Engineering becoming a hot major.. Law not so much

With the rate tuition prices are increasing, its becoming more difficult to justify a liberal arts education (this coming from a guy with a liberal arts degree).

High school kids hearing the jobs in engineering, tech, etc. Bozeman is that ticket right now

Delaney tells Fritz Neighbor that both are still employed however they're taking time to consider their options.

The MSU Registrar's office says their 2012 fall enrollment increased a little over 500 students from 2011. From 14,153 to 14,660...a net 1,200 differential between the Cruzado led Bozeman campus (+) and Engstrom's (-) Missoula campus.

We can only hope the BOR with dollar signs for eyes is watching...
Dont forget the $500 stipend for new freshman enrolling at Msu. The school in Bozeman has raised enough research money, some of that $100 million a year can pay for salaries. The difference now goes to lure students to msu.

Engineering is not the hot major in Bozeman, by the way.

What does that even mean? Isnt this prime recruiting time?

So reading between the lines, both are on the outs.

23% of all incoming freshman declared engineering as their major. It was the number one choice

I think it means both are gone and not helping in recruiting. But it also means they were not fired contrary to what someone posted earlier...

you are splitting hairs....

Not really. Pretty sure getting fired is getting fired..Delaney said both are still employed by UM...

until their current contract is up, so pretty much the same thing. If they were actually part of the future, they would be involved, and they are not.

So whats the deal with baker? I thought he was a big time coach/recruiter.

What gave you that idea? I believe he came to UM as a coach from a high school in Arizona.

he is a good recruiter and a good coach....i'd need to see an example of somebody on here calling him
"big time" though..pretty sure i've never seen anyone refer to him as that. the deal is, he's looking at other jobs. pretty sure most assistant coaches do that. no shocker there...

It's interesting to wonder if Coach X jumped or was pushed, but taken in context with whether UM will even have a viable D-1 athletic program in 2, 5 or 10 years, it seems a lot like fixating on an isolated battle when the whole damned war which we're losing is really what's at issue? :|

Maybe "big time" was a poor choice, however, I think someone we know referred to him as a "hell of a WR's coach" :thumb:

Letters and sciences is where they end up, Poke. Not engineering. The change happens fairly quickly for most.

The paper reported today that the Athletic Dept must cut $150,000 from its budget because of a 700 student over projection by the Administration. Delaney removed two coaches from staff since the Griz/Bobcat game - Burtnett and Baker - they will not be helping us recruit through the end of the contracts but we will be paying them until the end of January. I figure that move just cost the department about $20,000 and the lost benefit of their recruiting skills. Engstrom fired O'Day and Pflugrad but we are continuing to pay them as well - I can't even guess how much that is but I'm sure it's more than twice the amount the department must cut. Since Engstrom has cost the program and community economy much more than $150,000, I think we should just call it good and let the dept. maintain the buildings before we run them into the ground as well.
Perhaps they will trim the staff responsible for the lame pregame entertainment, its painfully obvious they haven't worked a day since 2003:shock:

They already fired rocky the balloon bear. Who would you cut next?

This is happening because dumb ass Engstrom gave Delaney two years instead of one. If we would have started the search for a permanent head coach for 2013 during last season, he would have been on board by now, and would have his assistants lined up already for next year. There is nothing positive to be gained from having a lame duck head coach next season, and a depleted staff, or the ones left around spending their time trying to get out.
