RB Iverson Young enters Transfer Portal

I'm guessing Gillman says adios at the end of the season

I'd be surprised... He knows UM gave him a chance and he loves Missoula. But in this day and age, who knows

There are seven million things wrong with the scenario that led to Iverson Young to put his name into the portal and maybe two or three of them deal with Iverson directly.

You have a signing period that is next week, an active transfer portal during the season, NIL offers being dished out to players through intermediaries before they've hit the portal, and no real oversight by the NCAA to much of it anymore. None of that is or should be laid at the feet of Iverson. He's free to take advantage of a system that demands, if he is going to transfer and have scholarship money thrown his way to do so at the beginning of the portal period because it falls before the first signing day. He's gotta transfer if he's decided Missoula isn't a good fit NOW and not three weeks from now. That was Sammy Akem's point on twitter and I completely agree.

The system is broken and it is going to require some significant restructuring and I just don't think the NCAA is going to be up to the task. This scenario isn't Young's fault wholly and I wish him only the best.

Well it seems you may have some insider info here? Either way I’m disgusted by what the NCAA has done to us. Sammy is Griz through and through love that dude.

The NCAA will find a way to be up to the task ... once they figure out how they can tap into all that juicy dough floating around.

From the start, I wondered why the powers-that-be (NCAA, conferences, and schools) didn't seem to be interested in snagging some of the NIL money. My guess is that they didn't think it would turn out to be such a big deal. Now that millions are being thrown around, I have to believe that the NCAA (etc.) will be looking to carve out a piece for themselves.

Kind of odd timing. Middle of the playoffs. People could go down with injury and you could get called into action on ESPN2 with a chance to display your skills in an actual CFB game, and THEN you could enter the portal afterward. It's not like he can go anywhere and play right now. I don't care why he left, because that's none of my business. But it makes me wonder if it's like one of those situations where people "leave" a job months before they actually leave.

EDIT: Had this typed out before I read G24's post above. His post makes sense. I do, however, think that the decision could have been made quite a while back.

I think the way he sees it is that if he waits and the Griz go to the national championship, he risks not finding a team before the spring enrollment deadline and would have to wait until summer or fall camp to join his next team.

Edit: Crap, just saw your edit lol

He'll be fine wherever he ends up. Too bad he's going to miss out on the playoff ride. He might regret that 20-30 years down the road.

All due respect to Iverson, but I highly doubt he’s transferring because of money.

UM was his best offer. He basically didn’t play this year. Why would another school pay for him? Most likely he just didn’t fit here. It happens.

I don't in this situation, wasn't inferring that someone offered some hefty amounts of NIL money to Iverson to get him to transfer out. I honestly have no clue as to what his motivations are, but if I inferred otherwise that is my fault.

The NCAA didn't do this to us, but rather it was a system that was grossly unbalanced towards schools and against players to begin with. Been around football programs to know full well that I'll take this system no matter how dysfunctional it is than what we used to have. The NCAA was wholly unprepared for this moment even though they saw this coming with the O'Bannon lawsuit and did absolutely nothing other than let institutions create policies on the fly without any real sense as to what the consequences were. They were rudderless for three years while the transfer system and the NIL expanded to such an extent they can't effectively regulate it at this point. Thus the suggestion by new NCAA presidents of creating foundations/endowments for player compensation that could create more oversight than they can currently with the NIL cooperatives in the power 4 conferences.

Not sure if it was quite a while, given we're both native westerners and that has a specific connotation. Living in Chicago as I have for the last thirty years, I think he's known for a couple two/tree weeks. I read somewhere on here that he wasn't at last week's game. That X is back with a vengeance sort of leads me to believe they have been shuffling things for a while.

With all due respect, the why doesn't matter.

There was a good article on CNN about the President's of the SEC, ACC, BIG 10 and BIG 12 testifying before some Congressional Committee about the problems with college sports and NIL. I tried reposting it here, but failed. Good read. The ship be sinking.

This NIL sh*t has absolutely ruined college sports for all but the well heeled schools. Commitment is just a word. Nowadays you get all the character you can afford.

Ok boomer

I don't think the thought of NIL is bad, but the implementation is a giant dumpster fire.

Bummer it didn't work out here, I'm sure he's got a bigger/brighter future in the next steps ahead for him and I wish him all the best!

Griz fans - let's try not to sh*t on a kid for making this decision without knowing the reasoning/purpose behind it please.

Just mentioned on Twitter - for some reason I can’t get tweets to populate correctly in this post.

X links don't work, so don't use the copy link share option. just copy the actual url the post has in your address bar (which is fairly easy thing to be fixed by the mods to get it to work)
https://twitter.com/IversonYoung1/status/1732100061717463129

Is God pro transfer portal?

That’s what I was wondering. Did God enter the portal too?
Fuck! Why now? Couldn’t god have waited at least until after the playoffs?!? So selfish

If he doesn't want to be here that's awesome he's leaving. He will find out the hard way that he won't be a top pick for any top schools looking. The grass isn't always greener on the other side, but these kids will learn the hard way. He was a 3 star RB, not a 5 star. There are a ton of rbs better than him and have college film to show. And I'm not worried because we got a beast from the best school in Hawaii named Fonoti coming to Montana next year.

Maybe he was not as good in practice as his star rating. Maybe he was homesick and wanted to be close to home. Maybe the cold that was continuous was more than he could stand. It is different than it is for an official visit. Regardless of his reasons, just respect it. If he did not see himself being here anymore then it is good that he moved on.

As far as the timing, he really didn't have a choice. He was not part of the postseason plans and the portal opened and is open for 30 days. If and I mean if we do get to Frisco, then the window has closed for him until the spring.

Let him live his life and make his decisions and move on.
