Potentail ambush game....

Something to chew on:

"It should also be noted that Ferris, as dominant as it is, doesn’t often square off with DI opponents. The last time they did they clashed with one of the best teams to ever grace an FCS field with the 2013 North Dakota State unit led by Carson Wentz. The Bison, expectedly, won that game in a rout 56-10."

 Good grief...the 2023 Griz are not anywhere near the UNSDSU bison led by wentz....and at the time they were not the consensus #1 preseason and 2-time defending champs out of their bracket.
Griz showed NDSU and Wentz were beatable.

But, not when it counted Kem. You know this...

Wow. Elrod in at Griz -23. That's a dream bet right there.

Guarantee Vegas is not -23 at game time. But, maybe Elrod is our new ace-in-the-hole!

I have absolutely no doubt you are right that Vegas will not do that. Like I said, maybe you hit the nail on the head and I am too full of sunshine and rainbows about this team. But I am excited about them, and I see the logic in my head for us having a MUCH better season this year even if the defense takes a small step back.

But, hey, I'm saying it publicly so that I am on record and you can commence the mockery if I turn out to be wrong.

It's all good. I too am excited for the season.

You absolutely did read it correctly. Maybe I am really am too much sunshine and rainbows, but I haven't been this excited about our offense in a few years. I think we come out strong. But maybe I have my head up my ass. We will see! I'm thinking it is somewhere in the range of 30-7.

As for the discussion about salary, ZipRecruiter lists the average head coach salary in Montana at $42,000 a year. I don't know how much that is worth, but its what turned up there.

Elrod how much you want put on that spread? I’ll take any amount you’re willing to wager…

I said that was what I thought the score would be, not the minimum point spread. But my expectation is that we will win by at least 20. I'd put $100 on that.

In this sort of game, you have to get them down early and never let them think they have any chance at all. If you let them stick around, they can come back and bite you in the butt.

On paper, you should win this thing easily. On the field, these guys will be eager to prove themselves. It really is a no win situation for the Griz. You're expected to win. If you do, so what? If you don't, oh what?

It also makes the number of D1 wins needed harder to get.

Hahahahahahahahaha!!! Oh those bubs. Never change.

That Cat poster is a total idiot, as I have said. Someone wondered if he's a teenager. I'm wonder that too. The Mods should get rid of him to save his own self-esteem.

Michigan has a population of 10 million people. 750 HS’s play FB. We have 5 Div 1 teams U of M, MSU, Eastern, Western and Central. N Carolina has 10 million people (I would assume they have a similar number of HS teams) They have 14 Div 1 teams some are FCS. The closest FCS team to Michigan is Youngstown.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has 11 Div II teams probably 9 that play football. Some are in Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

For several years when Brian Kelly (Notre Dame) was at Grand Valley (GV) they ruled the roost in the GLIAC. They have an enrollment of 30+ K and Div 1 facilities. Ferris (enrollment 20K) has been on fire recently but their facilities are a couple steps behind Frenchtown. They put a lot of money in their Div I hockey program, but they take a back seat to GV. However that’s changing quickly. They are talking advantage of the FB teams successes.

When you look at the numbers comparing NC to MI, Michigan has about 125 Div I freshman scholarships every year. NC has about 350 freshman scholarships every year. I would say most of those MI schools have 50% instate freshman every year. They still go down South or out East looking for Unicorns. Michigan’s D I teams leave a lot of talented kids without a team. Their only option if they want to stay close to home is the GLIAC. Say what you want about D II teams but those coaches are brilliant when it comes to getting kids scholarship money. I believe D II teams have 35 scholarships and they can split them a bunch of ways. I’m sure they all have a coach on the staff who’s job is to find a scholarship for a left handed, redhead in the Welding program. Those guys chase down money all over the place. I’d be willing to bet most if not all of their two deep athletes are getting something.

When PJ Fleck was at Western he came out and said “all their recruiting would be within 200 miles of Kalamazoo”. Keep in mind that includes Chicago, Indianapolis Detroit, Grand Rapids, Gary and more. That appealed to kids and their parents because they could drive to see the kid play. When he took over at Minnesota he said the same thing. Minnesota has ONE Div 1 team. Before he got there half the Gophers were from TX, FL. GA etc. Minnesota has about 300 Div III teams. Every Saint known to man has a Div III college in MN. That’s why NDSU was cleaning up in MN. The kids could be close to home, (Fargo is 150 miles from Minni-no-place) play in great facilities and get a scholarship. Watch what happens to NDSU in the next few years. Fleck wants to own Minnesota. NDSU still has a draw in MN but I predict there won’t be a lot of Bison NFL picks with a MN hometowns in the near future.

A lot of the D I talent in Michigan ends up at the out of state MAC schools. IE: Toledo, Bowling Green and Ball State are right across the border. I didn’t mean to imply that Ferris has a bunch of dummies. They do have several academic programs that are easier to slide a tweener into. Ferris is looking at a big upgrade in facilities and a win in Missoula would really help that cause.

Many made this point about the salary, and I will again admit I was wrong. I googled, and it was wrong. I should have looked for a better source. I went with confirmation bias. That was my bad. 100%. Their coach makes WAY more than I had said. No excuses. I was just flat wrong.

I will say, though, you are cherry picking with Texas coaches salary. There are NAIA coaches in Montana not making six figures. Texas is a special beast of football coaching. You can't compare that to anywhere other than the deep southeast in terms of competition, and even that is a stress. There is a reason that they make movies and TV shows about "Texas Football."

You're right that they have starters that would be on our two deep. I don't disagree. I believe, though, that our two deep would start at nearly every position for them.

I'm sure they will repeat as DII champs. Good for them. All power to them. And they will put players in the NFL. DII players can do that. But sometimes great NFL players are not the same as great college players, for a lot of reasons. Heck, the greatest Griz QB of all time never did it in the NFL, and I wouldn't trade him and his MT career for anyone.

As for the rest of that, don't put me on a schtick. I can admit plenty of faults, just not the ones some folks throw out that don't make sense. ;)

I can't imagine any NAIA coach in MT makes $100,000, but I don't know.

D-II teams can have very good players, but almost never have a full team (starters) of very good players. Of course, they can produce some NFL players. I can't imagine that many of the many Ferris players who supposedly signed NFL contracts, made the NFL. However, I'd be happy to learn that I'm wrong.

Even a handful of their players starting for UM, doesn't make them a winning team.

UM got caught flat-footed and let transitioning NDSU come from behind and beat us by 1. Obviously, the Bison were a team on the rise.

If Ferris is really very good, and they obviously have been good, they could give the Griz a game if the Griz aren't ready, or if the Griz aren't as good as most of us thing they will be.

I'm good with the game. I applaud Haslam for scheduling it. If the Griz get beat, I am going to call for Haslam's head. Joke.

I will miss the game. Will be watching the New Zealand All-Blacks take on Namibia in Toulouse France in the Rugby World Cup.

Article about Ferris dudes in the NFL. Quite a few...

I agree that we will win this game, but different class of athletes? I don’t think so.

Well, the beauty of this is that we will see in just a couple of months! But yea, I think there will be a visually significant difference in size and speed between the two teams. That alone doesn't assure a win, but I think the difference between DII and a good FCS team is a lot larger than people realize. Ferris is a great DII team, but I wouldn't pick them to make the playoffs in the FCS.

A difference in size??? I guess so, since Ferris has 18 kids bigger than 300 lbs. on their roster, and we have 5. Not sure how much speed or talent they will have, but they will be the bigger team on the field as far as weight goes.

Potentially 18 kids who, if they are played, will be out of gas by halftime.

I’m betting Ferris will be equal to the Griz in speed and talent, especially speed.

I'll take that bet. Absolutely. I'll bet you $100 and a 20 point win is a push. Anything less i win, anything more, you win.

Cool, I'm in. If you are coming up for the game and I lose, I'll even man up and hand over the cash in person with hat in hand.

Should be a fun bet!

Is especially equal more equal than just regular old equal?
