Post game: One Moore Griz Nguyen in the books

Liberty is a solid FCS program. They need more size though.

As for the GRIZ, this game left me with more concerns than I was expecting. The main concerns being our passing game, and our passing defense. I absolutely love the GRIZ rushing game, run defense, OL play, and front 7 play on defense. Also the silver lining for this game, was special teams, very solid, and better than I expected. Coverage and return game was better than I expected. Lider has a much stronger leg than I was expecting for a freshman. This guy will be very good when he finds consistency to striking the ball.

Offense: I love our depth at rb. Dan Moore is by far the better impact rb. I loved the little we seen of Canada and Kirshner. Canada was running wit a purpose, and Kirshner giving the coaches reason to play him more. Again, OL play was very good. The hole Moore had on his TD run was one of the biggest holes I have seen, at any level. I would like to see the GRIZ add more sets with both Nguyen or Canada, with Moore. I feel Dan Moore has earned more minutes. I have ZERO worries with our running game, unless you consider who to play minutes behind Moore, a worry.

I expected some growing pains an inconsistent QB play this year. I like McKinney's upside potential, but our passing game has to find more consistency. I would rather see a qb over throwing, than under throwing. I do think his arm is stronger than JJ's was last year after 3 games. I do think he has enough arm strength to give the GRIZ a down field threat. I don't know if he has the accuracy or touch yet. Then again, I was questioning JJ's long passing last year, and he got much better. McKinney does not have the pocket presence yet. If I were a DC, I would be playing Montana WR's and rbs tight, and have McKinney beat us deep. I would not be blitzing a lot, I would force him to make decisions. His decision making was very tentative against Liberty. The GRIZ need to add more slant and hook ins to utilized the middle of the field. Most the passing game is outside the hash marks, and pretty simple to see when defending the GRIZ. The passing game, does need improvement. Overall, the offense is solid. It will get better as the staff develops Trent.

Defense: I never thought there would be a day when I would see a Gregorak Defense be tentative or passive in any area. The front 7 depth, is great, and has many players that can impact a game. The secondary is not close to GRIZ standards. I did not see one DB play aggressive pass defense. AS a group they struggle in man and zone. Then again they are inexperienced. I hope coach Gregorak and the DBs get it figured out. It is frustrating seeing a team pick the defense apart with short pass after short pass. They have to get a more aggressive scheme.

Tripp and Wags were beasts on the field today. Wags played out of his head. I hope that continues.

Overall, a nice W, but I am not sure what to expect of this team in passing and defending the pass.

Who was more lethargic today.. the crowd or the offense?

Both. I'm so tired of the NEZ just sitting there when even Griz Vision and the cheer sqaud are asking for noise. People look at me like I'm nuts because i'm standing and screaming. The NEZ isn't even close to what it used to be.

I like how everyone pretty much ignores Monte.. guy used to be able to get a crowd going.. now people could give two shits if he's on the field or not.. they gotta figure out a way to get him more involved or can him altogether. Commercials in the middle of football games for every little thing is pretty annoying to people too.. every break is another advertisement or commercial. The crowd was dead today, the smoke was terrible.. cold weather can't get here soon enough, that's when the crowd gets back into games.

Offense wasn't good today.. McKinney is still pretty iffy about keeping the ball and going rather than handing off to one of the backs and hanging them out to dry behind the line. And speaking of hanging out to dry, McKinney has gotta get the short passes under control.. he's flying a lot of balls to receivers that are going to get them lit up by an aggressive corner.. the screens that fly are going to be INTs when we play someone good.

we have a great chrowd when they are there,,,on tv i noticed even mid way through the third quarter, the sides of the stands were half full at best...is drinking beer that important to our fans, that they don't get back for the game til late in the second half ???? must be spoiled, most fans that live in other parts of the country would be in their seats at the start of the second half to watch the griz play football...
24-0 answers that ????

Great post-game report by BWahlberg....I give you props as you are one of the few folks on here I can agree with on almost every aspect. I think you are really spot on with your feedback.

My biggest worry (and it just got bigger today) is the secondary. Giving up 300+ passing yards and letting their QB have a 150 point passer rating is unacceptable in my book. A team with a strong passing game is going to pick us apart with that type of play. I feel receivers have been open....a lot....in all 3 of our games. They were open all day today. We need to tighten that up or we are going to struggle against the passing attack teams.

Liberty impressed me on D. They were very fast to the ball and were very disciplined so the zone-read did not really fool them at all today. Offense was hard to watch today....when Liberty can run a screen for 5 yards a crack why can't the Griz? How are behind the line of scrimmage are they throwing those passes? I saw Canada catch a pass, break a tackle and went upfield. I thought it was a good play until I saw they actually lost a yard. :?

This is a young team but they are improving every week and will continue to get more comfortable and execute better.....Hey App got beat by 24 today at home...Montana could have been them.

I am watching the replay. I need to add how impressed I am with Kidder and Gamboa. Kidder is quick for a DL and has very good future. Gamboa was all over the place on special teams. He made a few key special teams tackles, and was always near the ball.

This has been getting at me for a while. Even in the first game 5 mins into the second half the stadium was just barely starting to fill up. It's BS. We need to be in our seats being loud as hell for all 60 mins of the game. You come to a GRIZ GAME. You don't buy a ticket to go tailgate. Pound some beer, and get some food and get back in the stadium.

What happen to Montes intro?! Comes out on some stupid ATV with a lame intro. What happened to the
tunnel and the chopper (i know he laid it over a few times but can't we get them some lessons?!) And the music playing loud as hell. They better do something big for homecoming and get the crowd going.

And my post from another thread about the rest:

I feel like this board is repeat of last year. Everyone was throwing JJ and Pflu under the bus then look how it turned around. It's another building year. Very young QB who is doing a great job at this point. He is taking control of this offense and working on building his confidence. Yes he needs some work but so does the rest of the team. Our receivers that have the capability of getting down field are young. We aren't throwing across the middle at all which is where Gratton shines due to TM's inexperience. Our defense needs some real work. DLine and linebackers are doing well but the CB's need some work and so do our safeties. Never have I seen our safeties shy away from so many hits and opt to get mowed over and hang on rather than pop someone. I miss our head hunters of past years. With all that said I think TMac will come around and do well for us once he calms down and gets more comfortable. Same with the rest of the team. I'm excited for the potential this team has.

NzoneGrizWhiz , just asking, are you a newer Griz fan/season ticket holder? I only ask because what you described in the halftime crowd has been going on for nearly two decades now. Not sure how you expect HALF, of 25,000 people to change something that has been happening, and being handed down for two generations now. I do NOT like the practice of staying out at the tailgates until the third quarter is half over. Some GREAT plays have happened in Wash-Griz over the years during that time. I think five or six years ago, the university toyed with idea of not allowing anyone back in after halftime, but (wisely, IMO) decided not to roll with it. Tailgating is every bit a part of the Griz tradition as Monte or the Skydivers and it hasn't changed and I suspect it won't change any time soon. Some people go to the games more for that than the games, but the fact is, they still buy the tickets and pay the money and they are still fans, and there's no reason to alienate any set of fans over another...Jus sayin......

Nope, been a season ticket holder for 15+ years. And I'm not trying to alienate anyone. I know some great plays have happened during that time, but just wish there were more fans back in the stadium to cheer for them. I know my mini rant there will have a probability of about 0 in the grand scheme of actually changing it at all, just been something that has always bothered me. I tailgate before and during half sometimes as well and think its a very important part of the football games (look at MSU and their tailgates, yikes). Just think its important to be there for our team as well

Monte blows now, just like any other lame generic mascot. We might as well be the Cambell Freaking Camels with the amount of excitement and pride Monte brings.

And skydivers are done since the one last year went splat outside the stadium.

Since your examples are terrible, it could be changing soon.

Silvetip hasn't been diving because of the smoke. They will be diving as soon as it clears I'm sure.

Anyways can we turn this thread back to discussing the game as it was initially intended?

they trained those parachute dudes to drop into fires decades ago and now they cant even land on a perfect flat football field cuz of a little 'smoke'???!!! LAME. they deserve to be replaced if there gonna keep getting drunk and crashing into tailgaters imo. i would rather see monte on the tank or a wild ass horse or somethin

Bad - The offense was bad all around. TM did not have a good day, and seemed to take a step backwards. 14 yards was the longest completion - (besides the 10 yards the receiver ran sideways). Outside of Gratton, the WRs couldn't block, and could not get any separation from the Liberty d-backs. On the other side our D-backs were pathetic. I can't recall a single pass defended. Unless the Liberty QB just plain missed on the pass (aside from Tripp's INT), the pass was complete. Worst of all was the safety play. I can't recall a worse pair of safeties in recent history. Hopefully this is correctable with experience.

The good - Our front 7 is great and fun to watch. I am glad Canada got some reps. He played well.

Lastly, agree with everything said about the crowd. I sit in the NEZ and by the end of the first half, most were sitting on their hands. Also, what the hell is up with the lame pregame?

I honestly believe the reason the crowd gets back into it when the weather gets colder is because in their minds it's the only time they need to. Griz Nation has become rather spoiled, and expect the Griz to excel in the early part of the season and even patty-cake conference games at home later in the year. As far as home playoff games are concerned, because we've been so consistent in getting them, the crowd just thinks they'll save their energy for those. Just my thoughts, but I don't think they're far from the truth.

Props to RBs Canada and Kirschner, both ran hard. Canada is such a flowing/gliding runner. Kirshner, in his first three carries, tore off runs of 10 yards, 10 yards, and 9 yards. So in three carries he damn near had 30 yards (for basically a 10 yard average) even though Liberty knew we were most likely going to run it late in the game. I've always liked this kid and new he was good, it's going to be fun watching Canada and him next year, along with Counts.

I was reading these posts and couldn't believe that no-one (until mtgrizrule) had mentioned the standout special teams play of true freshman Herbert Gamboa. Everyone had been clamouring about his recruitment, his speed, I mean come'on. :) Anyways, he is ALWAYS around the returner, usually the one making the tackle. And that's saying something because we've got such good players on ST, like Walden and Moore and of course many others. So be on the lookout for #20. He's a ST demon/tackler. He played great at ASU too, I remember he was the guy that got the 2nd half KOR tackle...
