I recently registered on egriz though I have been a forum follower for many years. One of my favorite aspects of the forums for me is they are a sanctuary from the toxic political climate we are daily bombarded with. I hope it remains an anomaly for political opinions to sneak into forum submissions as happened in this one. I too am very strongly opinionated politically but I don’t want my opinions to be judgmental in a place I can go to relish the comradely of exchanging thoughts with a community of Griz fans. By the way, I find it hard to fathom the Griz losing to PSU this year.

I can understand some reluctance to spend money in Portland (it has changed a lot in the 36 years I have lived in Oregon). Spend it in Hillsboro where the Vikings now play -- which I can guarantee is not Portland. Lots of nice hotels and some decent pubs in the area, none of the public displays of divisive politics from either side, and no homeless encampments. Not the urban experience but the urban experience is becoming highly overrated.

I had heard that the homeless situation had gotten worse in Portland, but only recently read just how bad it had become. Since this thing seems to have legs, I thought I’d pitch in some actual downtown Portland quotes. (Yes, it is from Fox News -- which I know some people hate -- but they aren’t making up the material … it’s confirmed in bits and pieces in local TV programs.)

Shannon, who has grown up in the city, works at a bagel shop on the edge of Chinatown and says while she feels for those suffering on the street, sometimes it's easier to look away.
"I put blinders on a lot. … Like tunnel vision. I choose not to acknowledge it."

Michael Kirby, manager of the quirky gift shop Boys Fort, estimates his store has taken a 15 percent hit in sales.
"I have had people literally running into my store saying 'I do not feel safe' and that's the thing that flipped my switch. … Portland needs to fix this."
Earlier this year, Kirby said a homeless drug addict "shot up" outside his store.
"He had a needle in his arm and was passed out," he said. "What could we do? We literally cannot do anything as business owners."
Kirby said calls to officials haven't led to many improvements.

Dana Highfill, owner of Float North, a flotation therapy center in northeast Portland, told Fox News her store has been vandalized in the past year. There have also been multiple occasions where she's had to clean up human feces and pick up dirty needles. Like Kirby, Highfill says the situation is getting worse and hurting sales.
"It's definitely an enormous problem," she said. "It's a terrible thing for someone from out of town to see. It's not a good face for the city."

That last bit, where they can only hope it doesn't get worse is particularly sad.

What’s funny man is people that live outside of Portland refer to it as the “State of Portland “ as they do there own thing. I work in Building Codes and even in the local government community they are the State of Portland as they have there own amendments to the state building code. They do there own thing man. Let’s see what the State of Portland does....

That said I hope the Griz can get it done. Hillsboro stadium has treated the Griz right in the past. Weather is supposed to hold up so that’s a plus. Turn up strong Griz nations.. MONTANA...

I lived in Oregon 10 years. My wife is from Astoria. Never have I heard Portland referred to as the "State of Portland". News to me.

We should win, but this is a vulnerable road team.

Please explain. They’ve played 4 road games, 2 of which they have won, 1 of which was against a ranked team, although an obviously overrated team. They’ve lost 2 against a highly ranked FBS team and a highly ranked FCS team. Calling them “vulnerable” against an unranked bottom dwelling team that would have a losing record if they hadn’t played down is just dumb.

The play in this game is evidence. A win is a win, but it was hard to get it. The teams we play love to play us, and it makes their season if they win. It would have been all us at home.
