Post Game: By the will of Jordan Canada

An accurate recap of todays performance by the Griz. I've wondered about the obvious holding also and have been scratching my head for weeks. Maybe we need to adjust and become more "touchy" this week on the "o" line. I think the secondary needs to make more calculated risks also...GO GRIZ!!... :egriz:

I'm trying not to just look at it as a homer fan but it seems like this year it's nuts what tackles are allowed to do to defensive ends.
Yes. Like I alluded to and AZ commented, maybe we need to get a hold of a few more jerseys. I'm sure we're NOT overly aggressive on the "O" line this year. I know there are some solid bean counters on this board. How many holding calls have we been whistled for this year? I'm thinking too few , if that is possible. Maybe they have to run up and touch the "M" if they get caught holding?... :egriz:

As always, a great recap, BDub. You touched upon many things I thought of as well as the game progressed.

I'd only add this: it was GREAT to see Wilson finally get his first TD carry!! And I LOVED his teammate's reactions. What he does doesn't appear in the stat sheet, but you can tell Wilson has the respect of every single player out there.

Yes, we get way too few offensive holding calls. And I mean that in a positive light. To me, our best O-line coach was Chad Germer. He taught his linemen to start the game by being very aggressive, grabbing, pulling jerseys, whatever they could get away with. If the officials were going to allow that, they would keep doing it all game. If they got flagged a couple of times, they let up a bit. The result was that our QB had lots of time to throw. Our current line rarely gets a holding call. If you are not getting flagged once in awhile, you are not being aggressive enough.

It was really frustrating to watch SUU key on the Griz interior offensive line. At the beginning of the game, it seemed like one of our guards couldn't block the right guy to save his life.

I like Scott Gragg. I think he's a great person and a great technician. A scholar and a leader with good Christian values. His players are struggling more than they should this late in the season.

I could not care less what his religion is. On Monday-Saturday, I hope it's Griz football. And the O-line has had a rough year. Clearly they're not all on the same page in the hymnal, regardless of faith. But to carry the analogy a little further, it seems a little Sister Mary discipline with a steel ruler (as Carlin would say), is in order. A little rap on the knuckles might make 'em pay attention.

To me it seemed that the O-line became better after Jordan went down. Not reading anything into it but that the O-line realized that this was bad.

Agreed. As the season went on everyone noticed the holding against Holmes and Wagenman getting, well, unnoticed. This line needs more nasty and less coddling.

Here is the deal on refs calling holding on the O-linemen. They are only going to call it 0-5 times a game. Has anyone ever seen a college game in which holding was called more than 5 times? I never have. The refs do not want to dictate the outcome of the game with incessant penalties of the same type. They may call a ton of penalties, but not the same penalty over and over again.

So, getting 2,3,4 holding penalties on our O-line is not such as bad thing. The alternative is that your QB is landing on his ass after every pass, or hurrying his passes, or throwing into double coverage because he needs to get rid of the ball (how many times have we seen JJ do that this year?), or throwing interceptions due to pressure.

It was concerning to me when the commentators commented that it looked like a "different team" when SSH took over.

During Don Reads period we had tons of holding penalties!
Holding can be called every down on all teams, both sides.
Not only were our D-ends held, many of our receivers have been held every game. Again yesterday.
I think we should start a new game title called "Montana Holdem" and play a new brand of football.

This year's Griz team causes more stress for the fans than I can ever remember. Herky-Jerky plays and Herky-Jerky play calling are over the top. Special teams are simply a punishment to watch. The supposition of this team at the beginning of the season was good. Our coaching was indeed suspect but we new we had great players and we all had our usual pre season excitement flowing thinking we really could go all the way.

We enter the brawl this week. It will depend on our players to win this Montana Super Bowl and I know they can win this thing. My worry? Will our coaching allow our great players to win this game?

Canada is steller. The best running back in history to gain that kind of yardage with no initial holes being oppened. Jordy or the scheme needs to pick it up and get rid of damn ball instead of constantly extending the play and throwing to receivers who seem unable to get any late seperation. Receivers making spectacular catches as the norm surrounded by double and triple coverage. Last year wasn't much better. Clunky, predictable and out of synch.

Why did SUU start the other QB? I thought I heard someone say it was simply a reward to a senior on senior day??? IF that's true, OMF'nG, they gift-wrapped us the 1st quarter.

No, the regular starter missed the whole week of practice due to a death in the family.

It's also about the time the SUU defense tired.
