A friend of mine has told me "one of the D-1 Montana" school is recruiting this kid hard so I thought I might throw it out.
In the 2003 4A State Tournament, a young man named Adonal Arrington truly made himself known to the basketball world. The soft-spoken 6-foot-10, 310-pound center's dominance in the paint helped lead Clackamas High School to a third place finish - and also helped him earn a full ride from Weber State. Three years later, Arrington is back on the market, finishing off his sophomore season at Mt. Hood CC in Gresham.
In the spring of 2003, Arrington signed a letter-of-intent with Weber State, but wasn't able to qualify academically and sat out the 2003-04 season. Feeling homesick, the big man nicknamed "Junior" decided to come back home and enrolled at Mt. Hood. After a freshman season as a reserve, Arrington has started to hit his stride as a sophomore - mainly because he's gotten into better shape.
"Junior started off the year at about 335 pounds, but has gotten down to 290 to 295," said Mt. Hood assistant coach Geoff Gibor. "So he's lost 40 pounds and he's getting better every game. That's been his main focus (losing weight) because he's big enough to be a player inside. But now he's able to get up and down better - he's more mobile."
Arrington's numbers this year aren't particularly awe-inspiring, but they are solid - especially for the amount of time that he plays. He's averaging nine pionts and 5.4 rebounds on 57 percent shooting, and does it in only 14 minutes a contest in playing time. His size alone has been enough to attract college attention once again, and the more he gets into shape the more schools are calling.
"Portland State has been in to see him a few times, and San Diego seems to be pretty interested," Gibor said. "San Diego has said that they're still studying film. He's also gotten a lot of attention from D-II and NAIA schools."
Although he used a redshirt year while sitting out at Weber State, Arrington will still have two years of eligibility once leaving Mt. Hood CC.
