Safety Greg Nygren's school record 94-yard interception return for TD
Sept. 24, 1988
MISSOULA, Mont. -- Safety Greg Nygren's school record 94-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:34 left in the game Saturday lifted Montana to a 26-17 Big Sky Conference victory over Idaho. Nygren's interception of a John Friesz sideline pass came after the 2-1 Vandals, trailing 19-17, had driven to the Montana 10-yard line and appeared headed for the winning score. The score typified the contest in which Idaho's huge statistical advantage was offset by an opportunistic Grizzly defense that recovered three Vandal fumbles and intercepted four passes, returning two for touchdowns. Nygren broke a school record set in 1977 when Kelly Johnson returned an interception 90 yards against Portland State.
The Grizzlies powered to a 13-0 lead in the first period on a 52-yard interception return by Quintin Richardson and a 47-yard TD run by John Huestis. Idaho rallied on a 19-yard scoring pass from Friesz to David Jackson and a 37-yard field goal by Thayne Doyle, but Kirk Duce booted a 39-yard field goal to give the Grizzlies a 16-10 lead at halftime. Idaho rallied again taking a 17-16 lead in the fourth quarter on Bruce Harris' 1-yard TD plunge with 11:16 left. After an interception, the Grizzlies regained the lead on a 22-yard Duce field goal to set up Nygren's heroics. Friesz, who passed for 420 yards and one TD, and Harris, who rushed for 162 yards and a TD, led the Vandals.
