I mean, we could stop bringing them up, but I'd still say they are a fair example. Can we stop bringing up a school that was loaded with 4 and 5 star talent at every position as the example?
I enjoy the chaos of the 3-3-5 and when we had the right pieces at NT, CB, DE and S with a solid LB crew it was fun to watch especially with Bradfords tweaks to Baers chaos. It destroyed lesser teams but always had problems against the few elite programs. Unfortunately the speed and execution is much less in ‘24 and ‘25 than what it was previously.
The biggest problem against big valley teams or MSU is that you have so much pressure on the second level that it is easy to get creased with good OL moving up to the second level and it always seems to have an issue with backside contain due to how you have to flow. It happens over and over again and the stats in those games against the elites prove that.
We get better dudes than most other programs we compete against, so let’s let them be dudes, cover gaps and force teams to beat the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s.
If the stubbornness to stick with the 3-3-5 remains then we need some athletic beef along the defensive line. I’m tired of watching 245 lb DE and 260-280 lb tackles get moved 2-3 yards off the ball when we need a stop. Watch that final drive from the brawl 1.0 this year over and over. If you can stomach that for 60 minutes at a time you don’t know what you’re watching.
Even if we knock them out, though, ISU just utilized it to do everything needed to get a win. In the recent history of the Griz, the 3-3-5 has definitely shut down a Touchdown Tommy led MSU and NDSU and SDSU in the playoffs. If every team running the 3-3-5 was failing, I would agree with you. But 2 of the top 3 teams in the FCS this year ran the 3-3-5. So it actually is a defensed used by the "elite" and to beat the "elite." ISU knocked off the vaunted NDSU team ranked #1, don't forget.
With that said, I would agree with you in your second part. Either way, the Griz need more strength up front. I agree with that, and they could use just more overall size to them, too. But I don't think that has anything to do with a 3 or 4 man front.
Either way, hope you are well buddy.
