's could be one of the more athletic teams we've had.

Always the voice of reason. I appreciate what you bring to this forum. I hope our playbook is a good one this year. JJ did really well with the read game we used in 2011 but now we are using a more pro style I think. That worries me a bit.

More pro style yes, but not all pro style. Look back to spring camp, there was zone read, pistol, and shotgun that used play-action. It seems to me this system compliments JJ well and even though it has him running a little less that's probably not the worst thing. He's a great passer and a good scrambler, less designed run plays for him will keep him healthier through the season.

CV, just curious, what did you expect? That the Griz should be ready to play App. State on Wednesday night? And After one effin practice they don't need to improve anymore??? Even the true frosh should be ready to go even though they only saw a playbook this morning???? Your post was the real WTF in this thread@!!!

Okay, maybe I am wrong. Just thought a little more "sense if urgency" might be nice.

Well, unless the Griz are practicing in the Adam's Center with the doors locked, there should be no reason not to have a practice report. Get your ass up to the "M" with your binoculars Wahlberg. Jesus, wtf are we paying you for?

Why in the hell would anyone be surprised by that quote? Did you guys honestly think he magically became a good head coach during the off season? What did he do, read a book? Friendly advice here but you guys need to lower your expectations waaaaaaay down. I've heard from a few Butte folks that know him... And while is a hell of a good guy and an excellent mentor for the kids, he has proven time and time again that he couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag! He's out of his element. What on God's green earth makes you think he has the ability to lead a championship cabiber D1 football team? Some of you guys are so blind to what is happening. It's staggering. That quote sums up how lost he is.

Just seems to me that:

a) he's a life-long position coach in just his second year as head coach, he's got a career losing record as a head coach....there shouldn't be a complacent bone in his body.
b) last year's Griz team went 5-6, the first losing season in 25+ years. They return 19 starters and are BUILT for a deep run into the playoffs. Compacency had better not even be in their fucking vocabulary.
c) It just seems like such an odd word to use on the first day of practice. I mean, did he think he saw some people out there who DID think they were "there" after one day?

CV, I completely disagree. "Urgency" doesn't get you anywhere. It's preparation that counts. You should read Johnny Wooden's book, "Wooden." The minute you start worrying about wins and losses you are screwed. Fundamentals, boy, fundamentals. Oh, that and lighting up the scoreboard like a pinball machine.

Well, thank Gawd he didn't say something stupid like this:

“The ball was on the ground a little,” he said. “We tried snapping the ball on difference counts and that messes everybody up. But I thought in general things went well.

I think the Griz fan base has SomE faith in MD. He is all we got and don't have any say in any of it. But... you have to think about it. We were in every single game last season and held the lead at one point or another. Our QB was Very inexperienced and even admitted that the game moved to fast for him. Our biggest loss was only by 10 points. Between the bad QB playing, dropped passes, and turnovers... things are on a different path right now. Our O-line is a brick wall, we've got massive depth in the RB sector, along with a few FBS drop downs including a big fast WR that can catch, the D is out for blood, Waggs, and Tripp are gonna make a huge impact on any O that they're facing, and most importantly, we've got and experienced QB back in the game. There was lack of leadership last year but things are restored once again.
Yes, MD can take the blame for a rough season in 2012 but when the team suffers the loss of their team leader (compass as Tripp called him) you're lost. I believe this team is gonna rise up and surprise everyone. Me included.

MISSOULA - The University of Montana football team is back at work, and is ready to put all the distractions behind them.

The program doesn't have to fear an NCAA investigation anymore, and their quarterback is back under center - not in a courtroom.

You can't predict success from the first practice of the season. But first impressions can go a long way, and head coach Mick Delaney likes what he sees.

"You look at what our kids have done, every single one of them have gained anywhere - depending on the position - from eight to 27 pounds. Our strength numbers are way up. So you know, those things indicate you are getting better."

"We had a really successful summer program. [We] worked hard. A lot of guys stayed here. We're really happy with what we did as a team during the summer. We're coming in with a lot of confidence. But we're still coming in with a chip on our shoulder from last year. And we're ready to get to work," offensive lineman Danny Kistler observed.

Last year marked the first losing season for the Grizzlies since 1985, and it follows these players and coaches around wherever they go. Although there is plenty of reason to believe they will bounce back this fall, the questions will always be present until they provide the answers.

"I think anybody would be lieing if you say we don't talk about it or think about it. It's something that has kind of lit a fire underneath us this year. But at the same time, we're always looking forward," Kistler told us.

"The effort on focus all winter long have been on, you know, we've got to finish, we've got to play four quarters...so yeah, there's a whole different outlook on coming off a season like last year and going into this season," Delaney adde

Huh. The last time I heard that was in 2011. In fact, I believe that statement is still rattling around a few former kittie DBs after getting TRUCKED and RUN OVER for 387 rushing yards.

Yeah, we're scared.

Much better. I can't wait to watch a pissed of Kistler steamroll opposing defensive linemen.

It appears the quote got butchered in the gogriz.com write up. Here is how the quote played out in the Missoulian:

“There’s some good stuff all the way around,” said Delaney, whose team was listed at No. 22 in the first Football Championship Subdivision coaches’ poll released Tuesday. “But we can’t be complacent and think we’re there after one day by any stretch.”

“... Like I told the guys afterwards, it was probably like an 8-4 practice, which is OK but not good enough. I thought our energy was pretty darn good. I thought our mental, you know our attention was pretty darn good ... It’s an 8-4 practice but nobody is happy with an 8-4 (record). We’ve got to get better.”

http://missoulian.com/sports/colleg...cle_58f27aba-ff0f-11e2-ae1a-001a4bcf887a.html

This quote makes a lot more sense. Give the old man a break. ;)

People who think Johnson will struggle in a more conventional offense because he is a spread-option QB will be pleasantly surprised. He's not a small, quick QB who struggles making plays with his arm. The dude's an unbelievable passer - accurate, strong, smart, and deadly when the play breaks down. Doesn't matter what offense we run, the kid will make plays.

I was wondering about that but haven't read the entire article yet. It sounded close but something wasn't registering.

I agree, in part; this primarily because after a year off just how fast can JJ get back into shape for the upcoming season. Initially, I wouldn't suspect he'll be as top notch as he was during the latter part of the 2011 campaign, but after a month or so he might just be back to that level.
:D
