Poll Guesses (Oct 20)

Only four ranked teams lost, and none of those were low in the list. So I do not expect to see any team dropped from the top-25. (Of course, SDSU losing to a pitiful 1-6 Missouri State team could prove me wrong on that point. :D ) The SHSU loss will hurt them, but probably not enough to drop them out of the top-10: They were on the road and, of course, McNeese was also in the top-10. In fact, it would not surprise me if SHSU comes in at one or even two spots higher than my guess.

Unfortunately, those changes don’t leave any room to move the Griz up (and they probably don’t deserve to anyway). The good news is that #11 and #12 both lost. Thus, UM’s close call against Cal Poly should keep them from moving down despite their win (which has happened, if you recall).

UNI’s loss to an unranked opponent may hurt them even more than I’m showing. I would not be surprised if they dropped another spot or two. The UNH upset of 'Nova could make for some interesting changes in the lower part of the poll. Villanova will certainly drop ... I’m guessing a fairly “typical” six spots. And normally the lower-ranked but winning team would move up 3-4 ... but even with the win, UNH is only a .500 team (3-3), with no other quality wins. They could go up, but that would move them past 7-1 Tennessee State and a pretty solid 4-2 Ga Southern team.

Hmmm, I've been reading some wrap-ups/analyses for the games this weekend. The possibility that South Dakota State will get hammered in this next poll may be higher than I thought ... and I thought it was pretty high anyway.

Why? First, they have lost four of their last five games, and during those losses they were outscored 141 to 65. Their only win was against Western Illinois, which is 3-5 overall, but has lost five of its last six games and averaged about 15 points per game during that run. Even more than I thought before, it would not surprise me if SDSU dropped out of the top-25.

Maine is WAY too low. And no team (read: UNI) that has lost 3 in a row belongs in any top 25 poll...and no team (read: SDSU) that has lost 4 of 5 belongs in any top 25 poll. Also, being 7-0 (Coastal) or 6-1 (Eastern Ill) in a historically weak (read: VERY weak) conference doesn't justify rankings in the top 7.

Spot on, but hunch sdsu and UNI both fall further not out.....eastern Illinois is the sleeper choice in my mind to win nc

If poll voting made sense, I'd agree with you about UNI and SDSU ... and, as I said above, I'm beginning to think there's a chance we'll be rid of SDSU. The worst part about the Coastal thing is that their most dangerous opponent is probably behind them. It's entirely possible they could go all the way undefeated, and end up with a seed. :o

I can see them losing at least two of their last five (to FBS #20 S. Carolina and 7-1 Charleston Southern, who hung with Colorado for three quarters).

Oh boy ... my bad, bad.

That's what happens when you don't check claims made in what purports to be a sports-reporter type blog. (I have excerpts, but lost the URL, so I can't provide the link.) I assume the writer, who covers the Big South, meant that Coastal would go undefeated in conference -- he made a point that Coastal is an offensive juggernaut (#2 in the FCS, at 44.7 ppg). Charleston So has padded their impressive-looking record with two D-II schools you've never heard of and some truly pitiful opponents (including VMI and Campbell, both 1-6).
