Quick scrimmage write up

Immediately after the scrimmage, the Griz had some really large tubs of water and dumped lots of bags of ice in them outside, right behind the west side of Wa Griz. That will take care of the aches and pains. (Hope Van jumped in with his "sore knee")

- Maybe the best play of the scrimmage was JJ picking up a 3rd and 10 to Marq Rogers. Jordy put it just a little high and in a tight window, Rogers goes up, gets it, takes a brutal shot from Whitted and hangs on. He's making the most of what he's been given, this guy keeps impressing me.

I felt he would be a standout ever since signing day, I'm glad he's living up to my expectations.

He's going to be factor in his very first semester on campus.

Sounds like Geddes could have used the tub of ice cold water worse after a morning of watching Jamal...

Just saying...

Good write-up BW. Just a couple corrections....Van's knee was not wrapped but it was his calf and he had a slight limp. I sat on the front row right behind the offense. Also, at least one snap that JJ lost was quite high. Lots of crossing patterns on pass plays was a good sign...hope they use all of the field this year. One of JJ's great attributes is finding the open receiver even when the middle of the field is clogged up with bodies. Whitted was playing safety long with Hermanson with the 1s most of the time, is Bo Tully injured?

The only time SSH should be on the playing field is when he runs across it coming out of the tunnel.

I agree. Give the young guys the reps. because Gustafson worries me. Two scrimmages and two picks. He has to clean that up at this level. One was picked by a freshman ( who will be awesome by the way).
Johnson's pick was just as bad as Gustafson's today...why aren't you bad mouthing him too? I think today was just the D's day.

I'll cone to the defense of Shay here. This system is different than the last 3 years, the need for a mobile QB is greatly reduced. Shay is fairly smart in the pocket and makes good throws for the most part. Going back to more of a pro style system Shay stands tall and scans the field better than McKinney, Gustafson, or Simis. I still have concerns with his slower throwing motion but that's improved over last year. He's a smart guy and has adapted to the system pretty well.

Thanks, that's probably good if its a calf over a knee. I thought I saw Tully on the sideline and not in pads b wasnt sure.t

Minor correction. Even Van is saying it's his knee.

I could see this offense suiting him better but I'm still not convinced he can play quarterback at this level with any success.

Haven't heard much about Tyrone Holmes in either the practice or scrimmage write-ups. How's he looking? I expect big things from him this year.

I am not badmouthing the kid. I said he needs more reps. I am sure he wil do great with experience, but he is competing against three other guys for the most important job on the Field. The fact is he threw two picks in two scrimmages and that is not going to get it done. If you are related or a family friend - I recommend you thicken your skin if you are going to be on this board. JJ getting picked does not make me do cartwheels and maybe it was the D's day. JJ did not get picked the first scrim. A matter of fact he looked ridiculously on target. To. Compare him and Gustafson at this point is ridiculous.

No...not really. I isolated on Tripp before the pick he had vs J.J. ( because all I saw of him before that was pushing Counts into the wall after he was out of bounds) #37 lined up at "mike" on that play. He took his deep read steps to his right, then opened his hips and fluently got excellent depth to the LEFT after J.J. rotated clockwise. It was a solid pass , but #37 pulled the ball down at the highest point. A non typical play for a BSC "backer". He could've scored also, but elected to shut it down at the 10 and not possibly cause harm to himself or a fellow Griz. I like Gus but on his "oskie", (int.) he made a pre snap decision where he was going and stuck to it with Tucker Schye rotating into the zone....ufda  :egriz:

Ya I see the newspaper said it was Van's knee but wondered if it was his words. It looks to me like he took a helmet to that area (upper calf) which could have been the knee area too. I doubt he will be out long but App State should plan on him not playing...easier for them to game plan that way.

I root for SSH like the rest of the players on the team, but there is no way he should be in the top 3 on the depth chart...seriously question MD's competency on that one.

I was pleasantly surprised by the kickers, after the doomsday stuff I have read here. Lider better be noterizing his checks..
I would NOT want to be the decision maker in 12 days on who goes out to make field goal attempts... sleepless nights for sure. :egriz:

I didn't make the scrimmage because of a previous obligation, but I was pleasantly suprised when I heard about Tripp's "athletic" interception. Tripp is obviously very athletic, that is not what suprised me. What was nice to hear is that he got a great drop, read the routes that were developing and the QB-s eyes, and then anticipated and made a play on the ball BEFORE IT GOT THE RECIEVER (all things that need improvement from our backers over last seasons pass defense from them). That is just frigin AWESOME to hear!

What you saw on the field was in no way the actual official depth chart, as MD switched/inter-mingled the players between units...I seriously doubt your competency as a fan on that one.

Marq Rogers looked great! I know it was only one catch, but that one over the middle was great! Only a freshman! I know it's not fair, but Joey Counts reminds me of Chase Reynolds (blasphemy). He's a tough runner and he could break some tackles this year for some big runs. We could have a three headed monster with Canada, Van, and Counts! Jamal Wilson looks great as a lead blocker. Hope they use him as a screen pass option. This offense will be more wide open than the scrimmage showed. There's no way-with all that talent at WR, and Jordan Johnson back-that Mick will not open it up more (or he'll never be back). It seems like the defensive team speed is way beyond last year's, whether it's linebackers, defensive ends, or secondary. Other than Johnson's longs pass to Ellis Henderson early on, the pass offense did nothing (but that was because the coaches wanted to focus more on the run). Nate Harris looked stronger and bigger physically, and was on Henderson for one long pass. WHEN the defense gets some rest this year because of a competent offense, look out BSC! So excited about this year :thumb: !
