Reno Rookie: Can I get some advice?

Yes. Take this year, for instance. A tourney hosted in Missoula would, by the second round of games, likely eclipse Reno's total for each of the past two years.

I think as a 1 bid conference, you absolutely HAVE to reward the best regular season team with the tourney to help the cause of the best team making it in. Now, we know it's not always the case, but still helpful. The ACC it isn't BSC. I think their thought is to create a "fan experience" not just games to see. Only place to do that is Vegas or Phoenix. It's warm, you can fly there easily from just about anywhere, and lots of things to entertain you as a fan during down time. If not one of those, it's gotta be the regular season champ.
I was thinking about going to Reno this year, but will absolutely be in Boise next year since I live nearby. Still, hope this is the last round of this crap and goes back to champ hosting.

exactly. neutral sites are a great idea, and a great time for a lot of conferences. particularly those power conferences already getting 5, 6, 7, or 8 teams in the dance. this is not the big sky obviously. or I guess obvious to some...

reno is an awful idea for so many reasons. but the biggest reason of all in my opinion is the best team all year long in a low to mid-major conference should get to host. it just makes sense.

though, when you host, there's always the chance that you'll blow a 20 point lead to your in-state rival and have to watch them play in the championship on your home court and muster all the strength you have not to puke in your mouth a little. there's that...

Any chance you could refresh those of us on the play by play...and full game details...of said game?

The backboard is still shaking.....part of the reason for poor shooting at "The Brick"

Honestly from a Marketing standpoint...the BSC makes 0 sense. I don't know how you could ever be this naive from a business perspective. Seriously...hire any marketing company to do consult and it would be obvious to them that this does not make any sense. They turn down approx. 10k seat sales a year by having the tourney in Reno. Not to mention another 5-7k of seats for the womens tourney. Not to mention there is 0 student support at the games for any team. The games on TV and online are lack luster and often feel like they are missing any atmosphere. Teams come out flat, playing in front of nobody on a wide open dead arena. I went to the last 3-4 tourneys in Missoula and took time off to watch all the games. I went to Weber. It's night and day difference in feel and atmosphere. Not to mention...the point is to represent the BigSky well and create a marketing opportunity nation wide. So whats better for marketing?
Situation 1: 1 National TV game...with nobody in the area and less emotion, with one of the top 4-5 teams in the league advancing to the NCAA Tourney with a 14-15 seed and less than 5% chance to advance.
Situation 2: 1 National TV game with drawing a few thousand at most games and a full house for all the home teams games. most likely packed stands for the TV game and a crazy atmosphere for TV. one of the top 3 teams advancing and a high chance the conf. champion moves on to the NCAA Tourney. Anywhere from a 12-15 seed depending on who wins but a much higher chance of the best team moving on.
The situations dont even compare. Yes its hard to get a ticket to missoula short notice...which is why the schools were complaining....but then we went to this...everyone goes to reno BS and so they all can make travel plans anyway. The only downside would be if Sac or someone won it one year and we played in a HS gym...but even thats going to be better attended than reno or boise. Why stretch thin a conference that is already stretched as thin as possible because we only get 1 bid.

IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE AND I HAVE NOT HEARD A GOOD ARGUMENT FOR RENO OR BOISE YET

The only argument that I have heard that makes any sense is the flight/lodging logistical nightmare when one school wins both the men's and women's regular season title and hosts both at essentially the same time. But that does not outweigh watching a title game on ESPN2 attended by 7026 (last title game not in Reno) vs 2025 (last year in Reno).

The argument against is Suck St’s gym. If they were to host, it would look worse than Reno. Seriously, there are at least 2, possibly 3, grade school gyms in Butte that would be a better host than Suck St, depending on how many folding chairs can fit on the stage.
Thus, your scenario #2 really only applies to 2 schools. For the other 10, you need to make up a scenario #3, which is likely better than Reno for some (home) games, but about the same for the rest

Well, the league had already advised psu and sac that they couldn't host in their on-campus facilities. You may recall a few years back that psu won the regular title and the tournament was held at the Rose Garden. Sac supposedly had another location lined up as well, but then forgot to reserve the year they nearly won it, and by then the venue had booked a flower show, so they were talking about playing it in their yoga studio.

But the conference already had contingencies in place for the really shitty gyms.

Let's be clear: with all the lip service, this move was made for one reason: $$$$$$

I'll bet that the move to Reno was made so that administrators and spouses would have some free booze and entertainment all week. More fun to shop, dine, party, and see shows in Reno than Missoula. Now that this didn't pan out, they are headed to Boise. What is missing is a tournament experience for the players - playing in front of 150 people is a joke. But, when the tournament was in Missoula, not many people attended any of the games that didn't involve UM.

you know whats messed up. this whole...move to reno or neutral site thing was put in place so universities and fans could fly to the one location cheaper than flying to missoula or ogden or similar every year.

This is false. It had zero to do with the fans, it was to make it cheaper for the member institutions.

Why don't they go with the prior year champ hosts the next year?

That is the hose job the BSC did to softball a couple of weeks ago. Announced in late January of this year that last years regular season conference champs (Weber) will host this years conference tournament. Basically 9 months after the last game was played and they give it to the regular season champs, Weber, vs. the tournament champions, the Griz!!!

Why are we in this shit conference, can someone please explain that????

I believe that until the Big Sky went to the neutral location for the tourney, the Big Sky was the only one that didn't hold their conference tourney at a neutral site. I would like to see the top 4 seeds protected more somehow because they've earned it through the season.

FYI: these conferences have tournaments at campus sites...most at reg season champ but some just at higher seed schools left over after earlier games----American East;Atlantic Sun;Big South;Mid-American;Northeast;Patriot;. Granted all smaller conferences but a couple on equal terms with BSC, and all with 1 team going to dance----get it right, drop the tourney to 6 teams, top two with byes in first round and always at regular season champs campus! The hell with Reno or Boise!

I know I cannot, 84. It’s a question I’ve been asking for years.

Because there's nowhere else to go.

Easy answer for now, 68. The issue is that eventually there will be a place to go. And I’m concerned there are still too many “we’re only little Montana we’re wayyyy too small to go to a real conference” types. That’s why I constantly promote this issue. Because when the door does open, it won’t stay open long, and we better be willing to push our way in. Otherwise, we’ll watch someone like Seattle University shove us aside.

Bingo..Article on espn that Gonzaga has been asked to join the MWC...along with 6!.?.. other schools. Go for it...call the commish! Sell it , upgrade football and great for hoops...and every other sport! Now is the time...

Here is my advice;
1. When gambling don't have too much cash, nor carry an ATM card on you.
2. Don't drink toooooo much.
3. Yell like hell for the Grizzlies.

Those first two take 2/3 of the fun out of the trip specially since they sell alcohol at the games.
