Post Game: Good win, need some work

I heard that Kemp was deemed ineligible by the NCAA because of a new ruling that was retroactive and affected about 72 college football players. Something to do with credits carried or the lack of.????? Have to do some digging on that one I guess.

I may be in the huge minority here but I don't think that was pass interference on the fake FG. It happened right in front of me and it looked to me like the Griz player ran into the defender as he turned inside to catch the ball. Haven't had a chance to see the replay and may change my mind once I do but that was my impression after watching it live.

I agree. The DB has a right to his space. The receiver turned into him.

As usual, Brint sums it up pretty good..

A few of my observations

OFFENSIVE LINE!!! I don't care what Growler says about USD's defense, the O-Line will push ALOT of teams around provided they stay healthy.

Freshman kickers alleviated some of my worries. Lider and Shaw will get better and better.

Defense is faster than I imagined. My first look at Tyrone Holmes. WOW. His speed will have him an all-american in a couple of years.

Brint, I believe Dennard messed up on the TD bomb. Josh and Goodwin both struggled with scheme today. I noticed Hermy and Tully having to coach them up on the fly a lot. Assuming those two will continue to play alot, they need to get in the film room hard and get the calls down because they were out of position alot today and their athleticism will only carry them so far. I noticed Tully really got on Dennard during a time out, so much so that he had to go back to Josh afterwards and slap his helmet to let him know he was just trying to help.

The two Sean's. Murray and Haynes are everything I thought they'd be and then some in real games.

FINALLY: The crowd. I have been hyper critical of opening day and early season crowds in recent years, but I'm gonna go ahead and give the crowd a solid B+ today, which is a lot better than recent September games. It got relatively loud and for once the south endzone was doing its part well. The student section was in full force today as well.

All in all, a good day. I was worried the game would get away from the Griz for a minute there, but then I realized the defense wasn't going to allow that. Other than some young players making understandable mistakes, I gained a ton of confidence and excitement in the Griz' defense today. A lot of linebackers back, but when you lose 10 starters, no one is going to know for sure until they play and I loved what I saw in the Griz defense today.

OK now lets move on to the areas of needed improvement:

- Looked like a few communication errors and confusion from the staff. The burned time out before the fake fieldgoal was one. Taking a holding call on the USD first TD drive which would've had a 4th and 4 but rather set up a 3rd and 14 which was picked up and eventually lead to a TD. Also while it's nit-picky they should've kicked the PAT when we scored the TD that gave us the lead.

Go GRIZ!

They went for 2 because being up by 5 is pointless. You go for 2 and try to get up by 6. That makes them need a TD and extra point to get the lead back.

Also you take that holding penalty because you hope to stop them and make them kick a longer FG. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way.

I was impressed with the Griz today!

From my seat in the NEZ I believe this is a very fair assessment of todays game. :thumb:

Gotta disagree. Should've kicked it. Being up five IS advantageous because then a FG makes it an 8 point game.

Brint,

I agree with all you said - one thing I did think the bench blew was the use of our Timeouts at the end of the 1st half. We were headed into what would have been at least FG range and ran out of time with 2 TO's left on the board.

It was gratifying to see the intensity of the team ramp up when we lost the lead. That will come in handy later in the year, I would imagine. I'm thinking this win is going to help this team a lot more than the usual easy blowout of a Div II team. Lots of lessons to be learned.

Sure is nice to be back at WaGriz watching a fast-paced win by the boyz. And there were a lot of new faces that looked like they belong on a Montana football team that can actually win playoff games.

Josh Dennard had multiple blown assignments today, one of which resulted in the 80 yd touchdown. I saw another couple where if USD had protected their QB better it would have been a sure td. Hopefully he continues to improve.

I didn't get to see all the game boys. And I sure in hell didn't read all of the posts on this thread. You picked up a nice V for Mick. With all the bullshit that's been goin on over there, just enjoy it. It's the first game and your fellas hung in there and won the game. Let the first poster who has pleyed in a game for the griz, talk shit or knitpick. It's been a long off season for your team. Take the win and move on. Stadium coaches are weak. Oh that's right, they don't coach or play.

was in front of me as well and that is how i saw it. hardy turned in toward the defender to look for the ball which impaired his ability to focus on where the ball was being thrown. the defender was right next to him doing his job covering and not pushing or even touching hardy............ therefore no penalty

It also looked like the free safety (Hermanson) didn't rotate over, and he is the one Coach Ty was talking to on the sideline.

This was a good effort against a good quality opponent. 35 points and over 500 yards in offense in the first game of the season indicates good things to come offensively.

Like many of you I had the same impression on the defense. The backs were out of position alot and had it not been for the defensive pressure up front USD could have had some big plays against the UM secondary. However the secondary did show speed to close and I noticed that with a few exceptions, (the one TD and a couple of other plays), the USD receivers did not get alot of yards after the catch.

I did not clearly see the fake punt so I won't comment. However I do think the ref missed the call on the last fumble when they called a lateral instead of a forward pass. It certainly appeared to me that the quarterbacks motion was forward and the ball was batted by the defense. I thought that was a bad call.

Offensively, as we all saw, that pass out to the sideline was a huge weopon for the Griz. But I have a different take on the concerns that a better opponent will stop that play. You take what the defense gives you and it appeared to me that USD's defense was geared toward stopping anything across the middle. They never made any adjustment to stop that sideline pass and so the griz kept going to it. Also there was nobody within 15 yards of the receiver on the option play, in part because the defense was set up to take away the middle pass. What the offense showed me was that they will be able to adapt quickly to a changing defense if needed. In that regard I was particularly impressed with the play of the O-line in both pass and run blocking. When was the last time we had two 100+ rushers in any game let alone the first game of the season?!

Special teams coverage wasn't too bad but conversions need some work. On the blocked extra point the kicker hit more of a line drive and simply did not get enough height on the kick.

The Griz do have some things to work on, but overall, kudos all around for yesterday's effort.

That 36-10 drubbing in Bozeman last year!
We're pretty much starting off right where we left off. :thumb:

I have to say this was one of, if not the best "complete package" opening day games I've seen the Griz play...
We are going to have a really good team as this season progresses.... Mark my words.....
First game, "freshman" jitters QB play...... hardly...... this kid is talented and very smart.....
A few mistakes by a young team....... Yet mistakes which are all coachable and will be cleaned up.
Just think back and tell me when is the last time we didn't watch a game where the Griz went 3 and out a butt load? Or play a really bad qtr. or two... in which the defense would keep us in the game long enough for the offense to wake-up and pull a win outta' their collective asses?
Before you say....... well we played SD....... I remind you of all the D-2 teams we'd play like shit for the whole game and pull off a win "some how"..
I'm excited, and outside of picking gnat shit outta' pepper there isn't too much to complain about......
Go GRIZ....... Great win
