I have a bad feeling that this is just the beginning...

The next four months might really suck for us. :(

Four months? I'm worried about the next four years!

I hope they won't get so bad that we'll be looking at the highlights of the last four months.

My naive self has to ask what would be the primary reasons for such a huge drop in enrollment? the perception the university is unsafe? Did admission requirements change? Did the media blitz give such a noticable negative spin that kids didn't want to come here? It seems clear that Royce Engstrom is in way over his head and hasn't the necessary skills to bring this ship around. 700 students is a lot and it doesn't seem to fit the cyclical reasons. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Especially with msu having record number of kids. 700 kids times say 8000 per year x 4 years= 5,600,000x4= 22,400,000.00 over the 4 years of lost freshman. Course that does not include room and board but still........... I guess it assumes all 700 would have been incoming freshman. This is a disaster!!

Shalon Baker is still a Griz coach.

However I had heard rumor as well that Burtnett is gone, just left, no big surprise as he was coming here to help Pflu and wind down his coaching career.

Do you think the safety play during the North Dakota game expedited his move out?

We are beginning to sink into deep ca ca. There doesn't seem to be any leadership to put together a plan to begin to pull us out of this mess. Schweitzer is the only one I can think of that has the brains and the balls to give UM the necessary help in leadership, however, he is beginning to think of time on the lake....well deserved, by the way. This university must start a positive action plan for the athletic department and get us moving forward again. Finally, a loss of 700 students is a disaster. Does Engstrom have a plan to eliminate further erosion?

The same Schweitzer wearing his Bobcat clothes/colors at the Griz-Cat game? Same Schweitzer that put Pat Williams on the BOR? :?:

The same. Not the answer.

Declining enrollment seems to be every where but not at this level

Does anyone else have that "sinking" feeling that things are going to get worse in "Griz Nation" before they get better?

Not just there but throughout the season. I have a hunch that he might've been asked to leave at request of the other D coaches.

The MSU Registrar's office says their 2012 fall enrollment increased a little over 500 students from 2011. From 14,153 to 14,660...a net 1,200 differential between the Cruzado led Bozeman campus (+) and Engstrom's (-) Missoula campus.

We can only hope the BOR with dollar signs for eyes is watching...

When the enrollment decline came up at the reagents meeting before the griz-cat game, the decline was explained as the state of Montana's student population hitting a plateau. Because the discussion was about the university system as a whole and not about any one school in particular, the fact that nearly all of the decline took place at one school in a single semester was ignored.
No one suggested that Engstrom totally phuked up the public relations on the um rapeapalooza. NO one mentioned that um is now hiring a press flak at the vice presidential level---this while they cut spending for things like research, and athletics and budget analysis to fill it's 5.7 million dollar enrollment hole.---which Royce missed by 300 students.

Engineering becoming a hot major.. Law not so much

With the rate tuition prices are increasing, its becoming more difficult to justify a liberal arts education (this coming from a guy with a liberal arts degree).

Somewhere in the neighborhood of a 5% drop in enrollment. You don't suppose the Lee Newspaper chains constant drumming of the massive rape problem in Missoula, especially the UM, might have something to do with it, do you? Missoula businesses will feel the draw down. Business owners have to ask themselves just what is the Missoulian is doing, and assess the impact this "reporting" had done to or for their bottom line. The Missoulian is just another business affected by public perception, right or wrong. The question, business owners, is what are you prepared to do?
