Great post-game report by BWahlberg....I give you props as you are one of the few folks on here I can agree with on almost every aspect. I think you are really spot on with your feedback.

My biggest worry (and it just got bigger today) is the secondary. Giving up 300+ passing yards and letting their QB have a 150 point passer rating is unacceptable in my book. A team with a strong passing game is going to pick us apart with that type of play. I feel receivers have been open....a lot....in all 3 of our games. They were open all day today. We need to tighten that up or we are going to struggle against the passing attack teams.[/quote

You watch. Coach Delany will say at his Monday press conference that " the safeties continue to improve their overall play including their tackling. That is a "lock".

No one can argue that. However, fans know the secondary would be a weak spot with their youth. Every game - I hope - they will get better and better. EWU will have a field day if Montana's secondary does not improve each game

What are you talking about?

Coaches never talk in "coach speak" during press conferences.

Everybody knows they avoid cliches and generic terms at all costs.

Petey N. showed why he's back on punt returns. His return created momentum and got us going in the right direction. Hopefully, this will shut the pieholes of his detractors.

It hasn't.

BW- good write up...

The Starting Front Defensive 7 yesterday is very good and the best thing is we will have them all next year. Good to see the starting linebackers JP, Coyle, and Tripp all led the team in tackles with 10-JP, 9-Tripp, 8-Coyle....This shows that not many plays make it past them!!!

The D-Line had great game and this must continue! Props to #58 Wags on a hell of a game.. We need all them to keep stepping up

The back end is a bit nerve racking but i believe as the season continues the CB's will start making plays and the Safteys will get better as well...

I also might add that we have not played a conference game yet... i believe the offense and defense has been called relatively "vanilla" in the sense they have not opened up playbook yet... EXPECT this to change and the griz come out firing on both sides of ball next week! :thumb:

GO GRIZ!

I personally just don't see McKinney getting us to the playoffs, at least right now. He holds on to the ball for sooooo long, and there's no deep threat whatsoever. A couple potential big play receivers, but no one to get them the football. And that friggin swing pass, man is that one hard to watch. This in addition to a young secondary thats getting torched pretty regular, and its hard to envision. The showing they made at App was impressive considering all they have to work on.

But the kicking game is hugely improved already, and as always, the defense other than the secondary is bad ass and will keep them in games when the offense sputters. They really took it to Liberty and it was fun to watch that part anyway..... :twocents:

It's one game at a time fellas........ The other team is trying to win too...... Our pass coverage was vanilla against Liberty and I think the coaching plan was play soft and tackle. Now there were no huge hits that made us go "WOW" but for the most part they wrapped up the ball carrier well and there was not alot of YAC IMO. The front seven did what they can do and created turnovers (didn't do that too well in the previous two games.......)
Someone said we need to be more aggressive in the secondary...... Well that's exciting and gets the crowd pumped with a huge hit or int. but in reality it also opens up the big play and you can get torched.
I just think our game-plan against the flames was to keep their wide-outs/RB's/TE's in front of the defenders. If you do that their QB is going to get his short completions and rack up some yards.... The "bend-don't-break" approach BH used allot.
Bottom line we won 34 to 14 and the outcome was never in question. We were able to play "vanilla" because Liberty let us play that way.
Enjoy this win Griz Nation and pray for some rain so we don't have to inhale smoke all game. That definately sucked... Football is much more fun in the colder weather for sure.

Thanks for the post-game! Spot-on, I think.
I watched the Liberty Feed, so that could've tainted my perception (goodness knows their commercials made me wanna vomit). I felt as thought Liberty was a good team that our offense really couldn't push around. Thank goodness for special teams! Hopefully that was a little bit of an off day for TM. We'll definitely need a pass threat against NAU or it'll be a long day.
And how 'bout Lider?! Wow, I'm glad he's already kicking well. Should be one of the Griz Greats for kickers.

Go Griz!

GO GRIZ!

I don't want to sound like "Chicken Little" here so hang with me. I think that this Griz team is potentially a 8 or 9 win team this year because of their O-Line, Running Backs and their Defensive Front Seven. But to you fans that are in the "this secondary will significantly improve over the course of the season" crowd, here are a few points to ponder-

1. The quarterback from Liberty that just threw for 300+ yards against us was a freshman. He was inserted into the lineup because the starter was hurt late in last week's game.

2. For the third week in a row, we got beat on a "skinny post" for big yardage. I know it wasn't a TD but it should have been. The Liberty QB put to much air under the ball and our DBs were able to recover. That was the play where Tully, who was completely out of position on the play, came in late and hit the receiver and got flagged for PI. This type of "breakdown" has cost the Griz two TDs so far this season and that play should have the third time. It is the third game of the year and we still have not made an adjustment to stop that "play". The opposing offensive coordinators now have three game tapes on our secondary's "breakdowns".

3. After the "beat down" at the hands of The Citadel, how good is the passing game of ASU? Their quarterback threw for 260 yards and had two TDs against the Griz. He had passer rating of 154.2 against us when it was all said and done. We were touting that game as a great "moral victory" because the Griz "hung" with ASU on their home turf. Does anyone view that Griz loss to ASU differently now after ASU's loss the The Citadel?

4. The Griz have a totally new and inexperienced Defensive Coordinator in Coach Ty. We have other new defensive coaches as well, including a new safeties coach. Are they all on the same page? Where are the adjustments? I am hearing through the "grapevine" that Coach Ty's new defensive scheme is very complex with a lot of pre-snap "checks" and "audibles". Are our secondary players confused? Is that why they seem to be out of position a lot? Nobody brings this point up.

5. In terms of passing teams, how much better is the competition going to be in the Big Sky Conference this year? I don't know a lot about Eastern Washington but I have heard that they are good. North Dakota just put up 430 yards passing against San Diego State this last Saturday. North Dakota almost won the game but they stalled in San Diego State's territory on forth down play with a few seconds remaining. I am sure San Diego State's secondary is better than ours. The North Dakota game, by the way, is on the road this year. Then there is SUU which has a NFL "prospect" directing their offence this year. You gotta believe he will throw for some yards against the Griz. I really don't know how vulnerable the Griz are against MSU so I won't even mention that game. The Griz seemed to "own" them year in and year out so is a loss really that probable?

If you have any other thoughts, please "chime" in.

Thoughts: The Griz secondary is a weak spot. I think it's been discussed ad nausiam at this point. What good does it do for you to keep writing diatribes about it? Are you the secondary coach that should replace Aric Williams and make these guys better? Are you sending your suggestions to the staff to make them better, with the dilusion that it will be taken into account?

As fans, I think we're ALL aware three games in that Montana's secondary is not very good and will continue to struggle, WHILE getting better at the same time. The Griz just have to play through it. If they lose games because of it, then that sucks, if they continue to win in spite of it, then that is great. Either way, it is what it is.

this year they are giving them as much as 12 yards on the line.......way too soft....i agree we are gonna pay a big price for this and it could be this week if they are watching the game film......hopefully the coaching staff have a good reason for this non aggressive play...hope it is not inexperience or a confidence issue....won't be much of a change if that is the case

- First time in a long time I've noticed a coaching break-down where the QB on field has no play call and has to call a timeout himself after hopping around trying to get the coaches attention for a call.
It was not necessary for McKinney to show up the coaches with his animation. Sure somebody screwed up, but demonstrating it to the whole stadium was bush. Call the timeout quietly without gyrations and get it straightened out.
