Just home from the game, thanks to heavy to snowfall on the way home.
Anyway, this GRIZ team is proving the importance of consistently great defense. The 1st half, both teams were all out of sort (could that be from too many whistles?). The adversity the GRIZ went through last season and early this season is paying them back two fold. Anymore, they know they are capable of playing through anything, against any kind of style, and always take PRIDE in defense and hustle.
It seems like, every opponent struggles with turnovers and getting good high percentage shots against the GRIZ defense. The GRIZ defense absolutely strangles offenses and put both feet down on the throat while strangling them. They are a machine on defense. Speaking of defense, PSU's pressure did nothing against the GRIZ. The GRIZ only had 10 turnovers for the game, with 6 of them in the 1st 10 minutes. They handled the pressure with ease. The GRIZ were much better against their defense than in the 1st game. It is a huge plus to have the likes of Rorie, Oguine, Falls, and Pridgett that can routinely beat the press with great ball handling and passing. The stutter step, change of pace Pridgett did at 3/4 court was a thing of beauty, that led to a lay in that was just as beautiful. Pridgett is so damn smooth with the ball.
To take it a step further, Espe looked pretty comfortable beating the pressure too. I have a feeling, he will do just fine, when he is expected to play rotational minutes. He is a nice point guard too. He just was not as ready as Falls and Nicholas were as Freshman.
As for PSU, it looks like their style of play has really caught up to them, as the season has worn on. Granted, they play most their players. Unfortunately, their depth is not the quality it needs to be, to consistently play that style. It looked to me that their players are physically worn out. They are not even close to the quality of team we saw a month ago. Yes, I feel they are capable of beating anyone. I also feel, they don't have the depth to win more than 2 games in the conference tournament. An upgrade in facilities would help attract the talent they need to play that style. For what it is worth, I actually like their coach too. I just don't know if he will ever have the depth to be a consistent conference contender, at PSU.
With all that said, I don't want to see PSU early in the conference tournament. The highlight of the night for me, had to be Oguine's steal and dunk. I cannot wait to see that dunk when I watch the game on demand. Great game GRIZ!!! Keep the focus and special things can happen for this year's GRIZ!!!!
