Poor kaimin paper

OK...I guess not.

I love the just griz as much, probably more, than anybody here, and that's why I read this forum. I know that griz people are going to be excessively optimistic about the team's chances on the field, just like I am. But again, that's not the point. Being a fan does not mean that you have to suspend all reason when discussing a controversy that involves your team.

When you take your heads out of your asses, you'll see that griz footballers are a group of college-aged men who very rarely do dumb things. But these things are significant in the context of a scarred program.

What, do you guys want to support some kind of SEC team
that has no standards, and is for all purposes an NFL development squad? That's fine if you do, but you aint a Montana fan.

SEC - huh??? What the heck does that have to do with this? Have you got some investigative work that was done on them and there schools?

Scarred Program - dude your theatrics are beautiful

Peaux: Yeah, I am not with the team and I certainly don't have any sort of inside knowledge. I guess the things that I know about that bug me about how things have been handled are the Quinn DUIs and this latest fight, and his incredibly impolitic answers to the Kaimin. It does seem that punishment in some cases has been swift and harsh - like with Washington. And other times not so much.

I do think that Bobby has been a bit unlucky with the off the field stuff, but after enough times I guess you can't still complain about luck. So I guess the point that I should have been trying to make was that I don't mind if the players know that if they do anything wrong, the Kaimin might find out and write about them, even if the coaching staff would be happy to bury the incident internally. If it convinces the players to toe the line a little bit more I don't think that would be a bad thing. The program needs about two years without any incidents in my opinion.

Swink and Johnson get suspended for a game and who know what else for spring ball leading up to the season....what else would have been justified? I would like all you people hateing on Hauck to tell me what should have been done in this instance. They got in a fight, a fight where the kid and his parents are satified with the outcome, and posters here and the Kaimin think that BH did nothing? Step up and type what exactly you would have done that would have been more appropriate...

Whatever works. Suspending players for the Western game is not exactly a super-harsh penalty in my opinion. But if it works and makes an example to the team that they'd better stay out of trouble, then I guess Hauck's work is done. I guess we'll see if the team goes a while without any incidents. If so, then I'll concede that losing that playing time against Western really did a lot.

All I am hoping for is about two years without any athletes embarrassing the program. I'm not asking for anything other than the bare minimums that society asks of its citizens. I don't think I am being radical or hating on Hauck either. The off the field problems are the only problems that I have ever had with his tenure at UM. I'm just hoping the off the field problems stop, and Hauck can enjoy a few years at UM concentrating on football.

The stomping of a guy at a party by two football players is NOT the problem in this case. It's the bullying of a reporter who was asking completely reasonable questions, and the arrogance of not even explaining or apologizing (except for a mealy-mouthed, third-hand excuse).

The profanity could've been handled differently and as already mentioned was apologized for. But, why does Hauck owe the Kaimin anything? The last I recall his contract included incentives to do the coach's shows, but nothing about wasting his time for the Kaimin. He's a busy enough man as it is. If I was in his shoes, I probably would've done the same thing and ignored their questions too. Hauck lives in the same America you and I do and is just as entitled to his rights of privacy as the next person. Sorry, but being a collegiate head coach does not suspend those rights, no matter what you think.

The Kaimin should realize Hauck was actually taking time out of his schedule and from his family to meet the press. He doesn't have to. He could close practices and not allow media access, if he wanted. The Kaimin needs to show a little respect for their main "customer" and learn some customer relation skills if they actually want something in return. Funny thing is, is that you can tell by the desperate tone at the end and the fruitless threats by the writer that they realize this could be the beginning of the downfall of the paper and they are getting nervous.

The Kaimen asked the question at the coaches weekly press conference. It's part of his weekly job duties. He wasn't taking any time from his family or friends. There was no privacy involved.

The coach is wrong in this case. The original story was news. It was newsworthy because of the celebrity status of the folks involved. It was reported accurately by the Kaimen, they actually did a good job with it (name one fact incorrectly reported). If the coach doesn't want to answer a reporters question, he should decline in a professional fashion. My issue is the f-bombs and generally nasty behavior of the head coach.

It seems to me that Hauck is probably doing the reporter and editor a huge favor. The Kaimin staff are students who are learning their trade, and it seems to me the reporter and the editor are finding out what the real world is like without jeopardizing their career.

Havgriz or Seven would know more about this than me, but it seems to me that if a young sports reporter picked a battle like this with a coach he was assigned to cover and was shutout from all interviews with that coach the reporter would soon find himself out of a job. And a decent editor would have arranged a sit down with Hauck, the reporter, and O'Day, and worked this issue out so the story could about the suspensions could still be written but the relationship with the football team preserved.

My problem with the Kaimin has never been that they reported on the beatings. My problem is that the story and angle the Kaimin chooses to pursue is that they are all-important and if you don't bow down to them they will destroy you, and Hauck refuses to capitulate to them. Hopefully in the end these students will learn that working for a newspaper doesn't make you all-powerful. Otherwise they should consider a different career choice, because I don't think they will last too long in a paying job.

I think it is very sad that so many of you are slamming your college newspaper, just because they are doing their jobs, and might expose something that you do not want exposed. Many of you are graduates of UM too, and seem to only care about winning football games at any cost, and could care less about anything else relating to your alma mater. Shows just how shallow many of you are.

The UM journalism department is one of the strongest ones on campus, and is nationally recognized. It is something to be proud of for your university. The Kaiman is also nationally recognized among student newspapers. Yet, if it effects your hallowed football team, you are quick to throw it under the bus. Some of you are pathetic. It is a football game, not the key to life itself. Get a perspective!

I have read the posts in this entire thread, and one thing is very obvious. Bobby Hauck could have avoided this whole Kaimen issue if he would have manned-up and answered the questions like a leader should have, instead of acting like his usual arrogant self trying to be a big shot. Seems like every coach who never played the game like Hauck and Gruden feels like he has to act like a dick in order to gain credibility. I hear from credible sources that every other Big Sky coach thinks Hauck is an arrogant jerk. Hauck's coaching prowess might be open for discusion, but is personality is borish at best.

Well said.

I was listening to Hauck on a sports show yesterday on 105.1 and he was so arrogant and condescending you wanted to reach through the radio and smash his stupid face.

He made me want to listen to Oprah...........thats how bad it was.

Where the kaimin went wrong was in trying to out arrogant an arrogant coach! They got their little feelers hurt. Then this week they cut off their faces to spite their noses and will be feeling the effects for months. Now how will the fans respond to the sophamoric and immature reactions of the Kaimin ? The whole Cal Polly expose will backfire, the fans will be pointing at the Kaimin, for not doing their job , not doing some indepth Griz personel investigation, yet taking the inept and easy way out by trying to blame it all on Coach Hauck!

Personally I have always found Hauck to have a great personality, but that is besides the point. As far as Hauck with the media I think it will always be a rough, but he has been burned before by the press, especially the Seattle Times. The publisher of the Times is an ASU grad and hates the Huskies, and really hated Neuheisal and crew. Last year they ran a series on the 2000 Rose bowl team that ripped the team apart for the actions of a few players. Here is what Hauck had to say about the series:

I was a little offended that they decided to pick on the two dead kids (Williams and Anthony Vontoure). It was an attitude of “Let’s pick on the guy whose marriage was bad like many are, and let’s pick on the guy with such severe emotional problems that he couldn’t function.” The only thing that kept Anthony Vontoure from being homeless was football. But they decided to denigrate his memory too.

I thought it was typical of a lot of the mainstream media in the country, where it’s sensationalized in order to sell newspapers and draw attention. I didn’t read all the articles. After I read the article on Curtis I stopped participating in that whole thing. I thought the whole thing was way out of line.

I had known Curtis since he was a junior at high school. I didn’t recruit him while at Colorado (with Rick Neuheisel). When we got to Washington, I lobbied to get Curtis from running back to safety, because I thought he could be a great safety, which he was. Curtis was a young guy who had different things going on with his life that weren’t always positive. But he was an engaging guy, popular with his teammates, and a natural leader. Had he been able to continue with his life away from a wheelchair, or even in a wheelchair, I think he would have been an extremely productive post-graduate adult. That’s my take of him. I’ve got a picture of him in my office here (at the University of Montana), and another one of him at my home. To me, he was pretty inspirational. He was able to climb out of the negative, and turn a lot of things into great positives. I really wish that his life could have extended because I think he would have been a real productive person.

It’s still emotional for me to think about, because it was so devastating. When I sit and think about it, it still hurts me. When I saw Curtis go down (vs. Stanford 10/28/2000), I knew he was hurt bad because he didn’t move. The guys out there trying to tend to him knew it was bad. I remember that I had tears streaming down my face the whole fourth quarter.

Bobby Hauck (former UW assistant & current Head Coach at Montana)

Players for the team also were asked about the series, and there is a link to the series as well. The point of posting this is that Hauck has dealt with media a$$holes before and has little patience for them based past experience.

As much as I hate to say it, I feel like Hauck was out of line on this one. No matter how illegitimate the Kaimin may be, it is still the student news paper, and Hauck should be accountable to the people that pay his salary, and keep that institution (UM) and by proxy the Griz relevant. Lets face it, UM has great student support when it comes to football, and for Hauck to dismiss them like that was unprofessional, and showed a total lack of appreciation for the support they give. Pretty immature if you ask me.

Anybody know ...

... how many papers the Kaimin prints for in-week distribution?

... how many Game Day Kaimins are printed?

Amem brother! Some fans seem to think that the university runs around the football team, instead of the other way around.

I am an out-of-town alumnus who thinks this makes the Kaimin look ridiculous. But, it's not like the Kaimin had any bearing on my life anyway. Publishing a cover story on the Homecoming opponent will just make them look that much more ridiculous. I can't really blame Bob for shunning them.

Or simply decline to answer in a polite and professional manner. Bobby doesn't have to answer every question, but he would do himself and his team a favor by acting in a professional manner.

it's immature to write a story about the opposing team. funny? maybe, but mostly immature.

i think the kaiman should just stay with its full-court press on hauck. if he doesn't allow his players to answer questions, then the kaiman should inform its readers of this every week. they should continue to ask him questions and print his and his player's responses.non-responses. no need to get cute, because so far hauck has done more to make himself look bad than an article on cal poly by the kaiman would.

the kaiman could write a story about the game by taking quotes from other sources (radio show, press conference, etc.) and using them in their stories while crediting the source. quotes don't have to come from questions that the kaiman asks. but i would continue to inform readers that hauck isn't talking to the kaiman via columns and also just present it as general information.

I never have been a fan of the Kaimin going back to when I was a student in the 80's - worthless paper but was good at starting fires in the fireplace during the winter (maybe because BS burns so well) . Go back to the stories and editorials on what the Kaimin's opinions were in regards to the building of Washington Grizzly Stadium. Open up the archives and take a look.
