Portland St. Game Thread

I gotta tell ya, the Griz did not play with much heart tonight. They had a 10 point lead with less than two minutes left, and nearly lost. They can not make free throws, they are terrible against the full-court press. I am used to the disciplined Griz teams under Heathcote, Brandenburg, Morill, Montgomery, etc. This team is not even in the ballpark with those teams.

Griz made the plays when they had to. For those of you who have just started paying attention lately, that is a HUGE step forward from the teams they had only two+ years ago. I think it was only 2 or 3 years ago the Griz were embarrassed by 40 points by PSU in their own gym. One more win Griz and you get to sleep in your own beds for the tourney!

The Zen-master damned near jinxed us with his too-early congratulatory post. It ain't over till it's over!

So you are saying that the griz have not had any diciplined teams since.....what the 90-91 season?

I am not satisfied comparing this team to those of two years ago. I want the program to get back to where it was from 1974 until Holst ruined it.

It was 50 points, at home, and it had to be the lowest point in history for the program.

True. I must have been trying to make it seem a little less awful than it was. You know, sugar-coating and all. Heh.

Heh, Good thing Cherry made those FT's. What a shot by Nelson, doesn't matter though.
Nelson's last shot was just like all their slop shots that went in tonight. Good win Griz, any road win is a good one. Glad to see Cherry is a little more like himself, but Selvig needs to find himself, very quickly!!

Amid all of the cheering for this win, comes the realization that the Griz will have to play much better in Cheyney to win.

In addition, aside from the 1975 Heathcote led team, how many times did the Griz make the NCAA tourney with Monty,Brandenburg, and Morill???? I know S. Morill made it once. But since then, the Griz have made the NCAA tourney several times.

One very telling stat that stands out to me...the defense earlier in the year was allowing only about 59 points a game against some pretty sharp shooting teams and now they are in the 70s....something has gone amiss on this team...over playing, too much or too little desire, over or under coaching? Who knows...but, a 20 win season is damn good in any league...fortunately, most of those came early...

I thought I read that the Griz only had 1 turnover against the full court press... That isn't too shabby.

The Griz also shot 70.8% from the FT line. Again, not too shabby (PSU was 58.8%).

Any road win in the Big Sky this year is huge. The Griz D didn't play how they usually play, but they still won. They kept pace with one of the top scoring teams in the Big Sky (overall) this year offensively. The Griz have struggled on offense lately on the road, so seeing them go out and put up 85 against a team on the road is a huge plus in my opinion. The Defense wasn't great obviously on either end this game, but I know the Griz D is better than this...so I guess I'm not too worried about that.

Look at the home records this year for Big Sky teams. It's not easy to win on the road.. The Griz are the only Big Sky team with a .500 record on the road this year. Everyone else is well below that. This is a very big win for the Griz, and should give them more confidence that they can score on the road going into the EWU game.

Home Records according to ESPN (may not be updated for tonight's games)

Griz: 13-1
UNC: 10-0
WSU: 10-1
NAU: 11-1
MSU: 8-4
EWU: 7-5
PSU: 9-4
SAC: 6-5
ISU: 7-4

Tell it all you want. Can't make ft's? Ft's actually won this game for them. Qvale is the only one that was off, and he is usually pretty solid. How can you say they did not play with much heart? Were you there? Man, how about giving PSU a little bit of credit. I would say playing without heart they would have lost the game with a strong run from PSU. I don't mean to pick on you, but I hate that comment about no heart.

So how did we hold UNC to the 40's a couple weeks ago? I believe PSU averages 84 PPG. Looks like they were right on target
