The “woke” people at the U are arguing if “CottonEye-Joe” isn’t PC. Cancel culture rears it’s small minded head. Heard from a reliable source.

Yep it is because they suddenly believe the phrase cotton eyed is a black person with very light blue eyes and the contrast of dark skin tone around white eyeballs in black people and hence forth "racist". Basically the continued woke movement of trying to relate everything remotely related to southern culture as inherently racist. I see that traditionally the phrase Cotton Eyed actually usually referred to someone whose eyes were milky white from bacterial infections of trachoma or syphilis, cataracts or glaucoma. The black person thing is something new made up by woke culture to feel offended by something so who knows.

Yep, those crazy fuckers will latch on to just about any crazy conspiracy theory.

Well, what does it mean? I've looked at a dozen articles and that explanation is in just about every one.

I come to see the football game. I truly do not care if I see Monte, what songs are played, if the concessions closed or any of the other things people are bitching about. And, it was a damned good game ... and the Griz won. All the rest is just unnecessary decoration.

Interesting comments. But no 'that was awesome,' or 'wow! now I've experienced the real thing.' I noticed the cannon shooters were in poor form, like most of the other failures noted. But, they only had six TDs to get it right. Used to be just a matter of getting anyone out of the way, then BOOM! Seems they couldn't get it right until the PAT. Maybe it was just muted by the audio guys at SWX.

As some have stated, they only had two years to plan this. Time to plan and implement electronic tickets and the virtual program. Maybe they actually had virtual concessions, but 'marketing' just didn't have the time to inform everyone. Marketing failure from the vaunted College of Business who rolls out grads and diplomas like they come off a roll. Marketing failure from the pride of UMs operations should be impossible.

The Beer Garden appears to have been successful, at least in distracting from the other areas UM failed at pulling off. The old 'Keep 'em drunk and happy' ploy. :thumb:

If I knew Bodnar was giving a speech, I definitely would have come. And those 20th Anniversaries happen regularly, you know, every 20 years. Start planning now, Seth.

Griz gameday was a product of years of experience, and was a source of pride. To see it fail like this is deeply disturbing. Marketing joins the Alumni Dept. who failed in the Homecoming Parade debacle. And still no explanation that anyone could believe.
Well with that ray of sunshine....

Personally, I go to the games to see the game, not the pregame, so I never even noticed the rust taken so seriously. Pregame is the time it takes us to get from the tailgate to our seats. It was a wonderful night.

Yeah, I didn't notice any of the purported pre-game issues, or even that none of the tired old songs were played.

But the game was great.

What I DID notice, however, was that it seemed to take quite a long time for the lights to have any effect.....the game seemed to be being played in a dimly lit warehouse for about the middle two quarters.

Well said. If high production pre game values are needed a quick trip to a theme park is in the works. I enjoy the old school approach.

Hi all,

I am the Director of the Grizzly Marching Band and I've been following this thread this weekend. I am always looking for ways to improve the band's presence in the game day atmosphere so I am interested in the perceptions of what fans see.

In fact, a number of years ago, I used comments on this board to improve our location on the field when the team runs out. Someone had commented that the team was nearly into the padding before they were able to make the corner. It was an excellent observation and we immediately changed to the curved lines to give the team a better pathway.

You are correct that some things were a little different at this game. I don't know the reasons for all of the changes but I can tell you that a full season off, some personnel changes and "first game of the year" may account for most of it. I think there was also an effort to minimize long periods of waiting for the next thing to happen and keep momentum building until kickoff. It appears there is still some tweaking to be done.

The reason for my post is to pose a question. This is not the first time that criticisms have been aired and I am curious to know what kinds of things would help to create an enjoyable, exciting pregame? Some traditions are probably gone forever, such as the Silvertip Skydivers, as a result of the accident a number of years ago. What improvements could we be exploring?

Thanks for your input!

The band was fine (albeit it seemed small in comparison to years past?)....there just didn't seem to be much energy in the stadium prior to kickoff. Even the 37 flag raising was somewhat anticlimactic.

You are correct, we are a little smaller than 2 years ago. The problems of COVID has hit us hard and I am in a rebuilding year. We ran the band last year to fulfill degree requirements for some music majors, but it's not the same without the "payoff" of game day. I'll get it back to full strength but it will take me some time to get new students involved.

It's also weird (through no fault of your own) that when the band is facing away from one side or the other, all you can hear is the drums. My seats are NEZ, and when the band faced the West side, I literally couldn't hear anything but the drumbeat. you'd think in THAT stadium it wouldn't be a problem....but it apparently is.
