Post Game: Too many mistakes

I'm happier with this team and staff after game two that I anticipated I would have been thinking about this season six months ago. Gonna be a good season if everyone stays healthy. Last night was a bummer but I'm not devastated about it. We didn't execute and we got beat by a good team. That is all.
The Griz were ahead. Cal Poly was out of time and had to make a very long kick. They were forced to roll the dice, and fortunately for them, the dice rolled the right way on a long bet. Consider that, at that point, Cal Poly had possession nearly twice as long as the Griz, and yet the Griz were ahead.

The O line did a great job protecting Gus. No holding penalties and one or two sacks on almost 70 passing plays is a terrific job. But unless they get stronger and better at blocking the run, the Grizzlies are going to struggle running between the tackles with a stable of small backs. Inability to run it in the middle of the field was a major factor in last night's loss.

This is going to be a process this year, we'll have good games on offense and we'll have more challenging games as well. As long as the team identifies and improves on errors and miscues they'll only get better. I think this goes for coach Stitt as well who is adapting himself to presumably better opposing coaches, more talented and sophisticated defenses, and better overall skill in opponents.

I saw on Twitter from a CPSLO blogger who I've talked with before that Poly's coaches talked to the CSU Pueblo coaches on how to slow down Stitt's offense. Found that pretty interesting if true.

This bye week is just what the team needed, they go into it pissed off and focused on improvement. How they respond in two weeks at Liberty will give us a real good glimpse at the fire and passion they have. I have a good feeling that the Griz are going to be just fine and will use this loss to their advantage.
Nice post Brint. I agree, this season is going to be a roller coaster ride. It's going to be a work in progress, but I'm excited because I think this team is going to improve over the course of the season.

I keep saying, new coaching staff, new QB, new offense and a darn tough schedule means this isn't going to be the undefeated season that some fans are expecting.

I have been very pleased with the defense so far. The offense obviously has some wrinkles to be ironed out...let's see how they look in November!

Tough loss but them Griz played hard. Too many passes behind the line of scrimmage when kind of early we could tell Brady was throwing a little high. Thank god they were all forward passes. I liked the play calling except for the pass behind the line of scrimmage when we were on our own end zone. D played tough. D ENDS YOU PLAYED A HELLUVA GAME! Brady when you have to run and it's close brother attack them sons a b_th_s! Hold that ball tight and get low. Crittenden thanks for the hustle. # 9 Sanders? Some great open field tackles on Qb Brown mirrored his steps and made the hit! Go Griz! It's off to Liberty! Let's go Gustafson throw them TD's! You're living the Grizzly dream take it to them! Go Griz!

Got to give kudos to CP kicker. Game winning Long field goal in the rain was Very Impressive!

What is so funny to me is that so many Griz fans thought that hiring Stitt with his "fly-sweep" offense was a magic bullet to success. We have seen the fly sweep once, for negative yards. The rest of his offense is no big deal. It is a pass-read offense which many college teams utilize, either totally or partially. But the fly sweep made Stitt a legend in their minds.

Bottom line is this, if this offense was so freakin' miraculous, every college team would use it. Ultimately, every offense can be stopped, and games are usually won by defense and special teams play. I rank offense third among the three in importance.

Its a lot like Mike Leach's "Air Raid" offense, PSU defended that pretty well yesterday :thumb:

PSU did not look awesome, Wazzu's offense was sub-optimal, and their receivers were not good...

I will say again . . . what most people are thinking! AtlGriz is a f@$#ing troll. Easy to point out what went wrong. But, assuming that a Division 1 coaching staff won't make any adjustments to fix at least a couple off these GLARING shortcomings is just plain agenda driven garbage by a douchbag that is just typing words for the sake of making noise! :? Good trolling, but is is getting old. People are starting to tune you out.

You can hang this loss on failed execution, mostly on the offense, too many errors that sunk the Griz into too much of a hole. I think our defense did a great job throughout the evening, one missed containment and one pretty well thrown pass otherwise our defense did as much as it could have been asked to do.

Lets review the issues:

- Last week in scoring on 4th down conversions the Griz were +10 points. This week they were -10 allowing a TD and the game-winning fieldgoal. Last week 4th down conversions paid off, this week it really didn't. Montana was 0-3 on 4th down. The most costly might've been the final failed attempt where we shifted two players (players not normally used to that position) which draws a flag - but yet we still run the play handing off to our staring outside linebacker, who is stopped short. Another frustrating 4th down turnover was an early one that hit Naccarato in the hands. A play or two later Chris Brown would be off to the endzone, untouched.

- Fieldgoal kicking. 1-2 tonight on a wide-right shot that had the power but never was lined up right, the other was a sideways wobbler that did get through but the crowd seemed pretty stunned it was good. If the missed kick was made who knows how that game shakes out, but if the final score by Poly would've held - we're talking a Griz win. However it's not fair to hang 1 missed kick on the loss, there were plenty of other missed opportunities.

- The interceptions. Luckily we got 1 back on a freak fumble and tackle. All 3 picks though came on similar types of passes - what appeared to be major over-throws with no Montana player in the nearby vicinity. Brady's pick last week was the same way - big overthrow and an easy pick.

- The drops. Oh the drops. I don't think the stat books report drops but there just way too many tonight and many coming on key 3rd down passes and one even on a 4th down pass.

- High passes. It seemed a ton of passes were thrown too high today. Many missed opportunities on overthrown balls.

------------

However this is just 1 game and even better for the Griz, it's a non-conference game. They'll learn from this and improve. We've got two weeks to rest up and get prepared for a major road test. It's not a "must win" game but it's one that would sure be great to have so we can roll into conference with some good confidence.

Additionally some other takeaways from this game:

- Our defense is good. Yeah I'm worried about DT health especially now that it seems Peevey is hurt too, but overall this defense can flat out play. KVA, Kose, and Gamboa are great linebackers. Harris and Nelson are a very good duo. And the rotation at safety is working great, Yamen, Manu, Whitted, and Johnson all had some big plays tonight. Tryone Holmes is a beast and Crittenden made such a major late play. I really like what I'm seeing out of this group. If we can get DT settled in and Kidder back this group is going to turn into something real good.

- Jamaal Jones's catch I've not yet seen a replay of but I want to. It looked pretty incredible.

- John Nguyen showing once again his best asset - that he's so tough to bring down cleanly. I still think he was robbed by not getting the TD there, that run was an incredible effort.

- Also haven't seen the replay but I think Ellis was down on that early called fumble.

- Oline again was good... not great... but much better than what a lot of posters on here feared. Luke had some earrant and wild snaps and there were some breakdowns here and there but mostly (especially in the 2nd half) Brady had decent time.

- 20 tackles for Kendrick Van Ackeren today? Wow. He was in on most plays, they went after him and with just 1 exception did not seem to have much to show for it. That 1 exception wasn't really his fault either, he had to guard both the pitch and the QB, chose the pitch and the QB ran right past him.

- 92 plays again today I believe. Shows how sometimes the turnovers and lack of 4th down success really take the wind out of the play count. Add in the amount of negative yards plays, Going by CP TFL's there were 6... seemed like a lot more.

- The defensive plan to put a hurt on Chris Johnson seemed to work pretty good. That guy was in real pain as the game went on and took some major punishment. Take away that 60 yard TD and he would've just had 80 yards tonight. Regardless he was still about 85 yards less than he had last year and was just 4-12 passing for 56 yards.

- The fly sweep tonight sure didn't work the 1 time we saw it....

-----

But lets look at it like this. Most all of us expected the Griz to be 1-1 at this point, just not in this fashion. We've now got a bye week to rest up and then hit the road. We're 0-0 in conference still, and have all the team goals still in front of them. I watched the Griz leave the field, they looked mad and upset with themselves, understandably. However I do have great confidence that they'll bounce back and that this loss will actually help this team to improve.

Alright Griz Nation, it's late and take heart - there's a lot more fun to come. Days like today are going pains of a new system. But think about it like this. After all of the turnovers and failures in execution, the Griz were right there until the end. They had a chance to win despite everything else that didn't go their way. As they work to clean things up these types of games will fade and they'll be able to come away with more wins.

Get some sleep gang, and enjoy the rest of your weekend! GO GRIZ!

Brint:
Good write up but you missed one big point IMO. Poly tried it's best to give away that game to the Griz but they just couldn't do it. Poly really should have put the game away by the middle of the 4th quarter. The Poly miscues were horrible....

- going for it on 4th and 3 from the Griz 15. Kick the FG. Jeez.....
- fielding that punt on the 2 yard line. Totally stupid.
- roughing the passer penalty that gave the Griz a fresh set of downs. Dubious call BTW but totally "boneheaded" anyway.
- the Poly DB that had the 3 INTs fumbles back the last one to the Griz. C'mon.

I respect Poly's resolve to play thru their miscues on the road an get the win but that that 4th quarter was brutal.....

On side note, giving up 330 yards on the ground is a BIG problem. The Run D for the Griz needs to be addressed. It will eventually sink them in a big game if it's not fixed....

Great points, all all valid except for your criticizing our "D" for giving up 330 yards. About 60 of them came on one play. The wishbone offense will always gain lots of yards, because they run it 90% of the time. All-in-all, our defense played very well.

Fair enough on your counter point. But you can look at another way, the Griz D knew what was coming but still gave up the yards. Plus, if NDSU hadn't gone "Mike Martz" on the Griz they'd have put up more then their 220 yards. Granted NDSU and Poly are great running teams but still.....Maybe the DT weakness is the issue. Will just have to see how it plays out.....

Take away that 60 yard TD and he would've just had 80 yards tonight. Regardless he was still about 85 yards less than he had last year and was just 4-12 passing for 56 yards.

- The fly sweep tonight sure didn't work the 1 time we saw it....

If it was that easy to stop it, no one would use it. Poly is going to get there rushing yards on everyone.

Well it could be worse. We could be Wyoming...or Washington State...or Stanford...or Nebraska...or...
