Post Game: The Griz find a way

Good summary, Brint. Liked how you pointed out so much of the good individual play.

I thought the targeting was clearly the right call, from every angle I saw. To me, that is the definition of targeting. I have no trouble with the rule being applied as it was against Cookus. He made no attempt to hit below the neck, and didn't. Helmet to helmet

I believe the Griz would have found a way to win even with Cookus not the field. I don't think he would have had the mental and physical toughness to survive the heat put on him by the D.

Tired of people thinking outcome woulda shoulda been different with BBC
Obviously, we can never know, but I tend to agree.

We watched our recording this afternoon (much less stressful, knowing the outcome). Saw some real toughness by the Griz and several things struck me ... including one in particular, which was confirmed by the stats. The Griz had 8 sacks ... plus I don't now how many hurries ... against a guy who proved to be pretty agile, elusive and quick. (They also have 11 tackles for loss.) We've only seen Cookus a few times, but he does not strike me as "Mr. Twinkle-toes." Would he have gotten rid of the ball quicker and avoided some of that? Undoubtedly ... but the Griz D still put one hell of a lot of pressure on the NAU QB and backs. Would that have been enough anyway? Who knows .. and, in the end, who cares?

Not to sound like a complete idiot here, but what does BBC stand for?

Ummmmmmm

While Brint's mind apparently went elsewhere, I'm here to tell you that it stands for Baby Bitch Cookus. We're currently in talks with the "powers to be" (Shout out to Rule) to get the acronym more recognized on Google.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar

Most threads are hitting on the Cookus ejection as a stroke of luck. IMO, you make your own luck sometimes. NAU was running a gadget play, with Cookus running a route. Since the defense didn’t get fooled and had it covered the guy with the ball had to eat it for a minimal 2 yard gain, and the intended receiver had to abandon his route and come back to block (target).

I thought it was "Bitch Boy Cookus". Either way works.

A word of caution...you may not want to Google BBC on your work computer!!! I suggest referring to the urban dictionary before officially assigning Mr. Cookus with this acronym  .

The targeting call wasn't iffy, in my opinion.

The letter of the law: No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck of an opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder.

Was it a gutsy call for the referee to make knowing it involved the most prominent player on the field at that time? Yes. But it was the correct call according to the rule as it's written.

With how quickly the flag was thrown, I don't think the referee had time to really distinguish which player it was (plus he rarely sees a qb out on the edge like that). I'm glad he was so quick, because if he had waited to think about it, he may have seen who he was about to eject...I don't know, just a thought. Correct call though.
