I think you guys will have a seriously good D line. But for anyone discounting our starting 4 D linemen... You will be seriously disappointed. They are solid, and they'll prove it. Regarding coaching being a toss up, seriously?
Coaching is most certainly not a toss up, at this point. It's still safe to say that Mick was dealt a poor hand last year, so this year will be a much better gauge. This is how I see it:
QB:
MSU, slightly. The only reason this is not a toss up is because JJ has missed a year and DM is very experienced.
RB:
UM. Jordan Canada rushed for 622 on 118 attempts for a 5.0 avg. Kirk rushed for 867 on 171 carries for a 4.9 avg. These two cancel each other out. However, I believe Counts and Van are a much stronger duo than Johnson and Robinson, mostly due to the fact that Van will be the best RB in this discussion by year's end. Also, UM's O line is much better.
TE: Toss up. Neither team really has a proven player at this position.
OL:
UM. MSU's biggest concern is their line and UM's line is their greatest strength.
Receivers: Toss up. Bleskin and Henderson are about equal at this point. The rest is a question for both teams.
DL:
UM. With Holmes, Kidder, Bienemann, Wags, and Tonga plus Ginn, Crittenden and Rehm as supporters, the Griz are deep here. MSU has had trouble with the run and as was already stated, DT is a big question mark. Daly will be a beast once again though.
LB:
UM. The heart of UM is in Tripp, Coyle and JP. Depth here is the scary part but with Na'a gone, it's really not close here.
S:
MSU. Safety was UM's biggest concern last year and with Bethely's 3 INTs last year returning they have much better experience. I expect Hermanson to be a version closer to 2011, but I still don't have much faith in Bo.
Corners: Toss up. UM's corners were young last year and besides the cushion they gave receivers did well, especially with their tackling. I think they will make huge strides in 2013. Look for Goodwin to be receiving post season honors and Dennard and Harris to make some big plays. MSU lost their best CB in Jones as well but didn't have the shameful pass defense that UM had the year before.
ST: Toss up. UM has the better punter, MSU the better kicker.
COACHING:
MSU. No real argument here.
