Liberty is a solid FCS program. They need more size though.
As for the GRIZ, this game left me with more concerns than I was expecting. The main concerns being our passing game, and our passing defense. I absolutely love the GRIZ rushing game, run defense, OL play, and front 7 play on defense. Also the silver lining for this game, was special teams, very solid, and better than I expected. Coverage and return game was better than I expected. Lider has a much stronger leg than I was expecting for a freshman. This guy will be very good when he finds consistency to striking the ball.
Offense: I love our depth at rb. Dan Moore is by far the better impact rb. I loved the little we seen of Canada and Kirshner. Canada was running wit a purpose, and Kirshner giving the coaches reason to play him more. Again, OL play was very good. The hole Moore had on his TD run was one of the biggest holes I have seen, at any level. I would like to see the GRIZ add more sets with both Nguyen or Canada, with Moore. I feel Dan Moore has earned more minutes. I have ZERO worries with our running game, unless you consider who to play minutes behind Moore, a worry.
I expected some growing pains an inconsistent QB play this year. I like McKinney's upside potential, but our passing game has to find more consistency. I would rather see a qb over throwing, than under throwing. I do think his arm is stronger than JJ's was last year after 3 games. I do think he has enough arm strength to give the GRIZ a down field threat. I don't know if he has the accuracy or touch yet. Then again, I was questioning JJ's long passing last year, and he got much better. McKinney does not have the pocket presence yet. If I were a DC, I would be playing Montana WR's and rbs tight, and have McKinney beat us deep. I would not be blitzing a lot, I would force him to make decisions. His decision making was very tentative against Liberty. The GRIZ need to add more slant and hook ins to utilized the middle of the field. Most the passing game is outside the hash marks, and pretty simple to see when defending the GRIZ. The passing game, does need improvement. Overall, the offense is solid. It will get better as the staff develops Trent.
Defense: I never thought there would be a day when I would see a Gregorak Defense be tentative or passive in any area. The front 7 depth, is great, and has many players that can impact a game. The secondary is not close to GRIZ standards. I did not see one DB play aggressive pass defense. AS a group they struggle in man and zone. Then again they are inexperienced. I hope coach Gregorak and the DBs get it figured out. It is frustrating seeing a team pick the defense apart with short pass after short pass. They have to get a more aggressive scheme.
Tripp and Wags were beasts on the field today. Wags played out of his head. I hope that continues.
Overall, a nice W, but I am not sure what to expect of this team in passing and defending the pass.
