redshirt policy--again

inarguably, one of the best talent evaluators in the nba is jerry west. and with all the freshman stars in this year's class--wiggins, parker, gordon, embiid, et. al--the consensus is, this is a great draft. not to jerry west's thinking.

"Just look at the league, this is the weakest I’ve ever seen this league. We are depending on people who go to school for a year to come in and change the sports as a franchise, rarely does that ever happen. And everyone is talking about a great draft class this year, I think it’s just the opposite, I think it’s a poor one myself. These franchises have really struggled. At one time you can get a branded name, these kids are not branded." he added, it would take most of these kids three or four years to figure it out in the nba.

so why shouldn't that be true of college freshmen as well? sure, there a few that can step right in and help a team--jamar and cherry top that list. but the rest? i say, a redshirt year for most players would be tremendously helpful for a mid-major like montana that's not going to get the blue chippers. a consistent strategy of having two fifth-year seniors on the court each year would pay great dividends for us in my humble opinion. cases in point:

--brandon gfeller. great potential. has he contributed that much this year? would our record be better without him? put another way, have his contributions this year equalled what he could have done as a fifth-year senior?

--jack lopez. ditto.

historically, brian qvale's freshman year was a foul-plauged, injury-riddled waste compared to what he would have contributed as a fifth-year senior. derek selvig, who did redshirt, was much more valuable as a senior than he would have been as a true freshman.

this is so self-evident, i just don't see why our coaching staff doesn't get it. c'mon guys. what am i missing here? your opinions are welcomed, but just remember: i've now got jerry west on my side.

We get some of these players...infact I know the reason we got obe of the guys you mentioned..because we told them they would contribute right away. With brunig out this year.. and Bradshaw not til the spring. We had no choice. We needed players able to rotate in..without gfeller and lopez. We would be playing who at the start of the year? Emerson?

Lets break this down

Redshirt or out: muller, brunig,Bradshaw til December
Starters:.jamar, Hutch, Desheilds, Gregory, wiesner
Backup forwards: Martin, Kemp
Backup guards: Lopez, gfeller, Emerson, Dunn, young
If you redshift Lopez.and gfeller your left with 3 replacements for 3 starters. That doesn't work. We already only have two replacement fwds and so we have to play small ball a TON. We couldn't make all our players play that much. Plus Emerson nor young have shown they can play advanced minutes. I think Emerson will in time get better but he's already a rs soph.

Once again you are beating a drum without being privy to the decisions a coach has to make.

1. the kid has to be willing to redshirt
2. a coach is going to play the players that he believes help now
3. coaching is a win now job, because there might not be a win later opportunity
4. a coach wants to plan for the future, but it is not as important as the present

I get so tired of your hindsight whining about Qvale and other people. The coaches make the decisions based on what they think is best, not on what Citay will think 5-6 years later. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but it is the cost of doing business.

The late departure by Jake Wiley surely had some impact on who Tinkle decided not to redshirt.

I agree with this. However there was zero way we could redshift anyone else this year

the despicability of redshirts and praise for the feared ss sharpshooters.

i'll go back to the football board.

I could see Lopez redshirt, but Gfeller surprised me with his athleticism. He is a pretty good defender and was more ready for the college game from a physical standpoint than I expected. Just because he didn't contribute much offensively doesn't mean he wasn't valuable elsewhere. Love his hustle. There is a reason he has been starting of late.

If I remember correctly, 18-year-old Wayne Tinkle redshirted when he came to Missoula. So I believe that he understands the pros and cons of the first year redshirt. Many kids can benefit, but it is not a scientific process and can potentially sour an out-of-state recruit.

He started one game and that was because deshields was being punished. At the Nau game they claimed he was going to start on the tv broadcast but he did not start deshields did. Gfeller won't start until two years from now at earliest. There is just no place for him YET. But there will be, he's a good player and has good instincts. He needs a faster shot release though.
