I think MSU has much more effective overall student recruting program. They had record enrollments. I feel that was a large part of the difference and not as much from the krap that went on last year in Missoula. I would have thought that UM would have stepped up their advertising,PR, and recruting program last year to offset what happened.
I have to agree with this. My son is a senior and listed both UM and MSU to receive results from his ACT test, and despite his sister currently attending UM we get about 3 things in the mail from MSU for every one from UM...they seem to be pushing harder right now.
And they're spending 4 times as much to recruit students. That's great, but there's an opportunity cost, and Waded is starting to hear about it from her faculty. When you take money from programs to recruit more students who then enter programs with less funding, eventually something has to give.
In five years we'll be talking about how much greater UM's freshmen enrollment is. Happens every few years.
Could be too that the majors like engineering are more popular these days. The funding problem is more from a drop off in grant money from budget cuts and the sequester. Based on past posters on here with kids looking at both schools, MSU has been more on top of it. Again, with the bad publicity at UM the last couple of years, you would think UM would have made a big effort to boost its PR. Appears to be a leadership problem.
