We ran 90+ plays against NDSU and haven't come close to that since. Last night, the hustle, uptempo was not employed at all...60 plays for the Griz offense...will the uptempo return?
The defense did very well last night again!
That's not entirely true......they ran 92 plays against BOTH NDSU and Cal Poly. They only ran 74 against Liberty. There are a number of factors here, mainly being:
- inability to convert 3rd downs and also 3 and outs
- Liberty putting together some sustained clock-eating drives, which kept the Griz O off the field
- Liberty TOP was 36 mins vs the Griz 24
- not many good opportunities to go for it on 4th down due to poor field position or long yardage
Nguyen has 41 carries for 165 yards, an average of 4.0. I'm not sure anyone has been good at pass protection; when there is no threat of the run, the DL can pin their ears back and make a dash to the QB. I don't see little JN stopping a charging DL-man.mcg said:I think he is good at pass protection, and he has averaged 5 yards per carry.Inland NW Griz said:I still can't figure out why Nguyen starts. He's slow and gets arm tackled constantly. He's shifty, but that doesn't matter if he can't get into space. If he's the best back they have, that's a serious problem

And showed we have absolutely none. The difference was glaring.
I've seen a couple fly sweeps; both went for losses.Grisly Fan said:Have we seen the "Stitt sweep" run even once yet? I keep looking for it and maybe I missed it the one or two times. We run play action with it but has the ball yet been given to the sweeping receiver?
The Liberty game was lost due to mistakes. Take away half of them and the Griz might have won. Bad snaps, missed assignments, bad scrambles, missed kicks, dropped passes, and on and on. Clean that stuff up and we'll be OK. There is a whole lot of talent on the field and they just need to start to execute to their potential.
One mistake I might even be happy with would be the occasional OL holding call. I think I saw one on a big run play but it seems like the OL is not pushing the envelope on passing plays. Testing the limits might help our pass protection.
That would come under the category of "excuse."Mmont said:Long layoffs can help or hurt. Most times it appears they hurt. The sixteen day layoff the Cats had really hurt their young defense like it did the Griz offense.

Yeah, things changed with Gus going out hurt, probably won't be back and ready for 10 weeks. The offense sure lacked on assignments, couldn't block, dropped balls, poor center to quarterback transition, runners hesitating and need some gaps. Throwing out of bounds to save a knock down, sacks, losing yards! Could not get the ball through the uprights, missed PAT. Defense allowing huge holes and the Griz were clearly beat in the first 10 min. 0-14 against Liberty!
I saw that our back up quarterback came in 0-17 second quarter, with a team that seemed deflated. The entire offense not really prepared for the changes, Ol, center, backs, receivers, kicker all hand to adjust their mindset. The transition for the changes immediate, but a team with emotion that after a three and out, rallied to put points on the board. Chalich or Simis was our hope for a recovery! Chalich stepped in against a good team, he showed that he could compete with composure and hart! He was not going to just turn and run as some implied, he took the hits and hung onto the ball. He didn't try and thread the ball through defenders hands. Covered up the overhead snaps, and hung on from some lightning blitz's.
Overall the team was making the changes midway working together, the defense strengthened, our team was adjusting. The boys ended up putting 21 points on the board, never giving up. The emotional stresses both wore on our boys, and made them work outside a comfort zone. These boys are going to grow from this game and this game alone!! They are going to put everything behind them and rally! Doesn't matter who gets the assignment, they just need to work as a team and will !!!
So, Go Griz!!!
