The Montana defense played valiantly but had a handful of errors that lead to some big pivotal plays for the opponent. Meanwhile, the Montana offense was unable to find a shred of consistency and put forth a product on the field that couldn’t score points, sustain drives, and leave the defense out to dry and they get worn down and outscored in the 2nd half.
This is 3 weeks in a row that Montana has lost and honestly there’s plenty of spots to discuss.
1. This offense lacks any sort of consistency, identity, and ability to regularly move the ball. Interestingly each of the three losses had different individual “issues”. Idaho, the offense was dead flat and full of errors. Sac, LJ gets knocked out. Weber, Brown looks like a deer in headlights and the wildcat stuff just didn’t really do much. I know there’s going to be the mass “putt in Britt!” calls – I’ve seen them on twitter, in text, and on here. I hear it on the pod. It could be what is needed, sure. But the OL giving up fast pressure on 3 and 4 man rushes and continual 3rd and longs isn’t going to work for any QB. An offense that either doesn’t design or trust Brown to throw the ball further than 10 yards isn’t going to work. An offense with less than 2 yards per carry also is a recipe for disaster. Is there a reason why we don’t send Fontes / Flowers in vertical routes? Or do we and am I just missing it? I’m not a coach, never have been, but I echo the thoughts of many on here. This staff and these players have to want solutions too.
The single biggest issue with this team is the offense is not producing like they should. This was a problem for a while last season that got corrected after a bit. Can that happen this year again? I’m not sure, where do they go from here?
The offense didn’t score in the 2nd half. That is unacceptable. It does feel like more issues are arising each week and damnit that makes this really concerning as a fan.
2. The defense again falls victim one too many times to their over-aggressive nature leading to big blown coverages. I really find myself having a hard time calling this as to “fault” here… but… two big TD plays in the game and… damn… that’s just killer in such a tight game. Last two drives of the game – Weber’s QB is saying it as I type, everyone knew they were running, but couldn’t stop them. I kind of chalk that up to the defense being gassed…
A few things I’ll add:
- Can we please keep in mind that Kris Brown has put in years of dedication into this program please? I recognize that many/most fans want a broad discussion about if it should have been him or Britt today – but please show some class to a guy that’s on our team Griz Nation.
- Malik Flowers is the best kick returner the Griz have ever had and it’s honestly hard to imagine we’ll ever see someone of his specific talent and skill again .
- The wild stuff is that in all 3 of these losses it really does feel like the Griz have beat themselves more than the other team has beat them.
Montana has to win out for the playoffs now. That starts with Cal Poly. They’ve got to stop the bleeding and get things working again asap. This team’s back is to the wall. How will they respond? I know what I can do – show up and support these guys. That’s what I plan to do, I’ll be at Wa Griz this weekend ready to cheer these guys on. Come on Griz, lets get it back in gear! Go Griz!
