inarguably, one of the best talent evaluators in the nba is jerry west. and with all the freshman stars in this year's class--wiggins, parker, gordon, embiid, et. al--the consensus is, this is a great draft. not to jerry west's thinking.
"Just look at the league, this is the weakest I’ve ever seen this league. We are depending on people who go to school for a year to come in and change the sports as a franchise, rarely does that ever happen. And everyone is talking about a great draft class this year, I think it’s just the opposite, I think it’s a poor one myself. These franchises have really struggled. At one time you can get a branded name, these kids are not branded." he added, it would take most of these kids three or four years to figure it out in the nba.
so why shouldn't that be true of college freshmen as well? sure, there a few that can step right in and help a team--jamar and cherry top that list. but the rest? i say, a redshirt year for most players would be tremendously helpful for a mid-major like montana that's not going to get the blue chippers. a consistent strategy of having two fifth-year seniors on the court each year would pay great dividends for us in my humble opinion. cases in point:
--brandon gfeller. great potential. has he contributed that much this year? would our record be better without him? put another way, have his contributions this year equalled what he could have done as a fifth-year senior?
--jack lopez. ditto.
historically, brian qvale's freshman year was a foul-plauged, injury-riddled waste compared to what he would have contributed as a fifth-year senior. derek selvig, who did redshirt, was much more valuable as a senior than he would have been as a true freshman.
this is so self-evident, i just don't see why our coaching staff doesn't get it. c'mon guys. what am i missing here? your opinions are welcomed, but just remember: i've now got jerry west on my side.
