Post Game: An inconsistent win

The Griz have things to work on, but they were always going to win and were in control of the game. I wasn’t worried for even a second.

Butler is a pretty good team and has a terrific qb.

The Griz ended up with a big advantage in the stats.

Some receivers and backs need to catch the ball. Way too many drops.

I liked both QB’s.

I wish we had blitzed more.

Riley Wilson had the first 2 tackles of game and ended up with 6, which I believe was 3d on team.

Why doesn’t McDowell carry out a fake after he hands off.

The kicker looked terrific. The punter averaged 47 in 3 punts.

No fumbles by Griz.

Cotton’s family was up from Texas.

Secondary had good position multiple times, but allowed the catch.

Vidlak had chance to run in for score on second
drive.

Special teams play was very good.

Backers looked good. Hill had nice game and 8 tackles.

The rb’s ran well.

A very nice stadium atmosphere. Over 25,000
attendance.

I see the word “non-scholarship” team come up a lot, like that should make it an automatic beat down for any opponent. They are a non “athletic” scholarship team…..but don’t let that fool you. 90% of those players have full ride scholarships….academic ones. These are all dudes who have played high level football and have had offers to other schools who do award athletic scholarships, but they chose their full ride academic scholarship at Butler or at San Diego instead. They were 7-4 last year, have a Payton award watch QB, and played with nothing to lose. It’s not like these are young men who don’t know how to play or haven’t played high level football. Should the Griz have beat them by more at home…..yes. Am I worried about it at all….nope. First games are always weird and don’t tell us much.

Happy sunburn on half your face day to those who celebrate.

Montana came in as heavy favorites and while they never trailed today they found themselves clinging to a 1 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. Butler came to play while Montana was trying to find their way the whole afternoon. Butler played with nothing to lose, while Montana opened with a great TD on a (presumably) scripted first series, but then was stuck in the mud for quite some time after that. It took Montana a while to get their first, first down, the offense seemed really choppy at first. This felt like a game where a lot of new guys were needing to work the nervous energy out and it was showing on the field.

It's funny because at the end of the day Montana outgained Butler with a super balanced attack, 211 passing / 230 rushing. They held Butler to just 41 on the ground, and save two quick Butler scores really controlled most of the game. On the other hand Butler's pass defense had 263 in the air, converted a few improbable plays, and seemed to have some tremendous success fooling the Grizzly pass defense at times.

Should we freak out? Well... no. Should we be worried because we expected a bigger win? Yeah, I'd say so. The Grizzly offense returned a boatload of starters but was having issues with consistent rushing and passing. The defense was replacing quite a few more guys and at times it really did show. Improvement is needed and I'd bet the team and coaches know that.

Some additional thoughts:

- I thought Trevin Gradney had a phenomenal day. His stat line seems minimal but he had an incredible pick, plus another drive killing PBU. He almost had a 2nd pick as well. I think our starting 2 corners are locked in. Trevin and Corbin are a good duo. Still need to see more from the depth guys, that was a little shaky today.

- I hope you guys like a 2 QB system because it really feels like we're trending that way. McDowell is a really good runner and can throw pretty well - despite a non-existent stat line there - and Vidlak showed a lot of his skill with a few challenging moments too. I loved McDowell in the running game. Great mix of zone-read from McDowell, he brings such a great presence to the rushing game. Butler was generally unable to account for him. Vidlak today had some great throws and plays, he seemingly needs to continue to build confidence in his play and we'll be ok there. Of his 2 picks, one wasn't really his fault - it bounced of Racanelli's chest - the other wasn't good. He'll learn from that.

- I'm no OC, I've never coached or played the game, so maybe I'm some dumbass fan here but honestly I wanted to see more running plays early rather than so many passing plays.

- I'd guess the O-line guys weren't the happiest with their day. A few too many plays where they had issues getting a good push on an undersized, non-scholarship D-line. If this group is going to lead the way they're going to need to find a better stride fast.

- I expected some good stuff from Ryder Meyer this season... 12 tackles, a 2 point conversion score, and 1 TFL... wow. Great game for him.

- Love him or hate him the enforcer role of Robby Hauck didn't seem to be very heavily seen by other players today and I think it might've translated to a few lapses from the defense.

- Junior Bergen is that dude, hell of an opening TD and continued to fight through it all the whole day.

- I know this board has been all over Eli Gillman and his meteoric rise, I think even the casual fan got the full introduction on this kid today. 119 rushing and a TD is one heck of a day.

- It seemed to me the Grizzly defense was caught off guard by some of Butler's broad use of misdirection and trickery though the day.

- This Glasgow kid can kick!

- What a hit by Nash Fouch, I had family in Wisconsin texting me about it

- Once again I think the UM needs to press their TV deals to push all early September games to the evenings. Even with it "just" being in the mid-80's it felt way hotter inside the stadium. I saw multiple issues of older Griz fans having heat related issues plus many left for good at halftime because of the heat. September is consistently hot AF in the first half and booking a game that happens through the afternoon is asking for trouble. It seemed stadium EMT was really busy today. What do we have to do to make sure these games are all in the evening??!?

- The stadium crew had 9 months to make sure the ribbon and reader boards were working... and they didn't. Stuff happens but what a mess. Those of us in the stadium had no clue the clock time until near the half.

----------------

1-0 and now hitting the road. Like many of you I'm not blown away by this win and I'm left feeling a little nervous about the ongoing inconsistencies we saw today. However, now is the time to work out these issues and I hope this team can learn, build, and improve on this win.

Time to hit the road, let's keep rolling! Go Griz!

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why Brint is on the franchise tag.

Lots of things to be concerned about, but not an abysmal showing against a team that should challenge for a playoff spot this season.

I am going to be very critical, though.

Vidlak looked night and day different (and not in a good way) from the last time we saw him throw. Bad throws at all levels and he never really looked comfortable. I was a huge proponent of Sam and he did not look like the guy I thought he'd be out there. It's still early, and we'll definitely see more of him, but he has to do a better job if he wants to be the guy.

McDowell sure can run, but 2 of his 3 passes were not great. The offense did move a lot better with him in there, though, and the running game was so much better.

Continuing from their showing last year, the pass protection today was mostly great. Sam had a ton of time on most plays. A few breakdowns, but for the most part it was good. Run blocking was tough to gauge with how often they were throwing it, but looked good once Clifton came in.

I am officially concerned about this defense. They do not look to be on the same level the last 2 years' teams were. Apart from Gradney, our corners looked downright awful at times. Guys sometimes looked like they didn't know where they were supposed to be, which is not something we've seen. For all the hate he got, Robby Hauck's presence was sorely missed in the alley today. Lots of Butler players running free. I hope they figure it out because it looked rough a lot of the time.

That's the type of game you want all your glaring weaknesses to show on film, and there were a lot of weaknesses. I have faith they can nail things down, but the road gets a lot tougher from here, and we need to be a better football team than we showed today.

Really inconsistent OL play. They had trouble in the first half controlling the LOS. For a couple series in the second half, they gave Gilman and Childs some room to make cuts. These RBs are fine, they just need a hole to operate.
McDowell looks really one dimensional to me. Don't know that he will be that effective against good defenses. I thought Vidlak showed some good arm strength and did well in first start. Bobbie gives a hard lesson for mental mistakes.
All in all, right now the Griz are an average FCS football team.

I know a lot on here are saying that they are underwhelmed, etc.
I was anxious in the second quarter when we had three the and outs in a row, but most of those were timing issues between Vidlak and the receivers.
I would have liked to see more blitzes myself and there were some huge holes in the defense.
I do like the two QB system. If Vidlak can get on the same page with the receivers, having the first half of Vidlak bombing it then the second half of McDowell, Gilman, Harris pounding it down their throat, most defenses will be gassed by the middle of the fourth quarter.
One thing that concerns me and I might have missed it, where is Ostmo? I don't think he played one snap

Based on this performance, the BSky coach's poll could be pretty accurate.

Don't you understand that Griz fans know much more about predicting conference results than opposing football coaches? Let's see, 2021 4th place finish, 2022 6th place finish, 2023 8th place finish. Should be about right based on what I saw on the field yesterday.

An honest question for the “experts “ -
Is Grimsrud more valuable to this team as a guard or a DT?
We have other guards who might be an adequate replacement but only one DT with acceptable size.
Remember, he was recruited as a DT.

Things need to get worked out, but remember this is the FIST game with new QBs, some new coaches, and a lot of new players in positions.
Work needs to be done, that is a given.
With the work and settling down in positions, our future is bright.
Remember that the defense went up against a Walter Payton watch list QB who is a dual threat. They took away one of the threats.
I like this team and am looking forward to their future.

By the way if Butler were to play Utah Tech, I beleive Butler would spank Utah Tech.

Nice highlight reel. 27 minutes.

I can give the coordinators and team a solid B. Lots of room for improvement, but first game for a lot of them, hot AF and not a patsy team.

The ones who don't get a pass........the Stadium. Scoreboard issues, BORING pregame as usual, Monte sucks and almost fell, mis-timed the same old boring song at the beginning, Boom crew slow as usual, great crowd but extremely BLAH atmosphere. When literally all this University says is kids should WANT to come here look at our stadium........yeah you raised the bar about 10 years ago and have literally done nothing to keep improving. I have 2 nephews that were recruited here and that is all they bragged up the stadium and the history of the Griz........well it is history....how about move forward and stop resting on oh we have a nice stadium, oh we won 2 National Championships.....yep well over 20 years ago befor any of these recruits we even born.

UM needs to clean house starting at the top with Has-been. Once BH gets his precious most wins in Big Sky Conference history---which is his only thought or concern, he will be gone and hire a coach and get rid of this requirement of having to have a link to Montana Football. If we don't get the ship straightened out, little brother to the east is going to stomp a mud hole in us for many years to come.

Now that I am off my soap box, I hope this team continues to grow and improve....the kittens looked pretty damn good last night and more energetic and faster than the product we put out there.....1-0. Go Griz!!

What I saw was a defense that played a lot of players and had some good hits, offense that at many times was confused as to who should be on the field and where they should line up.
The scoreboard issue was unacceptable. The best stadium in FCS and it's not working properly.
It was warm, not as hot as some games played in early September, but there were a lot of people struggling with the heat. Why not a 11:00 am start or another night game.

All in all, right now the Griz are an average FCS football team.

Here’s a newsflash: every player is less effective against good defenses.

It was a long game day and night for me. No time to post until now.
1st, we fans need to chill the F out and consider that variables. Hmm, where to start?

Huge improvement with offensive play calling and player utilization.
The efforts were there to get everyone involved.
Could have there been better overall results on the scoreboard?
Most definitely so, the offense didn't capitalize on some opportunities, and gave Butler more opportunities than it should have. Hauck even touched on not capitalizing.

Despite the negatives, there's a lot to like and take from this game.
Over 400 yards of offense will win a lot games.
The offense was balanced, many players contributed, and we have plenty of playmakers.
It was nice to see us having a young RB that is capable of being a true workhorse, if needed.
Gillman is terrific. He's has solid speed, great balance, vision, and power.
Xavier Harris has added more power. He too looked solid.
Bergen, White, Fontes, Racanelli all contributed.
Unfortunately, Bergen dropped a nice 25 yardish pass over the middle.
Racanelli deflected the 1st interception. That pass should have been caught.
The offensive line didn't dominate.
However, for the most part, the QB's weren't pressured often.
They also created enough space to consistently run the ball with success.
I think the referees were very nitpicky on the holding calls.
Unfortunately, the so called holds made things more difficult for the offense.

I actually like the potential of this 2 qb system.
As for Vidlak, take the time to recall Sneed's 1st season starting.
Sneed was very inconsistent for the 1st half of his 1st season, then took off the 2nd half.
With that said, I feel too many fans are being way too harsh on Vidlak.
Over 150 yards passing in the 1st half is encouraging.
He did a terrific job of distributing opportunities to everyone.
His incompletions were just slightly off. For the most part, his passes were very catchable.
He threw bullets and touch passes.
Unfortunately, his 2nd interception was an absolutely terrible decision.
I was surprised by that decision. In the practices I saw, he threw the ball away.
He will learn from that decision. Let's not harp on it.
Fact is, he doesn't have a lot of in game experience.
Making mistakes is part of the growing and learning process.
I was actually impressed, he didn't let the called back plays negatively impact him.
Despite having 2 TD's called back, he still led the team to a TD on that possession.
Also, 1 possession was absolutely killed by a snapping error.
He had 1 long TD pass called back and roughly another 25 yard pass dropped.
Those took away from his stat line.
He's not a running qb. He does have enough footwork to keep plays alive though.
2 interceptions need to be cleaned up, but only 1 interception was on him.
I am sure, Racanelli and Bergen know, they need to make those plays.
Overall, I am confident, Vidlak is plenty capable of great things, as he gains experience.

As for McDowell, he has rapidly cleaned up his game.
In the practices I saw, he was a little careless with the ball and struggled finding offensive consistency.
Needless to say, this kid proved to me, he is a quick learner and nice qb option.
His athleticism, speed, and leadership are impressive.
What we know, he brings this offense a nice change up in terms of being an RPO QB.
He has to be accounted for in the running game.
As for his passing, from that game, we really have nothing to evaluate.
However, from the little I saw in practices, he has good arm strength.
I just don't know, where he is at as for accuracy and the type of passes he can make.
I will venture a guess though. I'm sure he's committed to being the best player, qb, and teammate he can be.
Fortunately, Pease kept with what was working.
There really wasn't any need to change things up with McDowell.
Next time we see him, I hope they let him pass now and then.

Unlike some here, I am surprisingly encouraged by our 2 qb potential.
I look forward to see how each of them improve.
Keep in mind, it takes time for qb's and WRs to get in sync in the passing game.
It's easier to get a running game in sync than a passing game.
There's just not as many variables involved with a running game.

Offensively, just have to emphasize the importance of decision making and clean up the shotgun snaps.
Right now, I'm really not that worried about it.
Forbes has the experience and proven results for me to know, snaps will not be an ongoing issue.
The fact that I have ZERO complaints on play calling and player utilization is a positive.

Defensively, I think a few are being overly critical.
Replacing 3 All Americans, with a new DC isn't easy.
It will take time for the defense to get in sync with one another.
Despite these factors, the defense took away a running game.
Somehow, they managed to keep a solid duo threat qb in check.
Allowing 263 yards passing is a little concerning.
Limiting a running game to 41 yards is encouraging.
The passing yards, aren't due to a lot of breakdowns.
I only recall 1 major break down, due to someone missing an assignment .
Most of Butler's passing yards were due to their WR's making terrific contested catches on 15 yard plus passes.
Butler earned most of their passing yards.
The defense has to work on winning more of those contested passes.
Forcing contested passes is a good sign.
Often, contested passes lead to turnovers.
Gradney was surprisingly great and has the look of a playmaker.
Walker was solid.
The depth beyond them needs to get better though.
Considering the overall inexperience at CB, I see a lot of opportunity for improvement.
That improvement in better postioning on contested passes will go a long way.
Safety play was actually solid for their 1st game.
Fouch is a damn intimidator. His hits will get into the heads of many opponents.
His tackle on the that running play was absolutely the hardest and nastiest hit I recall.
Those kind of hits are normally reserved on passing plays, not running plays.
After watching the replay on tv, that was a clean hit.
I'll never forget that hit. Fortunately, it happened right in front of our seats. It was a loud hit.
Everyone in our section heard and kind of felt that hit.
Cotton was consistent out there as well.
Ryder Meyer really stood out to me. That kid had one hell of a game.
I feel safety play is actually ahead of what I expected.

Frontline and LB play is where I am not sure what to think of.
There really wasn't a lot of results in terms of qb pressure. What's that due to?
I feel, most of it was the result of Bushka's experience and skills though.
Also, Butler's play calls were mostly of quick decision making.
They did a good job limiting our pass rushing pressure opportunities.
Pass pressure can't be truly evaluated until we face in the pocket passing teams.
It looked to me, the defensive schemes and play calls were kept vanilla.
Just as in practice, I think they are focusing early with being assignment and responsiblity discipline.
I honestly feel, they are back to basics, and will open up the defense as the season progresses.
With that said, I'm not overly concerned with the defense.
Giving up roughly 300 yards overall to an experienced qb and solidly coached team, is actually not bad.
Even if the defense only improves on better results on contested passes, that will go a long way for this team.
I feel the coaching and talent is there for this defense though.

Special teams, it looks like we again will experience teams avoiding our returner (Bergen).
No doubt, Grant Glasgow is a damn impressive kicker.
His kicks have a different sound to them.
His FG's and kickoffs were all american level from game 1.
IF he can maintain that, kicking is good hands.
Benham did a solid job punting as well. Again, nothing to be concerned about.
Who noticed Genatone on coverage teams? That kid is going to be a star!
He's athletic and damn heat seeking missile on special teams.
I saw enough to know, when he gets into the defensive LB rotation, he's going to be a X factor.
He only lacks experience. Please pay attention to him, every time he's on the field.
I am surprised, very little mention of HUGE improvement in kick return discipline.
Last season, the special teams return unit made a lot of stupid mistakes and decisions.
Butler tried to expose that, but as a whole, the GRIZ were prepared and made good decisions.
Safe to think, those things have been cleaned up.

Overall, I too expected a bigger point differential.
Considering the fact that we have new coordinators, inexperienced qb's, loss of 3 all american defenders, inexperienced CBs, new DE's being elevated, I feel I like the potential of this team.
Can they gradually improve in the 1st 5 games and clean somethings up?
Considering, most of these things can improve with experience and slight changes, I like the potential of this team.
I honestly feel, this team is further ahead than many fans feel.
I feel, too many fans have way too high of early expectations, considering all the factors in the equation.

My biggest concerns are CB depth, QB pressure, and how long will it take our QB's to improve on their games, and be fully in sync in the passing game.

Good job boys!

Watched the Cats play, looking spec, both sides of the ball. Way too early, but I'd suggest a good Griz/Cat game this yr!

The Griz O scored 3 touchdowns on one drive and overcame 2 holding penalties. Relax

Against who? Seriously?

Think back to the previous 2 seasons.
No matter the quality of the opponents, those things would have negatively impacted those teams.
To me, the team overcame a lot of things against Butler.

The GRIZ handled adversity much better. That adversity will make this team better!
