Post Game: Is JJ back?

Mtgriz - I think it might be but I still think this team is more limited by the O line than the playcalling. I do worry that we're really leaning on being a power run team with the smallest and lightest o line we've probably ever had. I too want to see a more dynamic offense, like what we saw in the first quarter - or one that can continually execute and perform into the 2nd half.

That "conservative" play is what leads to injuries. 3rd and 4th quarters may just as well not have been played. Our defense got pretty beat up in the second quarter. Granted UNC went from negative yardage to 130 with the help of 3 major penalties. But was by no means a dominating performance by Montana in the first half either. We are not going to play many teams where we can get the job done in one quarter an a couple of big plays.

I'd be curious to see if there's a study in conservative play vs aggressive play and how it leads to injuries. Would this suggest Stanford is riddled with injuries year after year while Oregon is healthy every season?

I would highly doubt conservative play causes more injuries. But that's just a guess.

No it means that making calls to avoid unnecessary risk is one thing but play calling that exposes the same players over and over wears them down, takes them longer to recover from the routine stuff leads to injuries.

I agree. Positives and negatives but this was UNC......Big lead in the first and then got outscored 13-10 the rest of the way. This team should have put a couple more scores up. Hopefully this game will give the team a good feeling going forward.

Not quite. At one point, the score was 21-7. Which means the rest of the scoring was 17-6, Griz.

Did anyone on offense get hurt other than Nguyen? Football is a dangerous game. People sometimes get hurt. Running the ball over and over again doesn't increase risks; that's just plain silly. I can't think of any offensive play-calling that exposes offensive players to more risk, other than running the qb and perhaps sending receivers over the middle in certain patterns. Even the latter usually doesn't cause big risk in college.

I said this off-season that the new OL was going to be a big problem early in this season, and that they would need to improve fast as the season went along! That the season record depended on it. Losses to Wyoming and NDSU were expected from me with this weak OL.

At the snap, opponents DL are re-establishing the line-of-scrimmage 2 yards deep in the Griz backfield. It's frustrating. Even coach Delaney said our line is getting "whipped physically" at times.

I've seen improvement, will the OL improvement continue? I sure f'n hope so!

The Griz are loaded with top talent everywhere except OL. The Griz could be champions or chumps, it's up to the young OL.

The Griz have top talent at the O-Line too. It's just young, and pushed into a starting role 1-2 years early in many cases.

Reese was playing for his HS at this time last year for God's sake.

We did have a few set backs on the O line but as noted they are better over all. Next year and the year after we will be proud of how well the line is performing. Experience is speeding up the learning curve. Bull blocking for the run was a bit of a set back in my opinion but our pass blocking was very improved. The line is coming....we need to be patient. Learning on the job. But these guys will get us through this season and who knows how far they allow us to go? I like the potential!

JJ is doing better and for all the punishment he has received this year he is remarkable. Not many can absorb the hits and still be passing as well as he does! I am very proud of him.

Soon as JJ gets confidence in his hogs up front he will have a better time knowing what he can and can't do. Right now he is limited with the amount of time he has (not much) to let plays develop down field, and we know we have the studs to make plays deep.
I truly think if the offense can just start to click a bit more we will be off and running and will be in a position to talk about the BSC title.

I realize I am late and the feathers have already been ruffled, but please ignore IronEagle. He is a cat fan troll who goes around pretending to be an EWU fan.

Great win over UNC. I didn't watch the whole thing, but I was impressed with what I saw. The more games I watch the Griz in, the more impressed I have become. At the beginning of the season, I was ready to write them off as middle of the pack Big Sky. Now I realize I was seriously mistaken. I hope to see more improvements from the Griz. We need to whip some MVFC ass when playoffs come around.

With the size or our O-line, I'm not sure "hogs" is the appropriate term. Maybe piglets, albeit, rather large piglets.

I laughed out loud when I looked up at GrizVision and noticed the Jordan Johnson was the Missoulian player of the game. Yep, the Missoulian player of the game was Jordan Johnson. I'm guessing the news staff has no say in who gets the recognition, probably made them gag. I hope to see this every week.

They had to call the running into the punter, you can't let something like that go, they hit him both times.

But they shouldn't have picked up the first down when it was 4th and 6. They should have replayed the down making it 4th and 1

The refs made an error giving them the first down for that..

Classic BSC ref mistake.

Morons.

I understand letting off the throttle with a big lead, but I'd sure like to see the offense and JJ play at a dominating level for more than one quarter. It's great if they can turn it on at will, but I don't think we've seen that yet. Here's hoping.

Nice report, as always.
