Poor kaimin paper

I just think that when you are a dinky little free school newsletter, you don't do yourself any favors by going against the prince of the athletic department. Until you have some clout, go with the flow. Plus, do you think Griz fans (whether they are Bob supporters or not) want to read about some little tiff between the school paper and their football program. Simply embarassing.

I wonder how many dollars that the U of M will be losing this weekend because of this stunt by the Kaimin.

Not important. We need to focus on this wonderful paper and the wonderful, informative articles it contains.

What it seems everyone is missing is that this is the STUDENT newspaper, for students...you know the ones that pay his salary? Also, the ones that make the Griz gameday experience second to none? Whether or not you consider the Kaimin a legitimate news source, Bobby and the athletic program have a responsibility to those students. They are for all intents and purposes, his employer. U of M football is not a separate entity from the rest of the U. Lest we forget what The University of Montana is supposed to be about, and its not the ones on egriz bitching about the Kaimin. Its about the students.

if hauck can't deal with a school newspaper, just wait when he bails on missoula for a d-1 gig. how is he going to respond to actual media? i think hauck's shortcomings are more to blame than the kaimin. he should be the adult in situation

Totally agree. The football program is NOT bigger than the university, even though many posters think it is. Wait until we start having losing seasons, and the stadium is 2/3 full, and watch these fair-weather fans who seem to get vicarious orgasms being part of the phenomena of Grizzly football. They will disappear then, leaving those of us who understand that the university will be there long after the recent success of the football team.

Bobby, meet your boss - he writes for the Kaimin - WTF :?:

There are two distinct but inter-related issues here:

1. BH's "inadaquate" response to hostile media obviously needs to improve if he is to advance in his career.

2. The Kaimin reporters attempt to investigate an incident involving irresponsible behavior by football players and react irresponsibly when they fail to get the story they wanted. The players didn't get a pass for their behavior (though it could reasonably be debated whether the punishment fit the crime) and the Kaimin reporters shouldn't get a pass either. At least everyone directly involved in the "football player incident" is OK with the outcome. What is the Kaimin going to do to make their part right?

Hmm.. I was under the impression my tax dollars were paying for things like the Kaimin and Bobby's salary. It's not all funded by the U students.

I have always been proud of many parts of the University of Montana. Whether it be the Law School or the Business School doing well in national contests, listening to the marching band, Listening to the symphony, watching Monte, watching women's or men's basketball, watching football games all make me proud of the University of Montana.

This is not about a football program this is about a paper that in my opinion has always been mediocre at best

That is your opinion. The same opinion might be shared by some about our football coach

No question and I absolutely agree. I, for one, am not of the opinion that any program at the university is above the university (other than King George's program). I do not believe anyone on here feels differently. The issue is timing, factual information, best interests of university, etc.

I haven't read all the posts here, so forgive me if I'm repeating an earlier sentiment.

I think it pretty disrespectful to print an article covering your school's opponent on homecoming! I'm not going to take sides, but it seems to be like the beef is with Hauck, and if they do a piece on Cal Poly they will be hurting much more than Hauck's feelings or whatever they are attempting to do with this forthcoming article. This is how you treat your alumni when they are in town, do a piece on your opponent because you got into a pissing match with the head coach? This does more damage than they intend, I believe.

The students aren't going to the Kaimin for in-depth discussion on the UM football team. Heck, most students could care less about the Kaimin. What this boils down to is a few journalism students and their professors who think that they should hold as much power as the Head Coach of a FCS powerhouse. They just can't stand the fact that they have no clout, no pull, and no real voice in the fans' lives.

A Kitty fan who thinks logically... :D Whatever is written in the Kaimin will not hurt Hauck's feelings whatsoever. If you have not been able to figure out it by now, Bobby's concern is in regards to his players, his team, and yes even how the football team represents the university. The media/Kaimin rank very low on his priority list.

I would wager that the six biggest circulation days on their calendar are the six Grizzly Game Day editions. The consumers of the Game Day editions are OVERWHELMINGLY Griz fans, 80% or more of whom are NOT UM students. Ad buys for that day are businesses who want to support Griz football, and advertise products/services to the Griz fan base. Their target demographic is LITERALLY wearing maroon glasses. It seems now that the Kaiman is willing to compromise its biggest circulation days of the year over a pissing contest that has to do with a six-month old, long resolved fight that didn't even merit a police report.

If I bought advertising for Saturday, I'd be pissed. I'd want a refund on my ad buy. That paper is funded by taxpayers, ASUM, and by its advertising. Guess who makes up the difference when ad revenue falls?

Personally I have always found Hauck to have a great personality, but that is besides the point. As far as Hauck with the media I think it will always be a rough, but he has been burned before by the press, especially the Seattle Times. The publisher of the Times is an ASU grad and hates the Huskies, and really hated Neuheisal and crew. Last year they ran a series on the 2000 Rose bowl team that ripped the team apart for the actions of a few players. Here is what Hauck had to say about the series:

I was a little offended that they decided to pick on the two dead kids (Williams and Anthony Vontoure). It was an attitude of “Let’s pick on the guy whose marriage was bad like many are, and let’s pick on the guy with such severe emotional problems that he couldn’t function.” The only thing that kept Anthony Vontoure from being homeless was football. But they decided to denigrate his memory too.

I thought it was typical of a lot of the mainstream media in the country, where it’s sensationalized in order to sell newspapers and draw attention. I didn’t read all the articles. After I read the article on Curtis I stopped participating in that whole thing. I thought the whole thing was way out of line.

I had known Curtis since he was a junior at high school. I didn’t recruit him while at Colorado (with Rick Neuheisel). When we got to Washington, I lobbied to get Curtis from running back to safety, because I thought he could be a great safety, which he was. Curtis was a young guy who had different things going on with his life that weren’t always positive. But he was an engaging guy, popular with his teammates, and a natural leader. Had he been able to continue with his life away from a wheelchair, or even in a wheelchair, I think he would have been an extremely productive post-graduate adult. That’s my take of him. I’ve got a picture of him in my office here (at the University of Montana), and another one of him at my home. To me, he was pretty inspirational. He was able to climb out of the negative, and turn a lot of things into great positives. I really wish that his life could have extended because I think he would have been a real productive person.

It’s still emotional for me to think about, because it was so devastating. When I sit and think about it, it still hurts me. When I saw Curtis go down (vs. Stanford 10/28/2000), I knew he was hurt bad because he didn’t move. The guys out there trying to tend to him knew it was bad. I remember that I had tears streaming down my face the whole fourth quarter.

Bobby Hauck (former UW assistant & current Head Coach at Montana)

http://derekjohnsonbooks.wordpress.com/2008/07/21/the-2000-washington-huskies-respond-to-the-seattle-times/

Players for the team also were asked about the series, and there is a link to the series as well. The point of posting this is that Hauck has dealt with media a$$holes before and has little patience for them based past experience.

Yeah, what a bad newspaper, bad reporter

How dare thee report on another Hauck coached team that had murderers and rapists running rampant on the team. I read the entire 4 or 5 part article (very long reads, especially for many on here) it was sickening what happened to that team, the suicide and the guy that got severely hurt.

Still the newspaper did what it should notify the public about a football team that was WAY over the line. (again)

It is so telling abut the people that would defend the coach over things reported by the newspaper, sad, sad sad what this world is coming to. Nobody wants to accept any responsibility and own what they helped build.

I'm not sure what the Kaimin's weekly distribution is because I was the sports editor last year, so I just dealt with sports. But for Game Day issues, we printed about 4000 for our Saturday distribution.

Yes I'm sure the Seattle Times motivation was to protect the people of Seattle by reporting on things that happened 7 years prior and had already been mostly reported on. I'm sure the motivation to print the series was altruistic, and not because the Huskies were on the verge of firing the worst coach they had ever had and might replace him with a coach that would turn them into a winner - oh wait, the editor of the Times says that was part of the motivation to run the report:

With each Husky loss, calls for the ouster of Athletic Director Todd Turner and Coach Tyrone Willingham — both hired by President Mark Emmert to restore integrity to a program that had been left in ashes by Neuheisel and Hedges — grew louder. In December, Turner was fired, and he posed the question: Is winning the only thing that matters?

In the aftermath of that firing, we acquired public records of e-mails from football fans to Emmert demanding a winning team and the firing of Turner and Willingham, including one in which a former mayor of Everett offered $200,000 in donations to the UW law school in exchange for getting rid of the two men.

The UW football program was clearly at a crossroads, one in which values were coming into conflict. We wrestled intensely with airing unsavory details from seven years ago. But we ultimately concluded that a better understanding of the past would help inform the future.

Beyond all that, though, I do get a laugh out of the Alpha calling for Hauck to be fired because a couple of his players got into a fight - the same Alpha who bragged on e-griz about going downtown looking for a fight with AZGriz a couple years ago. Maybe Alpha's boss should be fired.

Loolz.

And yet here you and your peers are six pages deep into throwing a tantrum about the Kaimin.

The Booby Hack supporters are the biggest bunch a freakin cry babies this side of a maternity ward

And this is for a paper that has a circulation of 4000!

I can't wait til Hauck crashes and burns in a market with 500,000+ circulation.

It will make this little episode look pretty, pretty, pretty silly.
